James is named after James Furze, a friend of Edmund Ward's son. James's catchphrase "Here's James!" seems to be a reference to Jack Torrance's catchphrase "Here's Johnny!" which is heard in the famous 1980 horror film The Shining. James was originally illustrated in The Three Railway Engines as the red engine who tried to push Henry out of the tunnel. However, children began sending letters to Awdry asking why James was painted red prior to the events of Thomas the Tank Engine. In response, Awdry decided to make the Red Engine a completely different character altogether. In Sodor: Reading Between the Lines, James is said to have been sold to the NWR in 1923; this creates anachronisms with events laid out in The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways. In the first series, James was formally introduced in Thomas and the Breakdown Train, which was said to have been his first day on the railway. However, he had appeared in every prior episode as a background character. This may have been done to populate the sets, similar to how the Märklin Engine was used in later episodes. A large scale working replica of James was built by BBC Visual Effects for a tour in 2003, along with Thomas, Percy, Harold and Jack. The battery-powered locomotive is listed in the 2004 Guinness Book of Records as the largest model railway engine ever built, at 2.64 x 1.5 x 6.52 metres. James has been shown to be quite popular among several people who worked on the series: Andrew Brenner has said in an interview that James is one of his favourite characters, along with Toby, Bill and Ben. Mara Wilson stated on Twitter that James was her favourite character. Sam Barlow has said in an interview that James is one of his favourite characters, along with Gordon, Victor and Kevin. In Toby's New Whistle, James revealed that he once had a three-chime steam whistle. Since the twenty-first series, James along with Belle are the only characters to have the same voice actors in both English dubs, albeit with different accents. He is also the only male member of the Steam Team to have the same voice actor in both English dubs. In the French dub of the Model Series, James was known as Jacques. James' Wooden Railway, Wood, Plarail, Motor Road and Rail, Tomy and TrackMaster toys omit his pilot wheels, making him an 0-6-0 instead of a 2-6-0, much like the real members of his class. James is the only Steam Team member with a one-syllable name. He also has the shortest name out of all the Steam Team members in pronunciation terms. James is the only 2-6-0 (mogul) locomotive in the television series to be named and seen. 3 of James' wooden railway toys (the original, lights and sounds and Team Colours variants) were among the toys that were part of the Lead Paint Crisis in 2005.
James' shed is technically Tidmouth. The first two books started at Vicarstown, but following an agreement with the LMS in 1925 (when this book takes place) to run their express to Barrow, the NWR headquarter moved to the other end of the mainline at Tidmouth.
This is amazing Jeffrey I enjoyed watching this a few years ago I enjoyed watching it a few months ago and now I enjoy re-watching this again at least James proved that he was a really useful engine
I think Edward meant trucks need to be bumped only if they misbehave. Peter Sam was also mentioned to never bump them unless they misbehave. Doing it when they are good causes them to want to get revenge, but treated well, they behave.
And don’t forget, sir Handel was bumped off the rails by the coaches after accidentally jolting them too hard when he stopped to avoid sheep on the track.
As Annie and Clarabel were used as some of the coaches in James and the Coaches, it made sense in "The Adventure Begins" that Annie and Clarabel used to be James' coaches
Fun fact: a television show which is based of taf and irl trains has episodes that say stories about many books (which appeared to be the ones adwry wrote and some illustrations of the stories they were painted by an other illustrator instead of there being the original ones)
I've never understood why in the book when James first arrived on the island of Sodor, he started off with a black paint job and later gets a red paint job. But on the show he appears as a red engine
The model makers probably didn't have the time or budget to repaint James' model or make a duplicate with black paint. Or maybe Britt Allcroft and David Mitton thought that children would have a hard time recognizing James if he changed colors?

Very interesting facts about James
The red engine who tried to push henry was comfurmed to be either eagle or winston

INDEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TMI (to much information) bro
The new 2022 Thomas Wooden Railway fixes the wheel inconsistency. They added his front wheels so he is now made as a 2-6-0

This book was always one of my favourites and some of my favourite episodes too
Mine too.
7:04 if you look, possibly Edward is in the background, so it could be him making the remark.
Also, Gordon frowning at the end is because he was shunting cars
Fabulous I believe the next one will be tank engine Thomas again as it’s the fourth book of the Railway series
Yess my favorite character in thomas the tank engine and friends
Mine too.

I like the fact these versions revised editions of your earlier videos, keep up the stellar work 👍

If this book was Wilbert's least favourite that he wrote, what was a his most favourite?
I have James and the top hat along with Thomas and Gordon from the book “Thomas the Tank Engine” in a children’s story collection book.
I've never understood why in the book when James first arrived on the island of Sodor, he started off with a black paint job and later gets a red paint job. But on the show he appears as a red engine

@@InventorZahrandef the first one
The amount of coaches probably has something todo with the restraints model trains can have
That, the size of the sets, and the model team's limited budget in the early seasons.
@@InventorZahran that too 🙂
I prefer the books as there is more realism and more stuff that was left out of the adaptations.
In all fairness some of it wasn’t even their fault. They had a huge limitation of sets at the time.
I wonder what the nameless Tank Engine would have looked like.

Cool did😎
In the book the fat controller speaks to James when he's in the shed but this page wasn't seen
When henry and gordon are tesing james henry is blue but in the series he is green
Yes we know what colors are
That was because they didn’t have the budget to repaint Henry blue or make a new blue model so he is green.
Um cool
