😂 They’ve always gone back and forth copying each other. Universal was so ticked when Disney opened MGM Studios (“Hollywood Studios”) in Orlando. Disney has never been as successful as executing a true studio-style park, though (their studio park in Paris is the worst Disney park by a mile). Universal’s hindrance was always their over-reliance on screen-based experiences and lack of remarkable IP. But now there seems to be a bit of a reversal, with Disney incorporating more screens and fewer animatronics, and Universal using more practical effects instead of screens. Now that Harry Potter, Nintendo, and Dreamworks are part of their stable of IP (in addition to Universal Monsters, Jurassic Park, etc.), combined with the larger scale and higher caliber of their latest offerings, they are poised to topple the Magic Kingdom.

What Disney doesn't realize is that up until Epic Universe, most people went to BOTH parks on their trip to Orlando. Main trip is the Disney and just couple days at Universal. But those same people will now be faced with THE question. Now that Universal is full week theme park, can we afford both parks anymore? If not, which park should we go to? If enough people choose Universal, and they will at least in the first couple years because of brand new Epic Universe experience, they will start to see a meaningful drop in their theme park attendance.

Hey! Really interesting commentary. A few thoughts from a UK-based theme park fan...
It's a massive oversight to not mention the expansion to the Studios park in Paris. They're literally doubling the size of that park and bringing in three new lands, including Frozen. I think that's going to drag a lot of traffic over from the UK when it opens. On the other hand, Paris can be expensive for a lot of UK visitors. At certain times of the year, it's only a few hundred £ cheaper to go to Paris than Orlando, which is insane when Paris is a 50 minute flight away and Orlando is 9 hours. If the Universal UK park drives prices down at Paris as they fight for the same guests - AWESOME.
The last thing to mention about Universal UK is that if they're clever, they'll avoid the seasonal opening schedule of other UK theme parks and figure out a way to bring as much inside/under cover as possible. British people will absolutely go to a theme park in the winter - the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and the popularity of DLRP at Christmas proves that. Universal UK needs to be a year-round park for sure.

The problem Universal faced is the Disney resorts are more developed (more parks & hotels) and attract more visitors resort to resort.
So, Universal is countering this in two ways. One, by expanding existing resorts to better compete (Epic Universe for Orlando).
Two, by expanding with more dispersed parks/experiences. Instead investing in a "2nd Orlando" mega resort, they are investing in several small & medium sized projects. Look what their Europe strategy seems to be. Instead of opening a Disneyland Paris seized resort (two parks, with room for 3). They are building a Beijing sized resort near London, while likely acquiring PortAdventura. Individually, both are smaller than Disneyland Paris, but combined give Universal a bigger theme park presence in Europe than Disney. This can also be seen in the US with the mini Texas park & HHN experience in Vegas.
The one area of business Universal doesn't have an answer for is cruises. Disney is a small presence in that market, but has high profit margins. Perhaps Universal can partner with a cruise line chain like Royal Caribbean, or have very large resort hotels in the cruise ship region.

Even if the parks are spun off and can keep everything they bring in for park-related expenses and growth, the parks would never be able to recover as quality might continue to tumble even if Disney Parks & Experiences was its own thing like Mercedes-Benz and private like Hershend as Apple or whomever might end up putting all the parks into licensing deals-not just Tokyo and that might throttle expansion more because no one cares about introducing something original to the parks anymore. Its only that The Country Bears and Figment are so tied to the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT being basically opening day attractions (okay, Figment wasn't ready to open with the park, but Figment and Dreamfinder were still there basically day 1) that they are simply accepted into the Disney/Disney Parks Zeitgeist that Western River Expedition just wouldn't have. Now if Lone Ranger actually worked out, maybe things would be different there and making Tiana for Disneyland and Lone Ranger-based rehash of Western River for the MK version would work-but as Jack of DSNY newscast brought up that even though Princess and the Frog is set in the 1920's between WWI and the Great Depression, Louisiana was acquired in 1803, before mining in the west of what would've been Spanish/Mexican territory at the time of the purchase. What comes next after Mexican Cession in 1848: Gadeson Purchase (the southern part of Arizona/bit of New Mexico) after the Civil War (Antebellum kind of woke and that was basically what Splash Mountain represented) and going back to that wouldn't make sense. After that, Alaska and Hawaii. Universal owns Balto, so that doesn't work, we could do Moana for a Hawaii and they can do this credibly because of Aulani. They could go back to 1920's Chicago using research for the original DLP Main Street Plans and Dick Tracy Crime Stopper ideas

Universal can literally end this battle as soon as epic universe opens if they announce they are gonna close portions of studios and reinvest in new rides or a new land. Studios doesn’t have that I need to ride it ride like islands does and they could swing another haymaker on Disney by announcing a big ride for studios after epic opens.

As long Iger remains at the helm, Universal will be top dog. But to correct you, Disney will be investing $60bil into their parks.

Im sorry if this is a controversial opinion to share, but im so over this "highly details and expensive themed land to one IP" thats been prevalent in Theme Parks the last few years.
This may just be me, but i think the best themed land Disney has done in the last 10 years is Pixar Pier. A gorgeous retheme of an already great area that showcases plenty of Pixar franchise and not just one like Toy Story or Incredibles. I hope whatever Disney does next is more similar to this as opposed to Pandora or Galaxies Edge.

Disney also has much more presence in the vacation industry - cruises, resorts, etc. They are stretched thin, where Universal is focused on their parks.

The uk visitors are here 14 days but they don't do the parks all that time. They just stretch their days longer. Space it out more

I think in Orlando there is plenty of tourist to go around. Kids before 10, Disney. After 10, Universal. So younger families will stay at Disney and maybe do 1 or 2 days at Universal. Older families, stay and do 3 days at Universal, 1 or 2 days at Disney. The key thing is to get travel agents on board.

actual competition for disney should be good for consumers, where it's discounts/price drops or just new innovations

My understanding is that the UK park will have no cloned experiences from Orlando, so rather it would be a completely different experience at the Orlando parks compared to the UK park
