    Hey! Rao's PROUD new owner here! I wanted to leave a REVIEW for Rao here for anybody eyeballing this like I did and going "omg... is this worth it?" ... YEAH. IT IS. I found Charlie via their Tatsuko puppet making tutorial like many others, and, being an up and coming puppeteer in the states, I had to contact them. I was insanely nervous, but they were very down to Earth and willing to talk through their process. I want to reiterate- I did NOT KNOW CHARLIE before contacting them for Rao. I write this review strictly because Rao is /that/ wonderful. This artist deserves so much recognition...
    Anyway. Don't balk at the initial price tag. Things like this are thousands of dollars- even knowing so, I did not know this creator. I was taking a huge risk, and I was incredibly nervous about taking the plunge. It is so scary, seeing that amount of money be sent to another person you don't /really/ know. I am here to tell you it is safe, and it is worth it. Let's go into some details about this puppet.
    I won't sugar coat it- Rao is amazing. Look at her. Do you see this video? She's real and alive and brings people from across a room without me even putting an ounce of effort into my puppeteering. I've had puppets before her, so I know what to look for as far as quality goes. The craftsmanship and finishing details are all there as you would expect from a high-class and long-standing company. There is no residual glue. There are no spots left unfinished. Thanks to the creator, she is sturdy enough to withstand tons of petting and attention. I have yet to have need to touch up her face paint after dozens of shows. Her legs and other body parts are meticulously sewn down and STRONG. This is the only puppet I have that I feel confident in sending for travel with other people, as I am truly confident that SHE WILL HOLD UP where my other puppets cannot. This includes a FACTORY MADE puppet. I can sling her over my shoulders and hoist her here and there and not worry about everything falling off. Meanwhile, my other puppets have their own wagons, carrying cases, and checklists....
    I could go on and on about how sturdy this puppet is. I could NOT be happier with the quality of her build. But, alongside that- she is ALSO my easiest puppet to control. The arm holes are fully lined on the inside, and can even be pulled outside her body for cleaning. The head is detachable for easy maintenance, and super lightweight so I can stand hours of puppeting her for my events. The blink mechanism allows for the eyes to blink separately, and are easy and fun to manipulate. Charlie uses HIGH QUALITY FAUX FUR (Thank goodness) and not cheap stuff that tangles easily. I brush her and bathe her after every event, but the fact that she is not made of cheap materials is a Godsend. Did I mention she is also, just, STUNNING enough to stand on her own as a plush? She attracts guests even when I have her "Resting" thanks to her bright colors and impressive size.
    Let's talk about shipping. Customs is terrifying and overseas shipping is EXPENSIVE. It's still worth it, my friends. Charlie cares about their creations so, so much. and it shows in how they meticulously packs and tracks their creatures. Charlie was in contact with me the SECOND Rao left their residence. I was their first overseas customer, so we were both incredibly nervous. Rao took about a week to arrive, and I was worried because, outwardly, the box had taken some damage. Thankfully, Rao was packaged phenomenally. The horns and heads were so precisely wrapped, that even with the box crushed in, they sustained no damage. The body, big as it was, was not overstuffed into a tiny box. She came with supplies to repair her, instructions, and many other goodies. No lie, I cried when i opened that box.
    In conclusion- these creations are essentially magic. They are big, scary and expensive to commit to and not everyone can do that. But- if this is something you want? You have /finally/ found the right person. It is worth the wait for commission. It is worth the anxiety over the high price tag. It is worth the worry over customs and shipping. The process from day 1 was so chill and easy and I cannot stress how much Charlie puts their whole heart into their creations. If you are lucky enough to get a commission slot, be ready for the most fun and magical period of your life. Once you have one of these creations, you are /done/ being the normal person at the party. There's no more "Wonder if people will like my costume?" No. You are now the party. Trust me. It is so satisfying to walk down a convention hall and watch hundreds of people do double takes to witness the majestic beast on my back. This is real and this is magic.
    Tl:dr - WORTH IT. 😎

    • @KeepDrawingCharlie
      @KeepDrawingCharlie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oof, well this one has 3 tails so more than my usual!
      For the long pile mane and backs of legs, and if you're doing a spine you'll need 50 long × 100cm wide
      For the body, depending on how long it is you need it that long off the reel, really. I usually use 200 long×100cm wide, and that should easily be enough for the face and arms.
      Hope this helps! My dragons are pretty big and I always have left over fabric, better to have too much than not enough

    • @KeepDrawingCharlie
      @KeepDrawingCharlie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So it's easily 100+ hours of work per puppet from beginning to end. But I have a part time job with fluctuating hours so there are weeks I barely work on them, and some I can work almost full time. Each puppet easily takes me 2-3 months to make. You could certainly make them faster if that's all you did!

      I basically made a long triangle for the body 😅
      And the channel for the arm is literally a length of fabric that I sewed the edges together, to make a tube, then hand sewed it to the neck and arm hole.
      Tbh a lot of it is trial and error! You don't improve unless you make mistakes, so don't be afraid to!

    How do you attach the legs? Do you sew them on or use glue

    • @KeepDrawingCharlie
      @KeepDrawingCharlie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, sew them on! You need a curved needle and strong thread, then use a blanket stitch/ hidden stitch/ whatever it's called.

    What is the gray material you used to cut your pattern out? It seems so sturdy.

    Hi! I absolutely love your work and i was wondering if you'd ever want/be willing to sell a pattern for the body :D

    • @KeepDrawingCharlie
      @KeepDrawingCharlie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Afraid not for the body, its actually just a really simple V shape so it's not really worth printing something like that off 😅 just get yourself some scrap fabric and play around with it!
