  • The BYU Cougars enjoyed a strong showing at Big 12 Media Days inside Allegiant Stadium, Home of the Las Vegas Raiders, and Jake Hatch says the comments made by BYU football coach Kalani Sitake, Brigham Young University (BYU) athletic director Tom Holmoe, and the players in attendance seemed to indicate that BYU feels like they are right where they want to be right now.
    Jake then talked about some of the notable changes that were revealed with the release of the new football roster with the removal of Cade Fennegan, Peter Falaniko, Ty Burke and Bentley Redden headlining the departures along with Jake sharing what he knows about running back LJ Martin's status ahead of the coming season in the Big 12 Conference.
    Finally, the show wrapped up with notes on former BYU soccer star Bella Folino being awarded the prestigous Bob Bowlsby Award by the Big 12 Conference and the newly-formed Big 12 Alumni Council featuring former BYU football, San Francisco 49ers and NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young and BYU soccer and NWSL star Ashley Hatch as the BYU representatives on the council.

    The challenge for BYU is their player depth at all positions. They have depth at wide receiver, safety, and tight ends. After that the 2nd and 3rd stringers in the other positions are not great. If LJ Martin can't make a go of it, they don't have depth at that position. LJ has injury problems. Last year he was hampered all year by injuries. This is what will be their downfall in the B12. Utah has incredible depth at nearly all positions as do many of the other B12 teams. This is all a result of the lack of being able to consistently recruit quality candidates and the lack of outstanding coaches and coordinators at BYU. Kalani, as much as I like him in terms of how he represents the team and the university, did not adequately prepare by getting outstanding assistants and coordinators that could recruit at a high level. He has made recent replacements with Jay Hill, and the Offensive line and running back coaches but it will take time for them to gel. For now, I would realistically expect the team to have another losing record this year. The seat will get hot to make major changes - most likely A-Rod but that is only a guess. If things don't improve, in the next two years, Kalani will feel a lot of heat.

    Jake your wrong every game we have is important to getting bowl eligible! Loosing LJ for any amount of time is critical for there win loss record!!! If he misses anytime it's a big blow for BYU's success this season!

  • @kendalldean9612
    @kendalldean9612 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    One last comment, I disagree that it is more important that LJ and Bywater are ready in time for B12 games. The first three games of the year are the best opportunity for BYU to win this year. Not having key pieces at the beginning of the season could put BYU in a tough situation. B12 games are going to be tough and if totally healthy BYU's chances of winning those games is going to lower than the games at the beginning of the year. For BYU to have any hope of making a bowl game this year they need to win the preseason games. Otherwise, kiss that one goodbye as well.

    Really? Your goal is 6-6 for the season. This means success is set at three Big 12 wins for the entire season giving a Big 12 two-year record somewhere around 5 and 14.

    • @brettallen1440
      @brettallen1440 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, 6-6 keeps the program on a positive trajectory. If your baseline for success is 8-4 you've got your head in the clouds. You have to expect growing pains moving into a higher level of competition.

    Jake.... Good show. I know you probably don't care much for my posts. Prolly won't care much for me repeating myself today. I watched Kalani's presser. I really like Kalani. He's a good man who's intentions are good. He's just not coming acrossed as 'the guy' in this new era of BYU football. Everyone compares him to Lavell. And in ways he's a good man like Lavell. But He falls well short of Lavell when it comes to Football Coaching. I REALLY GROW TIRED of the 6-6 BS coming out of all the INSIDER BLUE GOGGLE PRO RETZLAFF supposed experts. Trying to 'build a case' that Kalani should be 'safe and sound' if he goes 6-6 and gets to a Bowl is absolute Malarky. You've seen my posts before and there are comments below that say the same thing. Winning 3 Games in a 9 game conference schedule isn't 'competitive'... The absolute DISCOUNTING of Gerry Bohanon by these same BLUE GOGGLE's is just evidence to me that ARod isn't even one dimensional in his talents and capabilities. For the last two season ARod completely misjudged his Oline's capabilities. Again.... SLOVIS wasn't the problem. ARod was the Problem. And don't try to pitch that BS that Slovis was injured for the Oklahoma and Oklahoma St games and couldn't play. Kalani SAID on his show that SLOVIS was ready to go before the Oklahoma Game. And on top of that, ARod allowed ELITE players to either LANGUISH with NO Scheming in their direction or them TRANSFERING because of his lack of vision and scheming. As I have also said before. The ONLY way I'll feel good about 6-6 is if BYU hands a big ass 'L' to Utah... If Kalani loses to Utah? Then it becomes hyper obvious that Whit isn't compromised by his Friendship with Kalani but Kalani is definitely compromised by his friendship with Whit. I really grow tired of the 'we don't have the talent' to compete rhetoric that's out there. What we don't have at BYU is coaching that can compete... And i'll excluse Jay Hill and a couple other coaches from that equation thus far. This season will really tell alot about Hill's Coaching. I give him a C- in recruiting. How BYU didn't bring in a slew of Defensive Linemen is crazy to me. How did that Kaufusi Kid get scooped up by Utah when they are 3 deep already on the DL? All that said? Its' going to be a good season.... You could see that Whit was trying to play the 'good guy' instead of the 'feather ruffler' guy in hopes that Utah isn't in every single B12 teams cross hairs come game time. Utah already drew the easiest schedule in the B12 which somehow is pathetic...
