  • Ever wanted to build your own Mars rover? I talked to Airbus engineers working on the ESA ExoMars rover about how you can!
    Well.... let's face it. Unless you have €1.3bn lying around such a project is a bit beyond your reach. But you can still learn about how the next generation of Mars rover is going to do science on the Martian surface!
    You can learn more about the ExoMars mission here! www.airbus.com/space/space-ex...
    At the moment the rover is going to one of two landing sites: exploration.esa.int/mars/58904...
    Paper about ExoMars' autonomous driving: robotics.estec.esa.int/ASTRA/A...

    Note: while the Wikipedia entry says that there have been 7 rovers, one of these missions is the (failed) Beagle 2 mission which contained a mole, but this didn't have wheels, so technically there have only been 6 attempts to land a rover!

    To build this Rockwell Retro Encabulator, you'll need some pre-famulated Amulite, two Sperbing bearings, and a Panametric fan. Make sure the bearings are in line with the fan.

    How is carbon fiber allowed if they can't use organic materials? Afaik, carbon fiber composite materials are made of plastics/resins combined with woven carbon fiber, right? unless they are using literally just carbon fiber, which I've never heard of but I'd be curious what uses you could make of it.

    6:35 - am I right in saying that its not 1/3 the mass but 1/3 the weight?

    • @benfuller9009
      @benfuller9009 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You're probably thinking that a certain object on Mars would weigh 1/3 of the same object on Earth, which is true. However, the point here is that a prototype rover on Earth is constructed with 1/3 the mass so that the weight on Earth is 1/3 of the full rover, therefore simulating the correct-ish weight as the full rover would have on Mars.

    • @SimonClark
      @SimonClark  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the rover on Earth has 1/3 the mass. Weight = mass*g - to approximate the correct weight on Mars (where g is 1/3 that of g_Earth) the mass is only 1/3 that of the final rover.

    • @dl4350
      @dl4350 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      so this prototype rover is only 1/3 the mass of the one going to Mars, in order to simulate the gravitational conditions of Mars? I think.

    Why dont they use the static charge from the dust storms and a few decent sized capacitors to charge their batteries while the rover is cut off from solar power?

    • @quantumbits
      @quantumbits 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why don't we just use thunderstorms to generate electricity? Work on that.

    • @quantumbits

      Why don't we just use thunderstorms to generate electricity? Work on that.

    • @Ender.wigginn
      @Ender.wigginn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@quantumbits not talking about the static charge built up between dust particles, but rather the charge dispersed on the skin of the rover as dust particles hit and move over it. If you've ever sand blasted a conductive material, you will understand what I mean and the magnitudes I am describing.
