This guitar will hopefully help others see how easy it is to work on your own guitar over the coming weeks. Look out for Shielding, wiring, fender mute installation and the problematic bridge setup! So get subscribed and look out for these future videos!

End May 2022. I like your video because I do everything by hand as well. The ONLY electric sanding that is safe to do is at preliminary stage when removing original finish. It's good for the crude/rough work just prior to primer coat. And the WORST thing to do is use a sanding block at ANY time after the primer has been sprayed on. Those wood bodies have contours that we can't detect by eye. But a sanding block sure as H will locate them. Finger sanding follows those mild contours. I have guitars that I clearcoated and SKIPPED the orange peel removal steps. I just car polished them with orange peel LEFT ON and they look terrific. The orange peel is UNIFORM. It is NOT unsightly. It truly is NOT necessary to sand out the orange peel.
So after you applied the clear coat you just polished it? Did the orange peel go away or is it there but just looks good?
Thanks for sharing this… I found it encouraging as I am working on my first refinishing project that is giving me fits. Of course, I am just learning so it’s all good.
Looks well good! 👍
Cheers man!
Thanks for the Great Video! did you use paint and clear coats while ignoring the orange peel and after building the coats you sanded the orange peel? or did you recommend sanding the orange peel between coats?
After everything was done and cured. Have a video on it 🙂
Should I sand the paint before applying clear coat if I have Orange peel in the painted coats?
You can if you want, I don't tend to. Unless there is a drip or something I've really buggered up.
Question on the t cut. Can you tru oil over it to lock in the shine and color? Thank you great video
No. The shine stays you just need to buff finger marks of f to make it look new again.
Did you put a clear coat acrylic finish on before the buffing or was it just a paint finish?
Clear coat
I can't see the name of the black polisher and where do we buy it ?
Will put a link in the description. Sorry about that.
Great video, just have one question though How long should I wait before I sand it after repainting?
Leave it a month to be safe
Long winded and dull
You sound just like my mother
@@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos um, ok.🥱
A massive thank you goes to you for your honesty and showing what happens when you use too much water when wet sanding or not being careful enough you helped me stop destroying my first guitar build and probably a lot more like me with there first build
Cheers 🥂 for that bud 👍🥇
No worries! Thank you.
that was a pretty serious orange peel... it looked just like the black racebike I painted once!
well done with the polishing, it is labour that requires patience
Beautiful work man, even more impressive now that I see you did it all by hand!
Haha cheers. I am a true luddite!
Great video. I think I've worked out my problem..... I'm not leaving it long enough to cure and I'm not sanding enough before polishing
Ah amazing! Thank you and glad it was of some help. Sorry I've created more work for you though!
23:08 when the gangstar step your guitar after finished lol
Thanks for your in depth video series! It's super informative and gives me horrible ideas for what to do with some of my instruments.
I was wondering if there is a different technique for finishing guitars with two (colour) layers of nitro? Say, have the black wear through to something like Fiesta Red or Shell Pink. Would the layers just melt together? It's not absolutely necessary but I'm still curious, haha.
Thanks again!
Thanks! No just let the first layer dry properly then shoot the next colour. Good luck!
That's insane how good of a detail job you did 😩
Cheers!
I wish I would have seen this video prior to attempting this because I ruined one of two guitars by submerging it in water while sanding it 😭 it's split in at least five places on the body. So yeah, that is a real thing ☹️🥺😭
@@OfAbstract yikes ! Sorry to hear that
Did you spray clear coat on top of the colour before the sanding or did you do that after the process? Or just leave it after the buffing/ polish? Thanks great video mate
Yes, clear coat after colour then the sanding buffing. Cheers
dont vote tory yes laaa
I’ve seen guys use baby oil to wet sand. So if it does seep into holes it doesn’t split the finish
Good idea cheers!
hell yeah thanks for the video
With regards to your spray jobs is it just base coat or clear lacquer as well?
Ryan
Colour coat and clear coat. I have a video on it. Cheers
hi mate sick video, just wondering if the red t cut will be fine for a fiesta red finish? as in will it affect the shade at all? cheers
If you mean the standard t cut. It should be ok. You can get a version like mine in red from Halfords that I've used before and makes life easier. But if you already have the normal t cut maybe try some under the pickguard first to make sure it's OK?
@@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos cheers for the reply man, I was talking about the actual red colour t cut, just wondering if it actually alters the original fiesta red colour in any way, but i assume it doesn't work like that.
@@jrc96 no shouldn't do. I have a fiesta red guitar that I used it on and it was fine. But yeah use under the guard first to make sure. Best of luck
@@DestroyingAmpsGearDemos cheers man! fiesta red over 3 tone sunburst nitro, hope i don't massacre it 😂
I've been looking for this for a long time. Thanks for the detailed information.
No worries! Hope it helps
Can’t go wrong with a bit of T-cut 👌
It's the dogs!
using vaseline to plug up the screw holes works well but Im not sure about the tuner holes
Good shout!
Candle wax as well, double bonus for lubricating the screws to wood contact.
What kind of water solution did you use to soak the sand paper?
Hey, it's just warm water and washing up liquid (dish soap). Cheers!
Are you sanding the paint or the clear coat
Clear
That's EXACTLY the content i needed, thx so much!
Sweet! Cheers x
Looks great, mate!
Cheers buddy x
I think black is one of most difficult to get glossy without cloudy or hazy. Btw what wax do you use?
Great Video!!! Was the orange peel already in the color coat or did it only appear after applying the clear coat?
My guitar looks basically the same as yours before the treatment but the orange peel / structure was already in the color coat… I already applied 2 coats of clear coz I had a hard time deciding if I should sand the color coat or not. So I just continued and your video gives me hope that it will look good when I do sand and polish only on the clear
Howd you end up handling it?
Do you need to sand the color coat before you apply clear coat?
No not with Nitro as it all melts together. But you would need to sand out any imperfections like a drip.
thank you! Also another question. When the color dries does it look smooth evenly or do some areas are a little cloudy than other spots?
Thank you so much for the reply. In the process of refinishing my guitar but have used dupli color spray cans as suggested in one videos ive watched
@@12Jsilva no worries buddy. Thanks for the sub. Hope it works out. Cheers
It should be pretty even. By cloudy do you mean like milky? If so that could be moisture trapped in finish. If it was nitro I would spray a little more which should clear it.
cool cat !
Thank you x
I cannot thank you enough. Thanks to your genrously assistive guidance in no small part, I was able to do a very nice job on my Strat.I was somewhat horrified when the dull happened, but shure enough, with a nice buff of compound, it came back almost like magic! Finished with a wax buff and it is so so good, although the primer/ undercaot was already laid down professionally. Cheers mate from Texas USA!
Amazing! Thanks so much x
