    P. somniferum is one of mother nature's most stunning, versatile and beautiful plants. I love the way they hybridise and produce myriad awesome new flower types and colours, I love the enjoyment of the multiple bees visiting the blooms in the early morning. I love when a good strain is correctly planted it will easily reach chest height at bloom time. I love the way farmers in Tasmania selected plants for maximum alkaloid content, then altered them to produce thebaine instead of other alkaloids. I love the taste of a traditional, sweet poppy seed strudel from my local cake shop...

    This is the most beautiful video.. the song too.. I cry each time I watch it for some reason.. just bought some afghan poppies unaware that they are the opium poppies from Afghanistan.. made it across the border.. and as a truth seeker, one into experimentation who believes very much in destiny, and decisions made from .. what I would perceive as the beyond.. it's the next step in my journey.. I'm excited.. it's so beautiful..
    Legitimate question , what equipment and how do you use it to capture a nice timelapse?? I've always wanted to do for my succulents/flowers and especially my cannabis.. but I can never figure it out ? Do I just leave a camera videotaping for as much as possible and then put all the videos together and speed it up ??! Would that not cause the video size to be like 500GB?!

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! As for your question, there is definitely better equipment to do timelapses, but up until my Forever Susan Lily video, I have been using my Samsung Galaxy phone to capture footage for my videos.
      I downloaded an app called 24/7 Timelapse. It allows me to automatically take pictures at intervals that I set. I don't have a whole lot of free space on my phone, (under 10 GB). Often times I will set the phone to take 1 picture ever 30 seconds. At this rate, I can leave it be for about half a day. So then I would plug my phone into my laptop which has a ton of available space and transfer the files to that twice a day. The size needed for these thousands of pictures do add up, but once I turn it into a 30 fps video, I end up with a video less than 1 GB per 3 minutes.
      I have started to use a GoPro HERO7 Black to do timelapse videos. There are no videos on my channel using that camera posted yet, though it's looking promising that the first one will be of my phalaenopsis orchid. The app on my phone and the GoPro both have things I like and don't like…

    So what's the deal with the opium poppy? Like unprocessed like this and with what it contains, it's a toxin right? to ward off bugs and animals that would eat it otherwise?

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I THINK opium has two possible major uses. One, it has something to do with seed production since it is found in the pods of the plant. Two, yes it is supposed to ward of bugs and animals that would otherwise eat them. Opium is bitter, but the seeds are nutritious, so much so that we humans actually bother harvesting, growing, and eating these tiny things.

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly don't know/remember. If it helps, it should take longer than one week. Also, you will know that the seeds are ripe if they make a rattling sound inside the pods when shook. Ideally you would shake the seeds out into a container rather than break open a pod that might still have unripe seeds along with the ripe ones. Of course you would shake the rest of the seeds out as they mature over the next few days.

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry. I don't know the exact day I planted, but it was in February. So that would make it about 60 days. This is a bit too short. Some stress probably caused the plants to flower sooner than they should have.
      Some people even sow the seeds in the fall. That's what someone like me with a hotter climate should have done. The poppies would grow slowly in the winter and resume in the spring. So that could make the time to bloom much longer. But they would get a headstart and be better prepared for my more subtropical climate.

      Always happy to help inform people on plants. By combust, I don't mean anything particularly dangerous, just that what little is found in the leaves would be chemically altered in an unfavorable way. Opium is heated and the resulting vapor is inhaled. Or the opium can be taken orally. If you're vaguely familiar with "smoking opium", the flame is not actually applied directly to the latex.

      I have not used this specific plant, but another one I grew this year. (Should be uploading a video of that one after finals).
      EDIT I knew that the days that I was photographing the poppy were breezy, but I did not know the wind was so strong that I would not be able to create a smooth time-lapse. I will not be uploading that video.
      I used almost all of the opium from one plant which was three flowers. The remaining amount came from a small flower that bloomed much later. I did not weigh this amount of opium, but it was a sphere about 5 millimetres in diameter. I took it after dissolving most of it in a cup of hot tea. The amount that did not dissolve may have been some other plant material which I also consumed.
      I definitely felt some effects. I have never used any prescription painkillers, so my description may be not so good. I have used 7 grams of kratom on a few occasions though.
      Anyway, I just felt good for several hours, kind of a mild body high. I eventually felt kind of tired, but ever so slightly nauseous and unwilling, but able, to fall asleep. I maintained all major motor functions throughout. Unlike with kratom, I did not feel itchy and was not constipated the day after. The effects of seven grams of kratom were more intense, so there is that. I weigh only about 130 pounds.
      Please keep in mind, that there is a danger of overdose with opium. Different plants may have differing amounts of morphine, codeine, etc.

