As the introduction implies, all of them were about to take part in a charity concert, so came as a package advertising the event. Ralph and Bert were old pals from way back (lived together in the 70s, and Bert's manager was Ralph's brother). You're right, neither Bert nor John add much of significance to what Ralph is playing. John noodles some minimal lead lines, and I'm not sure you can hear Bert at all (mosty just doubling what Ralph is playing). Still, you do get three guitar geniuses for the price of one...
