You aimed better with Carlson's. If you centered the shot through Accuchoke, as you did with Carlson's, the patterns would show similar concentration of pellets, with Carlson's showing a slight edge, for it is a tighter choke.
Human error was certainly a factor. The other point I made was that my turkey gun had not been shot since the previous turkey season. There is a great possibility that my site was off zero to begin with. I travel and hunt public land so my guns always go through a lot of wear. Thank you for watching!
Just an observation and info for those who may not know, but the hits that are not in the brain/spine are non lethal hits. The longer the shot the lesser chance of hitting the brain/spine. I don’t count them in my patterning of shells and chokes, I only count brain/spine hits. Good luck everyone this season! Stay safe!
I had the same experience with my 835 tactical turkey. First time out I shot a turkey at 33 yds that I rolled him. Then it got up and flew off. Not a fluke. I patterned the gun before the season and did my homework. I replaced the Mossberg with an Indian Creek Black Diamond and the difference was unbelievable. This is my second 835. I've been shooting Mossbergs for 30 years. I love my new tactical turkey but the choke was not up to par. Also, the safety was extremely hard. I had to replace the safety switch with an after market one that was higher profile.
I video buddy! I have tested several chokes in my 835 and found that the factory chokes are hard to beat! Looking forward to your next comparison! Keep up the good work!
I read in one of the outdoor magazines that a acceptable pattern at longer ranges was 7 pellets in the kill zone.( neck and head) I would say both these chokes performed very well. I agree with you no need to buy a new choke, factory is good. Nice video!!!!😊😊😊
That last one at 20 yards = a jelly head! That turkey would’ve been headless. One plus about the Carlson Long beard tube is it’s Rated for Steel, Tungsten, hevi, and Lead. The Factory Mossberg Turkey tube is only Lead rated, at least the one that came with my 930 turkey model is.
Good comparison vid. Im not suprized, my Remington 870 super full factory choke is killer out to 60 yards. I always see the fancy choke tubes and just keep walking at cabelas!!
I have a cheap after-market tube on my 11-87 because the stock one that came on the field barrel is not good enough. I was expecting more from the Carlson's because it's a tighter constriction. At least it was on $55! lol
I just picked up a new 835. I have an Indian Creek tube I used on a previous 835 I had. I’m going to be comparing the factory ported AccuChoke and the IC soon…curious to see how the stock tube compares.
Jeff, just found your videos and subscribed. I pretty much agree with your results. I compared my 870 turkey super full choke to the longboard. Longboard tighter out to 40 yards. However 35 yards is the longest shot I’ve ever taken. I hunt heavy woods where most of my turkeys are taken between 15 to 25 yds. I decided not to use Longbeard choke because at 10 yds the pattern was the size of a tennis ball. Too easy to miss a turkey sneaking in at 15 yards with his head bobbing around. I went with the 870 super full last year and got my gobbler at 17 yds. I like a little wider patter when they are that close and moving. Good luck in 2021 and keep the videos coming.
Glad to have you Matt! Thank you for your support. I hunt a variety of locations as you have seen! Good luck to you this coming season. Keep me posted on your success. I love hearing from people
Good luck to you, I ended up getting one with my Remington shells with the xr choke tube . Fyi I shot AA 7.5 skeet load at 40 yards and had over 40 pellets in the kill zone.
Really good video Jeff. My self I think XR TURKEY CHOKE by Carlton's in conjunction with the Winchester XR # 5 shot turkey loads, did better in my Benelli. I did the same similar test with my cop N choke and there were no comparisons but my cop and choke did great with my Winchester's Supreme X #5 shot. .. I sure hope your shoulder feels better today😄👍
Awesome video. Thanks for your review. I just bought a 935 wanting to see if it compares to my 870. So far I spent 90 on a Indian creek choke but had better luck with the one it came with. I was able to take 1 bird at 70 yards federal tss. A few at 60 yards with the long beard xrs 5 shot 3.5 in.
I have a 930 with the stock choke. The stock choke on the 930 is non-ported and I really want a ported choke. I've been looking at the XR choke and might get it. Not sure.
i think you should try it with a bigger target i shoot the same set up and get a way better pattern than that with the carlson i think the densest pattern was off the target
To fully determine accuracy, you have to shoot from a stabilized rest with something like a Lead Sled that braces the gun. If not, then the data is solely dependent on your freestanding aim and is basically worthless. Appreciate the effort but buy or borrow a stabilized rest.
I actually bought a sled shortly after this video went live years ago. I appreciate the feedback. I wouldn't consider this shooting as "free hand." I've killed a lot of turkeys over the last decade while hunting more than a dozen states, all solo and public land including my single season grand slam in 2018.

Mossberg makes good choke tubes, the practically invented the specialized turkey shotgun AND popularized interchangeable tubes (patented by Winchester). The Truglo Gobble Stopper will also out perform the Carlson at 60-70 yards. I took 3 over 60 in the last 2 seasons. First one was at 63 yards, the second I took at 62, and this year I took one at 64 yards.
