  • The World War One memorial plaque was issued to the families of every soldier, sailor, airman, merchant seaman and nurse who were tragically killed in that conflict. Curator and Antiques Roadshow expert Mark Smith talks us through the bronze artefact that no family wanted to receive.

    One hung on the living room wall of a relative who's house was being searched during the troubles in N.Ireland. when an officer noticed it he told his men to stop what they were doing and get out..give a salute to the plaque and left.

    I remember my Grandfather showing me one. His cousin, a Lieutenant in the cavalry, who died in the last months of the war, Henry Norman Kay, of The Manchester Regiment. I wish I had it as I served in active combat myself.

    I have one in memory my Great Uncle, my Nans brother. 13309 Fusilier John Parry was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Loos, 25th September 1915. John was just a few weeks away from his 21st birthday.😢

    Excellent video, I didn't know what the little number at the lion's back paw meant and had to check for the designer's initials with a magnifying glass but, yes, they are there. I have my grandfather's plaque, scroll and letter from the king. The worker's number is 22 and the Woolwich Arsenal mark is on the back, something I never noticed before!
    I was told that Britania was depicted without her usual shield (as seen on the reverse of the old pennies) because this was the war to end all wars, making the shield obsolete. She is holding a laurel wreath, the sign of Victory. The leaping dolphins are a sign of Peace. The sprig of oak leaves as a sign of Valor and right at the very bottom the British lion is crushing the German eagle.

    I have 2 sets with the parchments from 2 relatives framed in my dining room, they were my grans brothers and always hung in her dining room. I also have separately framed the condolence letters from the King.

      Condolence that mofo was part of it the poor or regular people were slaughtered whilst the so called king was high and mighty on his throne. F-k that guy for being a part in reducing the population wake up. I’m truly sorry for your loss truly these F-KS don’t truly care because it doesn’t effect them. Like now wake up a nuke is going to be detonated and Russia will be blamed. I’m across the Atlantic but it will affect us too. Wake up pay attention to what’s going on. Both our countries are stoking this war no matter what. Be prepared. I hope this reaches you in good health.

    I have a Medal of Appreciation that size from WWI . It was my Grandfather's
    " In recognition of those who served freedoms cause from Orange County California"
    It's bronze has an Orange with leaves.. orange groves and wooden oil derricks on one side...the other the US Emblem with Two Soldiers one on each side of emblem!
    It says " World War Heroes"
    It doesn't mention any numeral! Pretty cool!

    Very interesting .I’m glad I saw this as I had no idea they existed. I’m from Long Island and I’m pretty sure it is a British memorial. We have a memorial in smith town.

    I remember my father had one of these obviously it wasn’t his but I think it was a member of either my grandfather or grandmother family, I know that my grandmother’s brother Brian had both his eyes blown out in the First World War, he lived in a home for the blind in Brighton somewhere, the one that my father had was on a wooden base cause I remember cleaning it cause he collected brass and copper ornaments, I always thought it belonged to my grandfather but he wasn’t killed in the Great War he was wounded tho in the leg that I’ve been led to believe that he was wounded in the battle of the Somme.

    Very interesting as ive been collecting these as well as trench art for around three years now. So far I have 109 death plaques and currently in January 2024 they sell for between £60 - £120 roughly. Obviously if you have soldiers that died on the first day of The Somme or sailors that died at the Battle Of Jutland these can make alot more money. Also as the presenter says if you find one that commemorates a female, as you can imagine they are priceless!

    could a person still apply for the penny if it was originally not given out?

    • @TheCardiganR
      @TheCardiganR ปีที่แล้ว

      No, because as far as the government are concerned, they were all given out at the time to eligible families.
