    Thanks Vessi! 👟 Click here www.vessi.com/2H1S and use our code '2H1S' to get $25 off of your shoes. Clunky boots be gone--keep your feet dry and cozy with a pair of Vessi's light-as-clouds sneakers :)

      Oh, I wanted to tell you I told my daughter about these. She moved from here in the desert to snow country, and didn’t have the right kind of shoes at all! She bought some Vessi shoes with Christmas money from her grandma and LOVES THEM!! Thanks for the recommendation!

    I never thought about how challenging it would be to make and keep friends as an expat. That’s kind of sad. Adds a whole new layer to living abroad long term. On the other hand, as an introvert, my circle is really small anyway. My best friend is also my husband so guess I’m kind of in the same boat living in my own country. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂🤪

    • @2hearts1seoul
      @2hearts1seoul  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It’s probably a bit easier on me (Sarah), since I’m an introvert myself 😅 But yes, the ‘friends always leaving’ but it is a quite a difficult challenge as an expat.

    It's so sad when a friendship has an expiration date. I remember when I made friends with exchange students at uni and then after the year was over, they all moved back to their countries. It was weird getting attached to people knowing that they will leave in a year and I'll probably never see them again. I hope your friend liked the socks! Those 한옥 ones were so adorable 😭

    When I moved to Japan, my intention was to stay there long-term and knew that making other friends with other foreigners would be rough. I tried to make local friends as much as I could, but then it backfired when I had to leave due to health reasons. I couldn't have known, of course. I only spent two years there, but I really went all-in on making my life there permanent. I miss all my Japanese friends so much, and have lost touch with almost all of them by now.
    The sad thing is that even 5-6 years back in my home country, I still hesitate to make new friends here because I dream of giving Japan another shot some day. If I know I'm going to leave again, why set myself up for more heartbreak? It's just a mental block, but I relate so much to Sarah's reservations in terms of making new friends.
    Making and losing friends is just part of life, though. People grow apart even without physically moving anywhere. And who knows, becoming close to someone who always planned to leave might influence them to stay longer. Maybe not forever, but long enough to make a meaningful difference.

      I am in the military and i travel and live in different countries since 2002. It’s always very difficult to leave friends and at this point of my life…i only keep one or two close friends unless i am going to settle down in one place for good. It’s very sad for my family especially my children. So i can totally relate.

    If I lived in Korea I would totally put in a friend application! But even living where I’ve grown up friends tend to come and go just with various life situations or growing apart. I mourn the loss of friends throughout my life too. Making friends in general is just hard and my circle has become quite small. I guess that’s what happens as you get to your mid 30s.

    Hi Sarah! I recognize the friend situation. Since primary school I had to change classes or schools almost every two years and honestly that messed me up with friend making. I had the same thoughts as you. It really sucks. But one day my mom said this: "friends are for seasons". Most of the time they don't last, but you'll meet the right people at the right time. It doesn't change how much the situation sucks, but somehow her comment gave me a bit of comfort. Changing friends often also helped me to grow since I'm normally shy about changing and growing when people that I know have a very set idea of who I am. But anyways, I hope it gives even a little bit of comfort like it did to me. Stay strong!! Making new friends is worth it even if they're your friends for a short time!

    Hi Sarah! Hi Kyuho!!
    Happy Lunar New Year to you both! I absolutely LOVE family time! I especially love how Kyuho’s mama wrote ‘MOM,’ on your card, Sarah. That is so meaningful and so touching! I love to see all of the special dishes that you get to share. Both sets of parents are amazing!
    The sock shop that you visited was very cool. I’m so glad that you found a nice gift for your friend. Best of luck to Lowell on his return trip to Canada. OMGEEE! Thank you for showing the location where you both met! I remember the video of when you first met-that was quite a while ago! Can you say ‘Katusa!’ 😉 I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos throughout the years, and continue to look forward to your weekly vlogs! This is probably not the same since its still in the same country but my h.s. bff is in another state. Even though we don't see eachother on a normal/regular basis like we use to, when we meet it is like we never left eachother. We just picked up where we left off. A saying I recently seen is: Friends are like stars, even though you don't always see them, they are always there.
    I do agree its hard to see them leave and lose that routine of picking up the phone and hanging out. Just because they move doesn't mean your friend ship ends so don't think of it as an expiration date but rather pending.

