My mom's side is from Jeju island. And my grandma who passed away was also a 해녀. She always say to us the sea is her friend. She goes to sea to hear the wave sound even before she got sick. This is such a breathtaking film. Can't wait to watch it with my mom. Thank you for making this wonderful film. I'm so proud of my 할머니. Miss her so much
It’s great to see the my subtitle work in this channel! It really was a tough job because the ladies in the video had a thick accent and was very hard to understand what they were trying to say. But now I’m just happy to see my work here!😊
There's a book named White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht about two Korean sisters separated by the second world war. One of them is a haenyeo. Its a great story for a movie
I’ve heard about the dwindling numbers of 해녀들 on Jeju Island for the last decade. It’s great there is this documentary to record and bring attention to the issue.
The Japanese need to be accountable for dumping all the nuclear waste into the ocean. What about all the sea creatures and all the sea food we eat.?? The Japanese government should pay to help clean up, help these Women, and other neighboring seafarers their the cause of this insane pollution.
Instead of paying to clean up and to help these people, Japanese government would bribe politicians around the world, especially the U.S. politicians, to evade taking the responsibility. That is what they have been doing since WWII.
I wonder if the documentary will talk about the massive amounts of money spent to clean up the water, treat it, and test it to be sure its level of pollutants is under the threshold set by the international community. Even the water stored up from the meltdown is less radioactive than the water that used to be released on a regular basis. They're very careful about it. But as usual these days people prefer headlines than actual information, and everyone WANTS to be offended instead of being informed.
I lived in South Korea for 13 years . I am a swimmer and my dream was to go to Jeju , which I did and spent some time with a group of ladies and went with them to help just for a day. I can not wait to see this as these ladies are amazing in every way.
Jeju island womans fierce. I remember when they were protesting about some Japanese naval ship, One of them even went inside the Sea and hugged the propeller of the ships saying "kill me if u can" they are badass although I was not against them they need to be respected, jewel of Korean
What's amazing is that Japan's release of radioactively contaminated water was fully supported by the President of South Korea. Not just the people of South Korea, but the people of Japan. The world was against it, but the president of South Korea is the strongest supporter of the Japanese government.
You should vote him out of office then. The overriding strength of democracy is that you can get people out of office. Don't think your opinion doesn't matter.
I don't think so. South Korean government brought the concern to international agencies and organizations. But many foreign experts including The International Atomic Energy Agency supported Japan's decision to release radioactive waste into the ocean. China banned seafood from Japan right away but South Korea could not due to the trading agreement with Japan.
I visited the island and had a dish that was prepared by one of the sea women and oh goodness, it was bomb diggity and ended up clearing three soju bottles on the spot. She told us all kinds of stories about her life as a sea woman and it was really emotional.
So unfortunate for the Korean people. On one side you have mass pollution from China and the "yellow dust" that comes from China to Skorea and pollutes it and the ocean water from Japan's nuclear ocean dumping, it's so unfortunate for the Korean people.
I wonder if the documentary will talk about the massive amounts of money spent to clean up the water, treat it, and test it to be sure its level of pollutants is under the threshold set by the international community. After reading The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See, I couldn't wait to see this documentary. The book, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND is an historical fiction that follows the Haenyeo over more than 6 decades of cultural and political change, this film propels the story forward. Having experienced both helps to fill in more context. Does anyone know what the current status of the sea health with the release of the radioactive water from Fukushima?
I don't appreciate the narrative of this trailer! They're literally blaming the entire climate/situation of their part of the ocean, on the people of Japan. And aren't showing the same accountability to China! Who've been polluting the ocean for almost 100 years. By expelling disgustingly high amounts of their nuclear waste, right into the ocean. Which is one of the major factors as to why they have their fishing ships go so far away from their lands.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I’m reading this book now and these women have captivated me full heartedly. 🙏🏼

Good to know that A24 is making documentaries and Malala is producing important stories. Always looking forward to the content on Apple TV

Fantastic book

Loved this book. Couldn’t put it down.
Great suggestion thank you.
@@beatrizcorreia9232 I liked the island of th sea women for the description of the haenyo life, not so much the character drama
as a Korean this really breaks my heart. Hope we will be able to continue this culture/way of life for long time, and protect the ocean.
I mean, it's still a very dangerous work that doesn't pay well you can't blame young people to want something else
It is an official selection of the Busan Int'l Film Festival! These women are fighters and protectors! Love and respect them.

Can't agree more. Shame on Japanese.
Actually That's exactly what they would never do.

It is shame that Korea government(Yoon) exists for Japan. They just defend for Janpan not for Korean.
Better than Moon Jae In that exists for North Korea

Fascinating
Reminds me of the free diving fisherwomen / grandmothers of Aomori, Japan.
