    Here in the Netherlands
    I also had a dead 12v battery problem after driving just 1 week , the vw garage came to pick up my id3 max , delivered me me a brand new vw polo automatic to drive with for free.
    After 4 days it had been checked and had become a software update. In the meanwhile they also build in my towbar (trekhaak)En now after driven 200 km it has no problems. i hope it will be oké .
    When i bought the id3 they did not tell me that there were bugs in the software , they told me in januari 2021 we will get an update for rhe missing funktions such as augmented reality and apple carplay

      @Car Fli , i think it is not the battery itself , maybee it is consuming 12v while it’s standing still because he is in always on mode and communicating with the connect app , and doorkey.
      My 12v battery was empty after standing still for 2 days , at home. With a full 58 kw battery

      It is not the 12V battery! It is a software problems that takes power from the battery and drains it. Just a software fix but they have to locate it first.

    I have the eGolf over 3 years now with nearly 50k km and I never had one single problem. Aside from possible potential problems in the future, I believe the eGolf is very much undervalued: it drives just as well as the ID3, just as quiet,... and with zero faults in the software. Of course its range is limited to about 250 km in summer and 200 in cold weather. FYI I charge it at home overnight with the left-over BMW i3 charger which went up in flames after 3 years (arson, along with our house, but thats another story). The BMW was excellent EXCEPT for the most important quality of any car: its drive-ability: it was horrible: it would sail all over the road. But heads off for the eGolf. The ID3 can wait until all sofware problems are solved; end of 2021 maybe??

    Sorry to hear about your issues Chris. To tell you the truth what i dislike most about EV's in general is the reliance on software and screens to control stuff i prefer to be analogue. As a software engineer i just know how prone to bugs and errors complex software can be.
    I think i might transition to an EV via converting an older analogue petrol car to run as an EV, it just is more of a KISS process and something i feel more comfortable and familiar with. I know of a good place in Holland that does that kind of conversion, but they have a pretty big waiting list.
    Good luck in getting your computer systems fixed!

    I had a MINI Cooper JCW that had a faulty radio module that continually drained the battery. Finally the BMW/MINI dealer replaced the module and fixed it. I never had battery drain issues on my VW models, but I did get those front assist and ESC warnings randomly. I also had some issue with the steering angle sensor that made the steering pull left and right at certain speeds. That took ages to figure out. Finally I had to take my VCDS unit and purposely reset things that would make warning lights appear before the VW dealer did anything about it.

    I forgot where I read this, but someone claimed that the battery drain could happen if you press the start button or the brake pedal less that 10-12 seconds after turning off the ignition. Apparently something hasn't shut down properly and then stays on.

    • @Gresteh
      @Gresteh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's one way that seems to drain the battery, but it may not be the only one. Right now i'm trying to confirm that specific instance of 12v battery drain. I "may" have managed to reproduce it once, but i need more data. 20 minutes ago i started a second attempt, i wont have any results until tomorrow morning at the earliest, and that's if i manage to reproduce it as it may not happen all the time. The problem is that this kind of test is very time consuming as it takes hours to get meaningful results, 3-6h to "stabilize" the battery (anything that happens before that may be due to chemical reactions in the lead acid battery) and then i have to wait several hours to see if the 12v battery SOC and voltage drop or not.
      A single attempt will take a whole afternoon just to try to see if it worked or not. The results i've obtained so far are interesting but far from enough to drain the battery in a single day. In order to be certain i need at least 24h worth of data (not using the car in 24h, not getting close to the car with the keys as the car "wakes up" when you get close to it with your keys and not using the we connect ID app to connect to the car as it may wake up the car and that may prevent the problem form happening).... In top of that the battery monitor i'm using uses several parameters to calculate the SOC, including past data, voltage, temperature and other factors, so i cant take the numbers at face value at least not yet, it will give me an idea of the battery SOC but not a certainty.... and it doesn't allow to export the data, so i can't get a full picture, just an approximation.