    I just keep in mind that few people choose to relocate to another country forever. Family is a big issue. I only had my father when I came here in '91 and lost him two years later.
    Keep your love alive and know that you have each other now, and that's what is most important.

    Happy Lunar New Year (a bit late to catching up on your vlogs)! I can relate to your friendship problems, so many of my friends have also moved, gotten married, or are having kids now😬. It's so hard to make new friends as an adult and it may be worse than trying to find a date, maybe there needs to be a friend app that can help connect people. Well, I hope you'll be able to continue your friendships even if the people aren't living in the same country as you anymore. I'm not sure what the TH-cam community is like in Korea but maybe you could try and reach out to other couples or vloggers in Korea to build a different friend group.

    I guess it is normal that friends and friendships come and go and we have to make much more efforts to meet the few true friends compared to our childhood when we went to the same school or lived in the same neighborhood as our friends. I feel you. If I lived in Korea permanently, I would try to make Korean friends but I understand that it would be tricky, too. Glad you have Kyuho!
    Even tho I live in my homecountry, I'm by myself in a big, anonymous city and my friends and family all live elsewhere. I didn't even make the effort to meet new people here because I never knew whether I will stay in this place or move again..hah...
    life is interesting.
    Best wishes from Germany~

      It’s definitely much harder to make friends as you get older-that’s so true. We’ve had plenty of friends leave Korea over the years-Canadians and Americans, international couples like us, and even our Korean couple friends 🥲 Sometimes I want to put in the effort to make friends, and some days I have the ‘why bother?’ mindset~

    Friends come and go. That's life. Especially if you have expat friends it would be only a matter of time before they leave. Try to enlarge your social circle with Korean friends or join expat social activity clubs where you can meet new expat friends.

    I totally understand how Sarah feels about friends leaving. 2 of my really close American friends left about 2 years ago. I miss them so much. It's hard emotionally. If u ever wanna meet for a tea or coffee, I live in Suwon but sometimes I go to Seoul and will be in Korea for a long long time (also married to a Korean man and we bought a house so we r locked in) haha be my friend :) i like cats and I'm Canadian too haha. It’s always so nice to see you guys hanging with or eating with your parents. I’m sorry that the friend situation is what it is for you guys. I understand how the older one gets, the harder it is to make new friends. It’s tough also to have a relationship that you put so much time, energy, emotions info building, only to have the friendship wane due to long distance. I hope that you’re able to keep in touch despite the distance though. Those socks were cool. Do they have that store in the US?

    My husband and I have been married for 38 years this year, and even though we still live in our native country, the US, we have found the same situation is true. People move in, we make friends, then they move on, or we move. After this many years, we count on each other for that permanence in friendship we crave. We do make friends with others, but with the understanding that those friendships come and go. But we are always there for each other.

  • @NadineJanzen6
    @NadineJanzen6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally understand about the friendship thing and not wanting to put the effort into connecting with people who don't have concrete plans to be in Korea long-term. It's definitely the hardest part of settling down here for sure. I have so many close girlfriends and relatives in Canada but I'm terrible at keeping in touch with people digitally so even though I know we will always be friends, I rarely connect with them aside from a brief coffee catch-up on the short, rare trips home. I feel bad sometimes because it puts too much pressure on my husband to be my sole relationship/emotional support source which isn't great either. Sadly not in Seoul or too into cats but I'm sure we could figure out some other things we have in common /if you're ever wanting/needing someone to chat with that understands/relates to some of what you are feeling in that regard let me know and we could figure out a Zoom hang or I do head to Seoul every once in awhile...I hope you guys have a great week and that the goodbye wasn't too hard. Thinking of you as that's never easy!

    Haha I kind of want to send you guys a friend application! I'm moving to Korea from Sweden in 10 days to live with my Boyfriend! I'm also low key sending him a bunch of tik tok's of cats just to make him also really want a cat! (I grew up with always having like 5 cats, so it would feel so empty without one!)
    But I feel you guys! I'm currently saying good bye to all my friends here whom I've been friends with for way over 10 years, and now I'm moving to the other side of the planet! But to look on the bright side is that we have so many different options to keep contacts with friends from all over the world! so it's not nearly as difficult as it was over 20 years ago!
