2010년부터 시민들에게 개방된 달천 편백숲은 울산에서 드물게 수령 30년 이상의 경관과 '피톤치드 살림욕' 이 입소문을 타면서 인근 주민들의 휴식공간으로 주목을 받고 있습니다.
편백나무는 측백나무과에 속하는 나무로 일본이 원산지이며, 우리나라 남부지방에 조림된 뒤 성공적으로 생육하여 우리의 나무가 된 침엽수라고 합니다.
편백나무는 아토피, 알레르기등 각종 피부질환의 원인이 되는 집먼지 진드기의 생육억제에 탁월한 효과가 있으며 이외에도 나쁜 냄새를 없애주고 유해물질을 중화시켜줄뿐 아니라 학습능력을 향상 시켜주는등 다양한 효능이 있는 것으로 보고되고 있습니다.
편백나무는 소나무,잣나무등 다른 침엽수보다 피톤치드 발생량이 월등 할 뿐만아니라 그 효능도 뛰어난 것으로 여러 실험 결과 입증되고 있습니다.
또한 같은 수종이라도 우리의 땅과 기후조건에 적합하게 생장했기 때문에 한국에 더욱 효과적일 것으로 추측된다고 합니다.
