I, with some other viewers, would argue that the midget submarine sunk by the destroyer Ward was the first Japanese warship sunk. It wasn't a great warship but it was still a naval vessel designed and employed for war. It should also be noted that President Roosevelt extended our declaration of war back in time to the battle: "I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire." Thanks for an otherwise fine presentation on this fascinating battle!
The Japanese went to Wake overconfident, even announcing victory before their troops even entered their landing craft. Then USMC shore batteries opened up and the Wildcats dropped their payloads. The Marines and civilians worker volunteers gave the Japanese a bloody nose and then some.
@moosifer3321 Truth. When the Japanese occupied the Andaman islands they confiscated livestock and a local youth, outraged that his family's only food source was essentially robbed, fired an air rifle at the ransacking Japanese troops. None was hurt but they proceeded to massacre or execute many inhabitants of the islands, the youth being among the victims. The survivors described the Japanese troops as borderline insane with rage and vengefu, never mind that none of them was even scratched. And this is just one of many many examples.
@moosifer3321 Yes. The Japanese troops would go on rampages for even petty incidents. There's a reason why many of Japan's neighbors to this day get enraged when Japan claims victimhood in the war. Both North and South Korea have jointly protested, imagine that.
I believe the first recorded and confirmed Japanese warship sunk in WW2 was the Japanese submarine I-70. This was by aircraft from the USS Enterprise on Dec. 10th, 1941. On this same day the Royal navy battleship Prince of Wales and battlecruiser Repulse were sunk the same day by the Japanese navy. Dec. 10th, 1983 happens to be my wedding anniversary, but lets not the wife know please. Our ship is still sailing!
In truth, he is both wrong and right. The midget submarines destroyed on 7 December don’t count, since they were not considered fleet units. Fleet submarines were considered fleet units and major warships. By calendar date, the first fleet unit sunk was the fleet submarine I-170. She was bombed and sunk by SBD dive bombers from USS Enterprise at about 1330 on 10 December, while the destroyers Hayate and Kisaragi were sunk on the 11th. There is a small problem, however, called the International Dateline. when it was noon on the 10th at Pearl Harbor, it was 1030 on the 11th at Wake Island. That means Hayate sunk 0652 on the 11th, was sunk at 0822 On the 10th Pearl Harbor time. In effect, both destroyers had been on the bottom at least three hours BEFORE I-170 was sunk. So, if you go by the local date and time I-170 was sunk first, but, in fact the destroyers sank before she did, if you normalize the dates and times. This is the kind of stuff that drives most historians mad!
If midget submarines count, then two of those weresunk, just before the Pearl Harbor attack started, on December 7,1941. If a full sized submarinecounts, t hen dive bombers from the Enterprise sunk one on December 10, 1941.
Decent narration that needs to use correct terms. It would be better to explain a term than fake it. Turrets are armored and sit of barbettes which are not on small ships. These are simply mounts whether they are open or enclosed and have no real armor. Secondly, the inappropriate use of random films that show equipment that was not at Wake Island. The disappearing rifles were US coastal defense guns of heavy caliber. Hellcats and Corsairs were either not in service or built adds to confusion. I see that the title, Hidden History, is denoting the script is written by throwing excrement at the wall and using what sticks.

First warship sunk by the US was a midget submarine by the USS WArd dec 7 1941
You are right.
Yeah..we all know that. We also know that it didn't mean jackshit..there's no comparison...
The U.S. hadn't declared war at that time.
That is generous calling one of those things a warship.
Thank you.
Also this battle depicts the only time during World War II that shore batteries repulsed an amphibious landing 🇺🇸.

Leading to a demonstration of Japanese `Honour` dished out to the surviving defenders.

The first SURFACE SHIP, NOT the first warship! The mini-subs sunk at Pearl Harbor were the first warships (diminutive as they might have been) sunk.
I don't remember the exact date, but a US submarine also sank a Japanese I class sub before the end of December
Also, nice footage of F4Us when talking about the fighters attacking the Japanese fleet.
Rest in Peace brave Marines
Japaneese 🤣
Parsons Marine Steam Turbine Company was a British engineering company based on the River Tyne at Wallsend, North East England.
The six 5" guns were 5"/51 guns that had been removed from USS Texas.
Good video thanks. Merry Christmas.

Good call, superceeded, MUCH later by USS Ward`s Midget,
The first Japanese warship to be sunk was the submarine I-70, which was sunk by aircraft from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise on December 10th
Splendid video HIDDEN HISTORY.I tip my hat to ya on a great job.

tell the rest of the story about Wake / the later betrayal of the defenders and the merciless slaughter of the defenders by the japanese
If those poor guys had known what was in store for them they would likely had fought to the last man. 😢
In Naval Artillery you fire shells, not rounds.
Hayate forgot to fly her detonation flag on that day
Hayate wasn't running a detonation flag...
Ward sunk mini sub
5” shell base of the conning tower
U.S. gave them hell at WAKE
Watching football and also watching this, thanks!
Kamikaze class sounds ominous.
japan enjoyed a long conquest
Kinda relative.
Got their butt handed to them in the end.
...and a azz whopping at the end.
American flying Tigers sank a Japanese warship if that counts.
A ship without a name...
