I am by no means a fix-it guy. The self propel stopped working and the mower is under warranty at only a year old. Called and was told it may be 2-6 weeks to repair. I watched your vid thinking the cable had snapped. Took out the 4 screws that hold the covers and found the belt had jumped off track. Put the belt on, replaced the screws and fired that bad boy up. Self propel works again. 15-20 minutes in all. Thanks for the vid!
I really like how you don't waste time by talking to the camera for unnecessarily long stretches. You work while you talk, which is the way instructional videos should be. This video helped me a great deal. Thanks.
Turns out there was a twig jammed between the belt and wheel, causing my self drive to fail. Your video wasn't exactly a solution to my problem, but you helped show me how to remove the plastic shield, so thank you!
So my local guy wanted $50+ parts to change cable. Watched the video and decided to jump in. Although I have never changed a cable before I just followed the directions in the vid. took me 10 minutes to get the cable in but almost an hour to figure out how to adjust it properly. But all's well that ends well, I got the job done and proceeded to mow my lawn without involving my lawnmower repair guy.

Thanks for the video! My mower's self propel stopped working after my last use, turns out that the belt had just fallen off the pulley. Was a quick and easy fix!

Yes its sometimes a process of elimination.. if the belt is good, remove the cover and belt to the transmission and turn the pulley by hand in the direction of the engine and see what happens. with the engine off of course.. if the cable engages something on the transmission, then u might have to lock it down with a piece of string or something

Lol.. Yes I have another channel "the home improvement channel" so it could have been me.. I've also been fixing lawnmowers for many years.. Thank you.. 😊😊
I have a Toro Recycler that kept throwing the drive belt, I put it back on several times myself. I ended up taking it to a authorized toro shop, explained the issue. They changed the belt, blade and rear plastic guard for $125. Got it home first time I used it, the belt came off again and the rear guard came off and was chewed up by the blade. I handle the yard, love yard work and to fix things, so I handled this while my husband works full time. The Toro shop people were the rudest bunch of AH I've ever encountered. My question, can I remove the drive assembly and make it a easy to push mower, currently it's a killer to push or what is wrong with this thing so I can fix it. It starts and runs good. Thanks, Mary
Vince DeBenedetto Jr I think maybe if you remove each wheel... there's a little gear in there that drives the teeth on the inside of the wheels.... you should be able to remove both gears and turn it into a regular push mower.... hope this helps
Will it cut the grass for you!?? 😂. Kidding aside, there are a few things it could be. There could be a lot of grass caked up around the pulley under the cover that won't allow the linkage to release... The cable could be rusted and won't move back and forth smoothly. Did you replace the belt recently? IF so it could be to short. I'd pull the cover off and see if anything stands out.
I’ll have to try this out. Some guy fixed our mower because it wouldn’t start but then when I used it a couple times after it stopped moving it’s wheels. So I’ve been having to push it and it’s a pain to do it in Florida weather. So I’ll have to try this out and see if it works.
Yeah it’s a pain... especially going up the hill of grass where our storm drain is at... I tried the wheels first and it’s not those. But I’ll have to check more of it later on. It’s to hot outside right now lol.
I also noticed when i started it the drive belt wasn’t moving. So I thought maybe I needed a new one but I looked at the front circle wheel and I tried to turn it a bit when the mower was off and a little grass clump came out and so I restarted the mower and the belt started to move again and now my wheels turn. So I guess I’m ok now. My wheels works again. But the belt it self does look a bit old so I may some day replace it.
Wish I could figure out what's wrong with mine. Engage the self propel and all that happens is the belt occasionally squeals and the front wheels give a little resistance. Gonna try a new belt first, in case this one has already gotten stretched. If that doesn't work then I guess I'm looking at getting another new mower, which sucks because this one isn't even a few months old.
Possibly the transmission itself has gone bad, or something in the wheels... Take a look at the pulley before you order a new belt and see if it's spinning..Sorry for the late response, your comment was lost in the mix..
I very much enjoyed your two videos on the traction drive cable and belt replacement. I replaced both. My issue is when the cable is adjusted to engage the drive it makes a horrible noise and the wheels only turn a little. How do you replace the drive box on the front wheel drive models? Thank you so much for your very cool videos.
You're welcome! Are you sure the belt is in correctly? If so, then yea it could be the drive box on the unit. I don't think I can explain how to replace that unit in a text message. One thing you can look at is take of the wheels that are drive wheels and make sure they aren't stripped out on the inside..
my self propelled Toro never fully disengages making pulling the mower backward very difficult. It's as if the drive wheels are locked when in fact the wheels want to push the mower forward. Is there an adjustment for that? The return spring next to the the belt transmission, has it weakened, needs replacing? tx
HI, I don't remember if that particular mower has an adjustment to loosen the belt tension or not. If it does, there's usually a knob or wheel up by where you engage the blade and it'll be obvious. Without seeing it, I am only guessing as to what could be wrong with it... I'd check the belt tension with the drive disengaged to see if it seems tight.. Has the belt been replaced recently? If so, is it the right belt?
@@JLPicard440 thanks, I'll check it out. In the maintenance receipts given to me there's no mention of a new belt, just regular tuneup things like air filter, oil, etc. thanks again.

