I often think about what Jack Kirby or Stan Lee would think if you could time travel back to the 70s with something like Infinity War. Or bringing The Dark Knight to Bob Kane and Bill Finger in the 50s… Would they understand what they’re seeing? Would it look like a cartoon to them? Would it blow their minds? I wonder…

"Dense With Mythology" omg that is exactly what I want from Marvel. Action is wonderful, Marvel's low-key weapon is to spin world-building. We haven't seen such (another quote) "dense" material since blip moments in Guardians and little other moments here and there. From Loki ep 6 and the Ancient One's lessons to random comments about the MCU past in the films. Nothing like what I am expecting and hoping for with Eternals. I want action, I also want lots of things to unpack.

I disagree with johns take on, everyone has powers. The entire X-men franchise delved into that and it’s gonna drive him nuts when mutants are introduced. I feel like he’s basing marvel on Spider-Man alone, like he used as a description. Sure, Spider-Man is the neighborhood hero and they gawk and take photos in amazement. But, as a whole, the comics only used Spider-Man that way. Everyone else was known and world ending events happened daily. So it seems he’s basing it off movies and not the source.

Theres a lot of value on the mcu, but it is undeniable that the world inside the movies, have people already used to be in the middle of things like super powered aliens burning half NY, and super powered cience guys suddenly flying over you, and more and more weird stuff pop up every other week. Not necessarily will take away the human part, but of course things are less shoking, less amazing, within the same universe. Its like people being used to watch cars and planes. Is nothing special, as it once was.

    • @etherspin
      @etherspin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think he is probably right to base it off the movies and not the source. The movies evoke real life questions where comics very often have understanding that their plotline is like a bubble
I'm very concerned that X-Men / mutants being a phenomenon in the general populace in the MCU as opposed to ridiculously rare (like one in several million) will wreck the relevance of the existing MCU characters. People will assume Black Panther is a mutant , Spidey, Thor , AntMan, Hawkeye (they'll think his vision is enhanced) and so on and if we are to believe the existence of mutants tears apart the fabric of society that will be what's at the forefront of the MCU, story arcs will come second unless they leave this as a conceit for a short time and then have mutants stop a calamity that would have ended Earth
You have far more scope for longevity if there is a justice league or avengers where the members are from around the globe because it's just so uncommon to be this exceptional

    • @Skeptical_Owl

^this. The humans in the MCU mirror the humans in our reality. We've seen so many superhero movies, we've seen so many monster movies, we've seen so much CGI, that we're essentially jaded to all but the most novel or spectacular thing. Look at the chorus of people saying how sick they are of "comic book movies." John is yearning for a young, innocence that no longer exists. I'm SO happy to hear how this film is being received. _So many_ hateful channels out there made it a point to crap on the casting, calling it "woke" and predicting and hoping for it's failure. They did the SAME THING for both _Black Panther_ as well as _Shang Chi,_ actively predicting their failure... and then ending up having to grudgingly back pedal once BOTH those films did better than expected.
I don't understand why these people make SUCH a big deal when other races are cast. It doesn't affect the quality of the story and it's not hurting anything, but these channels and the people who support them seem to bizarrely take this as a "personal" attack. Great reaction - very interesting! :) Can't wait to see this! I must say, I understand the concerns and certainly would like an X-Files like show, though to a point I think AoS was that. Maybe an Agents of Sword show with Monica Rambeau, Darcy Lewis and Jimmy Woo. :)
BUT in all honesty, as somone who never really read comics and who wondered what can they do after Thanos, I couldn't be more happy about the direction they are going. The movies and TV Shows are creating so many characters I care about - really taking the time to introduce new heroes and villains and fleshing them out that it offers such a wonderful and rich playground to play in. In the first phase they were so dependent on the characters and actors and they did the heavy lifting, but now the MCU can exist even when major characters exit like Cap, Iron Man and Black Panther. And wity what happened in Loki, which blew my mind, the door is always open for different versions of heroes or villains to reappear in a way that makes sense. It's incredible to me that they still manage to not drop the ball with this ever expanding universe, but for me they really haven't yet. And the important thing is that the new additions are human and emotionally connected. We have the more galactic stories, we have fantastical and magical realms, we have the quantum realm, we have multiverses, we will get Maya inspired 'Atlanteans', we have Wakanda and Madripoor. Very distinct and diverse settings. The movies are getting more inclusive and culturally sensitiv and carry a lot of RL importance with representation. I really can't wait for what they have planned. I am 31 and I am in awe with what they are doing. I marvel at what they have achieved - I don't think anything will be able to replicate this interconnected universe as much as they try - it's a unicorn.

