- The US Treasury Department imposed restrictions on the Moscow Exchange and other Russian financial institutions. As a result, shares in the Moscow Exchange collapsed. Some Russian citizens cannot access their accounts. As the Bild writes, these problems undermine Russians' trust in banks. A banking panic is possible in Russia, experts say, when clients start withdrawing money from their accounts en masse. Russia is poor; the West is rich. I suspect Putin will drag his nation pretty far down, as Ukraine is now authorized to use advanced Western weapons to destroy oil refineries and military infrastructure inside Russia. I suspect it will be a *VERY COLD* winter there. Bankruptcy is just around the corner for the Russian government.
It’s the US that loose out in the end. Russia were always going to dump the dollar, and start their own reserve currency. In a couple of years we will see the US dive into the abyss.

On a more serious note: I do not understand the point about calculating the value of the ruble in yuan vs. dollars. I would expect that (rubles/yuan) * (yuan/dollar) would yield the same result as simply (rubles/dollar) on international currency exchanges.

Ruble to Yuan, two of the weakest currency in the world now co - dependent. The question is can the Yuan survive this shotgun marriage to the Ruble. China already locked down it's banks preventing withdrawals and moving money out of country. Gov'ts all over China owe vast amounts to banks and can't pay due to real estate collapse (they funded gov'ts by selling off land, you see, gov't owns all land, whenever they need to they just say get out, and sell your land, well they often offer some monies, but rest assured nothing like what they will morgage it for. With mega loans not sending those monthly checks to banks, the banks lack any funds, they just hold worthless mortgages, so the banks can't give anyone any of their money. China's Yuan does not float it's dictated by CCP, and they can say it's whatever they want but when it comes time to buy oil gas and coal overseas, cos will want many more times the Yuan over the official rate, or dollars or euros.