What about that transfer case/differential , mine is a little different on the honda powered Troy-Bilt......does it require it's own gear oil or lube ?? thanks
HI Wayne.. you can test that gear box by taking the plastic cover off and manually turning the pulley by hand. Of course with the engine turned off! It'll turn the wheels by doing it that way. I don't think they have a liquid oil in them like a car does. I've had those apart before and it seems like it's just grease inside and it's sealed up somewhat to keep dust out.. I don't believe there's any access port on any brand to add oil to those. At least not that I've seen.

Hmmm. Is there a tension adjustment for the belt? With the engine off, can you see how much tension is on the belt when you engage the lever? It shouldn't be super tight, but not that loose either. How about the trans-axle, what if you took off the belt and turned it by hand, does it appear to slip? Without me being able to see it, I can only guess.. but let me know what you find, I'll try to help.
Thank you! Can you tell me how we know if it's the cable or the belt causing the self propel to not work? I believe the wheels still turn, but need to check. (I saw another video for fixing self propel, that replaces the belt). When we press the handle, it seems to sort of squeal and clunk and does move, but very little. Thanks again for any help!
No just the two levers on the handle. The cables are in tact and I can see how they go in the levers. The bottom lever is easy but the top lever...I put it in the holes but it won’t lay back flat. They are not bent out of shape, he just took them out of the holes and off.
Unfortunately, without seeing it, it would be difficult to say.. If you want to, post a couple of pictures of what you're looking at at my take a bath productions Facebook page and I'll take a look at it and see if I can help
My toro alittle newer , there's no transmission cover, also, removing the drive cable different then and not as easy, hard to see plastic tap on locking at the spring end, do you recommend replacing drive cable at same time replacing belt?
If the drive cable is smooth I'd leave it alone... if the mower has been kept outside, they tend to rust on the inside.. and usually don't work very smooth.. so it really depends on what kind of shape it's in.. hope that helps.
I bought a used toro recycler and it is very much like a push mower. I ordered a new traction cable. The lawnmower is a 2008. With a new cable....will it really go faster?
Susan Hoyt the only way it might go faster is if the belt has been slipping for some reason.... I don't see how the cable would make it go faster unless it wasn't engaging the belt all the way... hope that helps a little
Can you remove self propel parts in order to make the front wheels move freely like the back wheels? I am tired of having to repair self propel, and would like to convert it to a regular push mower. My mower is in excellent shape, and it is way too soon to replace.
mwhich50 I think u probably can ,... I couldn't say how to do it without seeing it again,.. but u actually gave me a idea for a video if I get another one!
Thanks for the quick response. Does the front axle go all the way through the transmission (gear?), or is it two pieces? i wonder how hard it would be to pull axle through?
I believe it's one piece, but I can't remember for sure.... Try taking the wheels off and see if you can remove the gears that drive the plastic inner teeth on the wheel... that might work and it would be easy and quick...
If you use your model number and go to a website like partstree, you can get the original or OEM number. Then If you go to Amazon and plug in that part number, often times it will show aftermarket options.. Stens included.
Great video- That's not my model mower, but I think I'll be able to fix mine with what you showed- Hopefully Toro's been using the same self propel setup for all models for the past 10-15 years. Sweet lift btw- that'd be great for an annoying wife...just lift 'er 10 feet up for an hour until you're ready for some more abuse-
Lol. Well, I replaced the self drive cable on my Toro model 20067 with the help of your video. The 20067 is rear drive. I needed to remove the handle(easy push in of both sides), then the rear wheels (just one bolt each), then the medium(kind of triangular shaped)black metal plates behind the wheels (3 bolts- one of them is harder to get to). Then I removed 2 small screws that hold the rear plastic part that opens up or stays closed(they're easy to get to). After that, I got access to the self propelled drive cable.
A lot of the time, I'll go to www.partstree.com to get the part numbers with their illustrated parts breakdown, and then go to Amazon or eBay to get the part.
patrick cordery I don't think so... if u adjust the cable to slow down that means it's slipping and it'll burn out the belt... they do make a personal pace that can be slowed down at the handle by just not pushing as hard,.. but still not very good...
So sorry I bought a Toro Personal Pace. First, learned I hate rear-propelled walk behinds. A front propelled walk behind is much easier to maneuver, especially when pulling back, lifting up and sliding around obstacles, etc. Second, the Personal Pace is garbage, I should have listened to my Spidey Sense when the Toro dealer was describing it. A traditional full self-propel is the best (with front propel) and with larger rear wheels. Third, the adjustment for the Personal Pace is a terrible design, plain stupid. And it never really has an ideal setting or adjustment, it either jerks too fast off the start or it never really propels...you end up pushing 99%. Forth, when backing up, pulling back...as you've probably heard, the rear wheels are almost always locked...they say the trick is to quite a bit before you actually need to stop and pull back is you need to fully stop, fully pull the Personal Pace handle up, stop, maybe push it forward again a little to loosen or disengage the propel mechanism, then try to pull back. What a bunch of garbage.
My experience exactly !! Mine was (is) a 2010 and it was left behind by a renter leaving the state, gave it to me, no grass catcher (rear bagger), rear wheels were not engaging well, I did the majority of pushing.... rear wheel fell off twice, discovered steel thread (female piece) were stripped, paid Toro service center $8 for steel replacement part, brought in to ask how to get it off, old man in service center area grabbed it and vice/wrenched it off, front desk guy wanter o charge me $15 for 10 min of service I didn't ask for...had to fight with management then they dropped it...Never again will I fight a Toro or service my machines at Denny's .... :~(
Temujin Khan No of course its not the problem every time... but this video is about the belt... it might have a bad cable, or bad wheels or a bad transmission...
Well, 8 months later+I'm working on my 20067 again b/c the self propel won't work, and I can't pull the mower backwards. It turned out that dirt was getting into the rear gearbox. The dirt+grease mixed together from the gears spinning+caked up so bad that I did a short video showing it. I'll post the video when I get some free time. The buildup is way beyond using an old toothbrush to clean the gears off. Good times😃