    • @Gresteh
      @Gresteh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @timemachine_194 Yeah, you may be right about the clamp meter, but it’s not a viable option for me as I park my car in the underground parking of my apartment building, shared with at least 60 to 70 apartments. In order to do that I should leave my hood open as soon as I park my car, rush to my apartment, leave the keys at home (so the keyless system doesn’t draw any energy) and then start measuring the cables (more than one as the battery is connected to a box that distributes the energy to several places, it’s not just a single cable). And even that may fail as the car may keep some ECUS alive for a while on purpose, so that would force me to go back to the car some time later without closing the hood (as I risk interrupting the problem if I open the door with the emergency key to reach the hood lever)… I could do that, but leaving the hood open (or just unlocked) in a shared parking is too risky.
      In top of that the bug seems to be random, yesterday I failed to trigger the problem, after almost 12h the car had lost no voltage or SOC, the car was sitting at 91% SOC and 12.7v. I tried to reproduce it once again about 12h ago, and so far the SOC has dropped from 93% to 91% ( I drove for about 10 minutes to ensure the system had time to load everything and that increased the battery SOC), the voltage has dropped from 12.7 (the car was at that voltage just before I began to drive) to 12.6… but that’s not really useful… if my car is using energy the voltage will drop, if the SOC is dropping the voltage will also drop, so I can’t really distinguish between consumption and state of charge, other than monitoring the car for a long time. The last time I managed to reproduce it the SOC (according to the sensor) dropped by almost 20% in 14h and the voltage dropped by at least 0.2-0.3v.
      Right now, the only option I have is to wait for a while and try to see if the voltage keeps dropping, if that’s the case it will mean that the car is draining the battery.

    These issues are quite common when there is an issue in the 12v system in any car. My Volvo also did stuff like this and my friends Dodge Charger did the same. In both cases, we had to replace the battery, then do a hard reset and everything returned to normal. I’m sure there are also software bugs making this even more complicated in your car. In your car there is probably some other issue with the 12v system or otherwise that is causing the 12v battery to drain but the errors were probably brought on by the dead battery. Interested to see what VW says. I have a VW too, and the dealer is useless. Last time they said I need a new radio for 2500 Euro because there was an error message. I have VCDS, so I scanned the car myself and the error was years old. All I had to do was reset the radio and remove all synced phones in the Bluetooth module and it worked. The issue was that they didn’t reset the system after doing a software update. 🙄 Thoroughly disappointed in the service teams lack of knowledge.

      @Gresteh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope, Chris' car wasn't an old car, from what i know it was built around june or perhaps July, so its battery wasn't damaged from sitting for months before delivery, besides, 12v batteries are designed to last for years without any maineinance, a few months shouldn't be a big deal. My car was built a few months earlier than Chris' and it doesn't have any problems with the 12v battery (at least not that i'm aware of, i'm trying to reproduce one way to drain the battery and so far i've been able to observe an apparent drop in 12v battery SOC after trying one specific way to do it, but i need to gather more data). There is no doubt that the car has problems, most of them software related and VW is working on fixing them.
      BTW: my car was built in early March, that much i know, it spent a few months outside waiting for delivery, but so far i haven't had any significant software issues, a couple of warnings here and there but most of them cleared away within seconds, the back camera went dark once but it hasn't happened again. I have a few gripes with the software, mostly about usability and sluggish responsiveness under certain circumstances (mostly during startup)... but the car has been working great so far, the car has some problems that need to be fixed (a few quality issues that will be fixed easily) and i have an appointment to fix them in a few days. I don't know how long i'll be without my car, but at least i have a backup car that i will use... unfortunately it's not an EV.

    Manufacturers of EVs seem to think that customers won't be satisfied with just an electrically-powered vehicle, but that in addition they want all sorts of IT innovations, in order to present a futuristic image. New combustion-powered cars are also being produced with inconvenient touchscreens and computer toys, all of which are subject to software bugs and cannot be mended by the local garage. It would be sensible to adopt a conservative approach to electrical innovation, starting with the power train and getting that right, but not risking complete system failures due to software or minor hardware glitches.

    Hello. Great video, thank you. Are you saying that VW does not provide a courtesy vehicle while they investigate their faulty product which is still under warranty? Is that even legal? It might seem like a small detail but this alone would have me not to trust such company and never touch their product with a barge pole. I have tested the ID.3 for a week with an EV awareness initiative here in the UK and my impressions are rather mixed. I think for this kind of money and dubious software quality it's too much of risk, especially when there is ever so increasing choice of other EVs. Like the BMW i3, for example. Thanks for your video report, all the best and good luck with your VW misadventures. Looks like you will need it. :-/

    Very frustrating luckily my id 3 doesn’t have the battery problem but the secondary system software bugs are numerous , I’ve switched off voice id and acc control in the uk has a habit of switching between miles and km so will read a uk sign in miles then convert it thinking it’s km in the acc so you do 20 in a 30 etc. Frustrating but overall it is a great car to drive if you ignore all the extra features. Hopefully the new software will fix most things. I must admit that you can get get a travel sickness feelings at times have others experienced this issue.
