    Deserving winner and a really high standard this year but that double kiss by Murphy also stood out in my mind. Looked simple but I can't even imagine the levels of accuracy and judgement involved. Great tournament!

      It was pure luck

    • @synchc
      @synchc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@petermernagh9991 None of these players could play any of these shots so well with even 10% probability so yes, there's a good amount of chance but it obviously isn't luck. He saw the shot and played it.
      But yeah, massively improbable. That's what makes a shot memorable.

    • @thekaratekidpartii2169
      @thekaratekidpartii2169 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends how you conceptualize luck. I think the main skill in snooker, in terms of accuracy, can only really be assessed in terms of long pot statistics. But, when it comes to cue ball control, the margin of error is often bigger than it seems. For example, how many times do you see a great screw into the pack of reds only for the commentator to say "he's unlucky not to be on anything". But "unlucky" and "lucky" are just two sides of the same coin-and, if someone is unlucky not to be on anything then they would more than likely be just as lucky if they were on something. You find this kind of language throughout the game. A player often gets an "unlucky" kiss on this or that... but when they don't get the kiss and end up tight behind a color for a snooker it's apparently a "pure skill". The fact is, skill is directly related to consistency. And you often hear the commentators saying "he could play that shot a million times and not get that result", and this seems to be true when you see players trying to recreate their great shots and failing-even ones that look relatively easy. Which implies they didn't really know what they were doing-hence, they were lucky.

    • @synchc
      @synchc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thekaratekidpartii2169 You're basically agreeing with me.
      It's an extremely difficult game and the more variables you add in (going into a pack of reds) the more seemingly random the outcome. Does that mean that a pro going into a pack can expect the same outcome an amateur does? Does that mean that we see consistency between RoS and other pros when going into the reds? Of course not. Does that mean that Selby, RoS, Trump or the new crop of Chinese players are "lucky" to end up tight behind a non-OB once in every three to five snooker attempts? No. They played it and they got it. Just the fact that they saw it and played it means they are good snooker players. The fact that they got it, with increasing consistency based on talent and skill, means they are the best snooker players.
      My point is it's not "luck" when a top sixteen snooker player sees a shot and pulls it off to perfection, it's chance. But it's a chance that they made possible. NASA doesn't point a rocket into the sky and hope for the best; they calculate, allow for windows of error, evaluate and then either take the chance, re-evaluate or cancel.
      Point me to the "relatively easy" shot that the commentators have noted as to be "one in a million."

    • @sdrtcacgnrjrc
      @sdrtcacgnrjrc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@synchc cant agree more. Clear and to the point, thanks.
      @The Karate Kid: Re the term "one in a million" -- the term is usually used by commentators for extreme flukes, be they with good or bad luck.

I'm torn between the Trump/Williams world semi and the Williams/Robertson masters semi; as a Williams fan, both were very heartbreaking, however, great to watch. That break Jamie Jones made (on the first shot they showed) was great until the white went in. Had he have cleared up, you'd have to say that it would be one of the great Crucible clearances - right up there with Alex Higgins' clearance in 1982 against Jimmy White. Okay, his break failed ultimately, but I do admire Jamie's fighting spirit. He is one of my favourite player.

      On paper, Judd has a far better record over Ronnie than Mark does. Especially in finals.
      Half the reason why Judd didn't perform to his usual standards in the final, was the gruelling semi-final he played with Mark. Every chance Mark might have similarly suffered on the Sunday - or maybe not...
      Still, I get your point. Would have been great to see Mark get thru to the final. But, we did get to see that 'moment' between Ronnie and Judd at the end of the final... A significant moment in snooker...

    • @markregler2164
      @markregler2164 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the colours, no. On the reds you could if you wanted too. The thing is, that in snooker the score is the deciding factor not clearing the balls from the table as in pool. If you pot two reds simultaneously you earn two points, but loose the chance of gaining an extra 7 because you can still only pot one colour after.

    The commentators need some new catch phrases. Something besides "What a shot". They are always talking about pressure. " Now that was just pressure, 9 time out of ten he would have made that shot" They have no way to know what the players are feeling. Some may never feel pressure while other play better if they feel pressured. My all time favorite is of course "Where's the cue ball going, where's the cue ball going" Said with a slight rise in tone and in a more hurried manner. I think it's the pressure that causes the commentators to get so excited.