Very helpful, thank you
Glad it was helpful! You're welcome.. :-)
Would anyone happen to know the part number for a Stens replacement?
If you use your model number and go to a website like partstree, you can get the original or OEM number. Then If you go to Amazon and plug in that part number, often times it will show aftermarket options.. Stens included.
what size of square tip screwdriver do I need to remove the 3 bolts on the pulley cover to replace the belt?
I'm not sure what you mean.. if your talking about the bolts underneath... I think they were 10MM....
Clear basics. Including bolt head/wrench sizes would be helpful. Is the clutch an allen head bolt? What size?
Great video- That's not my model mower, but I think I'll be able to fix mine with what you showed- Hopefully Toro's been using the same self propel setup for all models for the past 10-15 years. Sweet lift btw- that'd be great for an annoying wife...just lift 'er 10 feet up for an hour until you're ready for some more abuse-
J Striker thank u.... yes that lift will lift any wife u throw at it!
Nice video, explained this very clearly and made the fix simple.
Where do I find the parts/new cable ?
A lot of the time, I'll go to www.partstree.com to get the part numbers with their illustrated parts breakdown, and then go to Amazon or eBay to get the part.
Take a Bath Productions thank you
Hello is there any way to adjuat the speed with with cable to slow the mower down
patrick cordery I don't think so... if u adjust the cable to slow down that means it's slipping and it'll burn out the belt... they do make a personal pace that can be slowed down at the handle by just not pushing as hard,.. but still not very good...
Lovin the hair!!
LOL... I get a hair cut 2 times a year whether I need it or not!
Thank you Sir.....
Most welcome
How about a diagnose on why it isnt working before replacing? I am sure the belt isnt the problem every time.
Temujin Khan No of course its not the problem every time... but this video is about the belt... it might have a bad cable, or bad wheels or a bad transmission...
Can you show how to replace the drive belt?
Yes, I did this one a while back... hopefully this will help You. Thanks for watching...

My drive has sring on handle end
OIC...
What cable do you replace?
Did you see the video? The whole thing is about the traction / drive cable??..
OK, traction/drive cable. Didn't know what it was called.
RocketMyDog1 n
NO Problem
A part number for the cables would have been great ..
Some models might be different. Check out www.partstree.com and plug in your model...
Good times😃
J Striker Eeeeeek