I really hope the "Is the MCU overpopulated with characters?" question isn't the new "Comic Book Fatigue?" question. We have so many more characters to introduce. If you're personally fatigued or overwhelmed then you personally should step away and maybe skip a few. We all shouldn't be denied potentially great movies because someone wants to arbitrarily put a limit on how many characters we can have in the MCU, If you personally are overwhelmed you can make the personal choice to do literally anything else. While you do whatever it is you choose we should be able to enjoy a highly populated MCU.

The question posed by John about the MCU and his concerns with it becoming overcrowded.. and the subsequent response by Rob was some of the best discussion and analysis of the MCU I’ve heard in a while.. as a mega MCU fan I admit I often think how if I lived in this world I’m sure I would become so desensitized from all of the craziness at this point that it wouldn’t feel as awe inspiring and epic as it should.. Rob is 100% correct the MCU needs something to ground it back down to a human level and give some heart felt perspective of what the average person is going through.. in a similar note I’ve seen people discussing something about the MCU Spider-Man movies and what they were missing (I personally think they are great and I love them but this would be a really good idea) and that is the people of New York backing and showing love for their hero. The other movies had these moments where everyday NY citizens ended up saving/showing appreciation for the hero in a very emotional and inspiring way. Not having stuff like this in the MCU kinda makes the world feel detached in a way… one of my fav scenes from Infinity war actually was when Tony went out on the street and was helping and checking on people before going to fight maw and obsidian

Rob, I agree and I actually said the same thing after the snap. Marvel should do a animated movie with shots of superhero events from maybe a cop or civilian perspective. There was rumors of a Marvel show during the days of Agents of Shield. Basically the premise was a company that got paid to clean up after events like New York. I think that company technically turned into Adrian Tombs company at the beginning of Spider-Man Homecoming

The only thing I will add is that, even though there might be less awe about superheroes, they still have that “celebrity” factor where people around the world would or could idolize and in the same.token some would hate. So that sense of awe is still there for those that love them. Think walking into a restaurant and seeing one of your favorite actors or singers. There are thousands of named actors and celebrities out there and hundreds that people idolize. Why could this not be the same?

"I am wondering how the average mcu moviegoer will feel about this movie bc its different"
John, one of the biggest criticisms the mcu gets is that their movies feel the same, follows the same mcu formula, etc. there is a reason why movies like Logan, Infinity War, The Dark Knight trilogy, Joker, TSS and CA:The Winter Soldier are much more beloved by movie fans than the other mcu movies, because they’re different, everybody would love to see something different more often from the mcu instead of the same safe cookie cutter formula. In regards to John's fear of overpopulation dulling the wonder in the mundane, I think that we can look to how people reacted to the increasing population of superheroes in comics. The comics will always be more overpopulated than our films, because our films are based on comic properties. If people in general don't get tired of overpopulation in comics, they will adapt to the increasing roster in film.
What MCU looks like it is doing is following the precedent set by comics. When a planet is too small to contain the characters, bring in the galaxy. When the galaxy is too small, bring in the universe. When the universe is too small, bring in the multiverse.
And if the comics are able to maintain a sense of wonder while having a FAR larger shared universe, the films theoretically can too.
It also opens interesting story opportunities. In a world where gods walk openly, the mundane IS extraordinary. Maybe that is the real hidden lesson of comic and movie universes: we spend so much time looking for the wonder in the mundane that we may forget that the mundane itself is a thing of wonder.
