My fellow sewing learner,61 here, made my first shorts out of an old sheet. 🎉🎉🎉You are so sweet for sharing. I had a human answering my 1500 questions before actually cutting fabric!🎉🎉🎉 Keep trying!
You did a fantastic job! Most first projects are things like simple aprons! I’m 78 and started sewing when I was 3. Doll clothes came early and most of that was just playing around with it. The summer after 3rd grade, mid 1950s, so full skirts, I made my first dress and changed it quite a bit. I did have help from my mother, though! She put in the zipper and hemmed it. Speaking of zippers, if you can find a Simplicity Sewing Book, you will have a great reference book! When you get to the stage of needing to sew in a zipper, I still refer to the instructions on the paper that they come in. Save it for reference so you can use other brands afterwards if you want. Good luck. You can do it! I have a feeling that you are quite capable of doing more and enjoying the process!
@@StitchingaPath My kids all decided they knew how to sew so would not listen to me - until they got married and were trying things! LOL! One really likes to sew and has done very well - meticulous! She did eventually want to move on from quilts and started making zippered bags. They are actually a good place to start since they are small. She found info on YT, of course, and finally called me. We watched the same video together and I would tell her more specific info than the video had. The more you do something, the less you remember to mention it! She is making a dress with a lapped zipper now - back zipper with the zipper completely covered. It is the one that is the hardest, I think. An extra generous seam allowance in the zipper area makes it a lot easier. You machine baste the part of the seam where the zipper goes, so it helps to mark the seam line, the cut it wider. Practicing on something small is a very good idea. Practicing frogging one isn't a bad idea, either. You seam ripperS are your friends! They are just sewing erasers. I have several different types!
Is it bad that I like watching you struggle? It’s reassuring that I’m not the only one, lol. But, to let you know, turning the tie is NOT the easiest part. Turning something that narrow makes me talk like a sailor. All I’ve ever used is a knitting needle. One day I’ll get one of those fancy new turny thingys. Btw, making the waistband wide is what made it so ruffled, but using the already finished edge from the sheet was genius!
Ah, the light that you have shed on my sewing mysteries is so illuminating haha! That waistband thing had me puzzled. I still wear them anyways because they are super comfy! Thanks for watching!
I’ve got an elderly machine that I bought at auction several decades ago. It was a high school sewing class reject as well. It sews very well - although has been tended to by someone who reconditions these machines. He’s said “never get rid of the old machines, they’re gold”. But sewing clothes freaks me out. I’ve nearly finished a blouse (new buttonholes) but am hand sewing the neck and the sleeves. Too timid to try using my machine for that. Love the pants dance too. I very much love your channel.
@@StitchingaPath Or possibly just mad! But I’ve been quietly pleased by the bias neckband - even though it turns out it wasn’t long enough for the neck. But I’ve fixed that. Little but of extra fabric. Sigh. I really do enjoy your videos. You have a natural talent. Regardless, I’m grateful, and entertained. ❤

@@gloriamartinez1676Thanks for watching! I will keep on trying. At least TH-cam has a lot of videos that can help me out!
Sewing is hard! Thanks for making this intimidating process funny and realistic. You should do a left handed series!
Thanks for the idea!
Thank you for sharing what real sewing looks like! I too have trouble turning fabric right side out. So I do know what rage sewing looks like!
Good to know I'm not the only one!

I have the Readers Digest sewing book, but I will be sure to check out the Simplicity book. Zippers are on my list of things to conquer!

try loosening the stitch tension for the waistband, or, use multiple lines of stitches through the elastic
I think the idea of using multiple lines of stitches through the elastic might do the trick. I'll give it a try! Thanks!

Wish I were there to help! I loved sewing, but it's been so long since I did. My fingers just don't work so well now!🥰
I wish you were here, too! I know you are a fountain of sewing knowledge. I remember those dolls you made us!!

Aww thanks so much! You are brave for making a blouse!
