Welcome back! I’ve seen so many teachers post a “Why I Quit Teaching” video in the last couple of years that it’s totally refreshing to see a talented, passionate person come back.

Thanks for this positive video. I’m a new substitute teacher in my late 40s considering getting my teaching license eventually because I’m loving my experiences with the kids so far. But when I started coming on TH-cam the other day for classroom management tips, I was bombarded with “Why I Quit Teaching” videos and couldn’t believe how much negativity is out there. I realize teaching is very challenging, and who knows, maybe I won’t last long in it myself, but all the negativity is most definitely scaring away a lot of would-be teachers. How is that helping anyone? Who will be left to teach the kids? I think these teachers sometimes think that quitting “en masse” will force necessary change in education, but the truth is that the students will just suffer.
I’ve heard burned-out teachers say they would much rather have a desk job or work from home. But the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I’ve had plenty of desk jobs, and I’ve been working from home for the past few years, and guess what…I’m depressed. It’s lonely, and I don’t usually feel like I’m doing anything meaningful. Most of the time, I feel like I’m just lining someone’s pockets somewhere. Desk jobs don’t have summer breaks or extended holidays like school jobs do.
So thank you for this video and for all you do for students, teachers, and aspiring teachers!

There are some very lucky students who are going to reap the rewards of this decision! I know I'd love having you teach my own kids! I can totally relate though. It's bad enough with a classroom trying to turn a mind off from work, but when there is no set schedule I really struggle to separate work from downtime. You have an amazing channel here which has helped so many teachers, myself definitely included!

All the way, Sam 🎉. I'm an avid follower of your 21st century teacher course. I have implemented blended learning in my institution this year for tertiary students and it's a big hit. And for next year's workplan, I'm toying with the idea of training our instructors to teach competently with AI tools to keep abreast with our tech savvy students. Looking forward to more such content from you. 😊

The old saying that "Teaching is a calling" may seem over-stated, but that doesn't make it any less true. There is little substitute for being in a class, helping individual students, and putting into practice the ideas you discover. Here on TH-cam, there can be a larger audience, but sometimes a smaller audience in a classroom can make all the difference in gaining perspective. Your students will be fortunate to have a teacher with your talent and passion.

I applaud your decision. I think it's important in the future that we have administrators do the exact same thing you are doing. I think administrators should have at least one year off every 5 years and teach for a year. This would help administrators stay grounded and understand the dynamic of the classroom that they are managing. I was an administrator for 10 years and I lost touch. Even though I loved working with teachers, I knew I was not in their shoes. I have since returned to the classroom and I've been teaching for the last 4 years. And now I understand. I could be a much better administrator now if I were to go back.

This here. I have found it hard to follow online education content when teachers leave the profession because, eventually it feels like another District PD. Folks far removed from the classroom throwing out all kinds of ideas and theories that they haven't actually implemented in the classroom. I find it to be more authentic and useful when educators actually use what they promote. Welcome back! your channel got me through COVID and I continue to use everything I've learned from here. Keep up the good work. Best regards!

Me too, I miss that the joy and excitement in the classroom among the students. I was about to cry when I heard you. I have a new job as Academic coordinator which I deal with teachers, no more teaching in classrooms. I think I'm not gonna stick with it for a long time, it's been only two months away from my students and classes and I'm already feeling nostalgic💔

Thank you for making this video and sharing your process for making the transition from the classroom to business and back. You explain well how important it is to have concurrent teaching experience while teaching other teachers how to use technology. Technological solutions to teaching challenges are very seductive, but having a foot (or two) in the classroom makes it much easier to keep it real. Your videos are always worth the wait and I look forward to viewing them whenever they arrive.

Maybe it's not the structure you miss, maybe it's the purpose you have. I watched your video about Why technology in education is important, and I couldnt agree more with you. And that post was 4 years ago and strangely enough, extremely relevant today. Dont ever lose sight of your purpose and never let anyone lead you astray. Always invest in self-care. This career is mentally taxing. Great video!

Hello it just subscribed thank you so much for your videos not sure how much time you have to respond. I have a bit of the lemma my background is audio video productions now I'm teaching six grade technology so I'm a first year teacher and I'm trying to integrate technology for the students who have chrome books maybe 1/4 of them have cell phones. Any ideas for capitalizing on concepts like audio production video production podcasting introduction to photography they've been through Google Docs and Google slides fairly well. Thank you for any help. A.k.a. struggling a bit with attention span and curriculum that's not too boring. As you know they're very hands-on if I knew what the capabilities of Chromebook are they like the concept of newscasting podcasting the school has no equipment really for this

I think you’re right to go back to the coal face. I agree with you that it will enhance your contributions to your teacher training role.
I went back to teaching (out of retirement!) about eight weeks ago. And boy! it was a shock to the system! I really had to polish up my act super quick!
I wish you the very, very best. Teaching is a noble calling, remember that! A noble profession.

I left and still haven't desired to go back. Until everyone refuses to "teach" changes won't occur. The curriculum needs to drastically change. Coding from 2 years old until 18 everyday. Computer IT daily for 1 hour everyday from 1st grade until 18. Math should be basics in elementary. Advanced math not Algebra in middle school. Financial from K through 18. 3 hours day digital (with basic math and reading). Science 2 hours a day, 1 hour needs full labs.
