Best villain in YuGiOh hands down. That said, I always wondered about this, as it's never truly elaborated on. Yami Marik had to be something more than just an alternate personality that Marik created. Yes, it IS an alternate personality, but the hair....the golden eye *constantly* on his forehead...and the face ghosts... I think the face ghost is whatever dark energy that created him wafting off him. If you also notice...the more it happens, the more his face disfigured and grows the veins.

I feel like he probably started off as a split personality, or just Marik losing his shit enough to detach and become violent and enjoy it, but the Millennium Item stamp on his forehead makes me believe that the Millennium Rod is what made Yami Marik into a truly separate entity. If memory serves, the Millennium Items were cast from gold that had the blood and bones of an entire village of 100 murdered nomads and outcasts dissolved into it. I don't remember if Zorc's influence only overtook Bakura and the Millennium Ring because of Bakura's anger over his village being massacred, or if all the Millennium Items wound up affected, but seeing that everyone with the Millennium Eye wound up being corrupted and even Yami Yugi was a psycho early on makes me think that all of the Millennium Items can either create or magnify evil intentions. So, the day Marik saw his father beating Odion while being in the same room as the Millennium Rod is probably when Marik got the angriest and wanted to see his father suffer; cue the residual angry spirit energy in the Rod latching onto Marik's anger and taking over his body for a bit. Then Marik spent years repressing that shit, which any psychiatrist can tell you is the easiest way to create a ticking time bomb that'll eventually go off; years of pent-up bitterness and rage coupled with the Millennium Rod's dark magic is probably what made Yami Marik strong enough to become 'real' and kick the actual Marik's ghost out of his body.
I love Yami Marik too. Because of the way he was created (hate and anger), he’s an incomplete being. As far as you're statement about Yami Marik's nature, in some cases, he acts as if he's an ancient being like Yami Yugi and Yami Bakura. He can easily access the Millennium Items and utilize the Egyptian God cards (thought his heritage may have helped with that).

Nope. But what you should know is that each Yami also voices the host they reside in. Which is honestly a cool detail to think about in how a single voice actor has to convey being a much weaker variation or a character to being stronger or more sadistic in another while also having to keep the voices close enough to say that the characters are one in the same.
You guys would love the manga then! It's even more dark and crazy there! (And actually gruesome too) The anime had to tone down Yugioh because it's actually a horror manga series. 😮
