  • I've finally used this sub enough to formulate a follow up review! Long story short. It's an amazing subwoofer. Probably the best on the market today. But as with all things I've had some issues...

    Completely agree with client budget vs expectation. Even if you gave them 8, they would want it to sound like 20. DJs are in the most part ignorant to the damage they can cause by hitting the reds on their mixer. They think it's simply volume indicator.

    Thats why i dont let other people to operate my audio stuff, by our selves as a owner all care we've done to preserved the lifespan of our sound equipment cause not only it is expensive stuff it is also part of the business for some owner and maybe a hobbies like mine but others who borrowed, rent and whatsoever mostly not all specialy w/o out our presence operate it w/o care as long it is crank up the volume all the way to its limit w/o any precaution most of a time,.. I believe no matter what brand of audio equipment they are they can't last, if uses incorrectly for a long hours of continuous playing loud music....

    Just used for the first time. It is loud and deep+ the sound is well rounded unlike the bandpass design of dxs18.

      just don't get band pass, so unmusical sounding and just not deep.

    Sounds to me like your subs had the same issue I brought up a while back with mine, where they can't take much abuse because the limiters don't seem to help prevent overdriving the woofer. Since the issue I had with it smelling close to limit, I have been the only person operating mine, and have been very careful not to push them too hard. I agree with your comments about the sound quality, they sound excellent and get really, really loud. Just a shame about the limiters, maybe Yamaha can adjust them a bit with a firmware update so they limit slightly earlier, just like what they did with the dzr tops when they were first released. I'm a DJ with quite heavy demands for my subs, so I'm always careful not to push anything too hard, hence why haven't had any issues since. Maybe they would benefit from an external compressor, like a dbx driverack or something, so you can limit the signal going to them so you can't send too higher volume through a mixer.

    • @g1981c
      @g1981c 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      were they brand new when they smelled ?
      you may want to ask around i think it might be normal for some woofers to smell at first but i wouldn't bet money on it.

    • @soundman123
      @soundman123 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same issue... sound on certain tracks distort but the limit light doesn't come on. Same with the dzr tops. Also this sub is cheaply built.. the subs should have had 2 handles per side for their size and weight.

    I have mostly destroyed subs by not having a decent high pass filter and then playing too loud outdoors etc. Over-excursion will destroy the cone easily. They will not rip but they will get some dents and after that they will make some noise and rattle even at lower volumes. But that's with passive subs.

    How big was the gig where the DXS18xlf got blown?? I have a pair of DXR 15's with the QSC KW181's and this has covered outdoor gigs with around 400 people. Whilst the DXS18xlf may sound better, the KW181's are so reliable and can still take quite a lot. I know a few rental companies that have a lot of KW181's and none of them have had any issues.

    When I rent my equipment out I stay with it and run the sound through out the night so I know everything is done right I’ll never let someone rent and go off and do what ever with my gear because other djs and people in general be tearing shit up and stuff coast too much!

  • @abielpangga6314

    hey, i recommend you check out danley sound labs. you can rent those out all day and not blow the driver. the th118 is a beast. give it a 1500 watt amplifier and im sure people wont need to push them to their limits. one of those will math 3 dxs XLF's.

      Bro, Danley is hands down insane. Probably the best sound I’ve ever heard. I’m a RCF fanboy and own a bunch of RCF and now LD systems gear. One of my employees owns a stupid amount of Danley gear and I was blown away when I heard em.

    Has anyone tried the RCF 8003-AS MKII vs the Yamaha DXS18XLF? I can look at specs and compare them all day, but I am looking for real world experience with both. I had a set of the Yamaha but had to sell them before I was actually able to use them. My band has the RCF but I am not sold on them. They are OK. They seem to take a beating. They limit VERY fast no matter what I do to control it.

    Okay so, I thought it was me, but mine got blown twice. And I never had this issue with any of my previous subs. it is better than my QCS kw181. But right now my QSC works and my yamaha DXS xlf18 is blown for the second time waiting for the replacement woofer.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you get your replacement woofer you should cut the basket out of your old driver and see if the magnet is shifted or if it is truly blown and the copper coil is melted. I'm thinking Yamaha might be using some sub-par glue to hold the magnet in place and they have a shifting problem. If it is the case hopefully they are realizing it and fixing the issue.

  • @djtecthreat
    @djtecthreat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry about the blown drivers, that sucks. What FW rev were you running? Also, did you try to get that fixed under warranty? Whats the point in paying for speakers touting a 7 year warranty if you're shelling out the $600 for a smoked driver?

    I’ve just recently bought 4x DXS18XLFs and 4x DZR12 + the cases. Great sounding system.
    But when using DXS18XLF with a DZR12 for the 1st time the zip on the case of one of the DXS18XLF broke like yours, very disappointing.
    I probably will repair it with Velcro.
    I’m curious since making this video, have you had any more of the Zips on your cases break?

    curious to ask (if I may) what your opinion would be on the DXS15xlf's. i currently own DXR15's (first generation), they seem to do the job for most of my events/gigs. I've rented subs when doing outdoor stuff. considering DZR12's with DXS15xlf's, or perhaps DXS18xlf's would be better? i usually play venues under 350 capacity, with an average of 100-150 guest (peaked at 200). i don't have a lot of flexibility with transportation, so wondering if 15" would be sufficient or if I should just go for broke with the 18"'s and get a bigger car/van/truck. thoughts?

    • @abielpangga6314
      @abielpangga6314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the reason the qsc 181 will not blow is because the amp used in significantly weaker then the driver to avoid drivers from blowing.

    • @bensmith1195
      @bensmith1195 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I agree. I removed the driver out of mine (just out of curiosity) and it is a decent driver. I looked it up and it looks like a custom Celestion ftr18-4080 (not sure which variant). I reckon however that Yamaha should have gone with a B&C driver like qsc did with their new ks118 as they seem to be a little better and are tried and proven drivers, and would have coped with the demand the Yamaha sub puts on it.

  • @djsmiley09
    @djsmiley09 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would you rent these out without a driverack? You need some sort of driverack or a hard limiter set between subs and mixer for any kind of rentals. Just a suggestion.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The majority of my rental customers are novices when it comes to pro audio. A driverack would just confuse them. Also as it turned out the sub wasn't blown. It had a shifted magnet from being slammed down too hard. Because of this I adjusted my rental inventory to lighter weight 15" subs. I no longer rent out 18" subs.

  • @algkep

      I'm not an official Yamaha dealer and misuse isn't covered under their warranty so I just order a replacement driver through FDW. It's the distribution arm for Full Compass. They're usually pretty good when it comes to parts. Once I pop it out and replace it I might see if there is a recone kit somewhere online. Maybe I can rebuild the blown driver and swap out the other one that doesn't seem to be working correctly.

      I don't have the DXR12MKII. I just have the DXR15MKII but to be honest I tend to prefer 12" tops over 15" tops. They are usually a little more punchy and when using with a sub they are a solid combo. The only reason I bought the 15's was because a rental customer requested them.
