    This bloke is a life-saver during virus lock-down. From a standing start and pulling an old banjo from the back of a cupboard Jim’s teaching me stuff I thought was way beyond me. Now I just need it to sound musical and that’s the joy of these simple lessons, I know he’ll get me there. Thanks from the UK Jim.

    Mr Pankey, I've never thought I had a musical bone in my body but I got a banjo as a joke gift a year ago in 2021 for Christmas. Now I can't sing a lick but by God I can now play cripple creek on the 5 string banjo! Thank you so much.

    So after visiting the Rootpile Camp at Burning Man this year I was convinced that I could learn to play the banjo. I have never played an instrument before but I decided it was time to learn to play the Banjo. Thanks to Jim Pankey and his approach to teaching, this non-musician has learned to play Cripple Creek. Now I have the confidence to learn to play other songs and I am sure my banjo will be a lifetime friend. Thanks Jim!

      43 here. Bought a korean unit too.... I'm after a goodtime II or an RK. I like the songster minus the orange color. The deering, very nice but dislike blonde. The next one up has planetaries, dark stain, spikes and high $ tag. I don't need spikes obviously. I just keep looking around.. the korean is disappointing but I'm hanging in there. Just neato to hear a similar story

    Hey Jim, a progress update.. I bought my banjo a few weeks back to learn how to play minstrel and old timey music. Jim,Thank you again for the detailed tuning possibilities. From the first 4 videos(bluegrass), was getting a little frustrated and I have pretty good patience. All my things learned just never sounded 'like yours', Was using a smart phone app waiting for my electronic tuner to show up. I thought i was pretty close in tune with the phone app. Low and behold after my electronic tuner showed up,i was way off on all strings. now things 'sound right'. The app i used really didnt do input from the banjo.It just toned,what each string should sound like. Something as simple as this was keeping me trumped up,,,a little. Didn't know any different bottom line. Barry

    Hi Jim. Loving these vids. I finally got Cripple Creek today. A couple of weeks ago it seemed so difficult. Mind you, before completing lesson 3 I had a quick look at lesson 4. When I got to begin Lesson 4 I was going along and just couldn't work out how the words fitted the tune. I ran the video back and realised I'd started part the way through it and had missed out the very beginning and first few notes. Suddenly it all fell into place. Still slow though but loving it.

    Hi Jim, I'm a total greenhorn as of a few months now but loving it so far. I've been working hard at my timing and finger position during the first three lessons of Cripple Creek and really love the approach you give. So, thank you. My question is this, I want to be able to sing along to Cripple Creek, to help my timing and to give each note more of a "meaning" in my head, if that makes any sense?.?. Yet, most videos I've found of banjo players singing this song while playing seem to be doing more of a strumming or frailing, which in my opinion gives the song a different feel or tempo. Do you know any sources of the entire song being sung (each stanza) using the three-finger pick style? Hopefully not too fast 😉

I am hoping to get some advice on the slides however. Listening to you perform the slide on string 3 sounds completely different than the slide I perform. yours sounds like your just dropping to the next note, while mine sounds like I'm hitting a few in between. Am i pressing too hard on the string and it makes that sound when running over the fret? Also I hope the holidays find you well.

      If you’re comfortable with adding another song, absolutely. Just don’t stop practicing the first one.

    Jim I’m gonna need you to slow it wayyyy down. My brain and fingers want to fight eachother constantly. It’s pissing me off.
    All jokes, you are crazy helpful I’m just slow

      Jokes aside, you can always slow these down. Gear/Three Dots, or something will allow you to change the playback speed.

    Lovin' these, Jim! I've played guitar professionally as a pro for years (please check out my channel and maybe subscribe..? I just did.) and a dear friend who plays banjo professionally gave me a banjo he built when he was in college. In a year I haven't gotten around to learning it...First time I picked it up I broke a string (I NEVER break guitar strings!). Well, with the world in quarantine I figured, "if not now, when?" I happened on your lessons hoping to just learn a couple picking patterns; I'm learning SO much more. Planning to work through each of these lessons tomorrow in depth...gonna be quite an unusual Easter Sunday. Thanks and God bless.

    • @JimPankey
      @JimPankey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since you already play guitar you'll probably pick up banjo pretty quickly. Best advice I can give you is... "it's not a guitar". :)
      Looking forward to hearing some banjo on your channel!

    Jim, some of your videos have no sound. Lesson 4 is fine but lessons 1-3 and 5 have no sound. I've tried Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

      @@JimPankey it might be that one of my speakers, not sure if it's the left or right, is broken and maybe the audio is recorded on just the left or right. Anyway I'll get my speaker fixed. Just wondered if I was the only one. Thanks.