      I believe that this is supposed to be more potent than poppy seed tea. The ethanol is better at dissolving each of the "main" alkaloids inside the pods than water is. The book titled "The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants: Ethnopharmacology and Its Applications" by Christian Rätsch describes a traditional method of preparation as follows,
      "The fresh, not fully ripened capsules can be made into an opium and rum pot. A container that can be completely sealed is filled to the brim with opium capsules, after which rum is added until all the fruits are covered. To improve the bitter taste and to potentiate the effects, several female inflorescences of Cannabis indica or Cannabis sativa and flowers of Datura metel or another Datura species (Datura spp.) may be added. Seal the container and allow the mixture to sit in a relatively warm location for six months. Then pour off the liquid and vigorously squeeze the opium capsules in a strainer. As little as one shot glass of the liquid will induce clearly perceptible opium effects."
      The book also goes on to explain the preparation of laudanum.
      "Laudanum is a tincture that was originally made of opium, saffron (Crocus sativus), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), clove powder (Syzygium aromaticum), and Spanish wine (cf. Vitis vinifera). It was later produced using just opium, saffron, and high-proof alcohol (70% ethanol) (opii tinctura). The pharmaceutically standardized tincture should contain about 1% morphine. The largest single therapeutic dose of opium tincture has been listed as 1.5 g."

      Immature seeds probably wouldn't sprout or produce undesirable plants. The plant should be allowed to mature its seeds undisturbed until one can hear seeds rattling when the dried pod is gently shook. Some seeds may actually fall out of the holes near the top of the dried pod. That is when the seeds are mature.

    I've started mines a few weeks ago will these still bloom before the frost arrives I'm in the UK

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to say. I pretty much have never had to deal with frost where I lived. I planted mine before winter because my winter temperatures typically didn't go below freezing for more than a few hours. And when winters were over, the temperatures got insanely hot, too hot for poppies. So the idea was to get the poppies to bloom before they burn up in the spring/summer heat. For your climate, you may have the choice between starting before winter and starting after. The hardest part for you will probably be getting the poppies to develop their first true leaves. Once that happens, you should be set. You may want to read up on your exact climate and the climate that poppies thrive in to get an idea of what care you should be giving your poppies.

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You've just addressed one of my biggest pet peeves in gardening. Information is often very vague. You hear things like part sun, part shade, light watering, moderate watering and the list goes on. Anyway, you might have guessed that I got the info, "late fall" from some other source. Sometimes it takes a little experience, knowledge, and intellect to figure out what exactly your plants need. I see you have already planted seeds based on your other comment, but I will give you and anyone else who is patient enough to read what this comment some tips.
      So Papaver somniferum is a plant that benefits from what's called 'cold stratification'. That is when the seeds are given cold temperatures and moisture before germination. When you live in a cold environment, you would not have to worry so much about this, assuming you plant in early spring like you would with most other seeds. If you live in a hot place, this becomes more important. The cold period may only last three months max and still not even be that cold. And early spring may already be pretty hot. Furthermore, like I said, the poppies will do better in temperatures between 10 - 25 °C.
      So let's say you plant the seeds in the late fall. I would say to you it does not matter a whole lot what exact day since this cold stratification will last several weeks. If each season lasts three months, late fall is going to be the beginning of the third month of fall. Of course, we don't all live in some paradise where we get to experience the full effect of each season. Still, the beginning of the third month will probably do fine, but for a (maybe) better timing, you may want to consider finding out what period of 4 weeks will the average temperature of your area be above 0 °C and below 10 °C. The number of weeks and temperatures I have just given should be flexible. By this I mean, you may find a period of 4 weeks where the temperature is not quite in the range or a period where the temperature is in the range, but less than 4 weeks. I would say don't worry about that too much. Just don't go too below freezing as you don't want to damage your seeds by exposing them to ice from the moisture. You may cause microscopic fractures in the already tiny seeds if water freezes on their surface.
      There are websites that can give you the recorded temperatures of your area from the past. I use wunderground.com/history/ The assumption that the temperature of say December 1, 2018 will be the same as December 1, 2019 should be good enough. Remember, look for the average temperatures. Not the highs or the lows. Use this in combination with your local weather forecast for best results. Don't make the same mistake as I did where I was so focused on cold stratification and forgot that I lived in a desert. I should have started earlier to give them a better chance at them facing the scorching sun. My point is temperature of spring and early summer will be more important than stratification temperatures.

    • @nichegarden
      @nichegarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They will likely not respond with rapid growth to the decreasing temperatures that winter will bring (assuming you live in the northern hemisphere). I would pay close attention to their rate of growth. If they seem to stop growing all together due to the cold, try not watering for a while. They have taproots that should grow deep into the ground in search of water so they will likely be fine. To answer your question, they will probably not bloom in November or December. The trick will be to get them to survive the winter in their immature state and give them the warmer conditions of spring that allow them to grow faster and bloom. This shouldn't be too hard since they do like colder temperatures compared to other flowers and you do live in a warmer climate with I assume a warmer than average winter. You may be well on your way to having better blooms than me.
