I actually loved that DLC, tons of fun... But maybe it was because I smuggled my weapons and all my ammo, plus a companion with me... =b I turned a hard survival game into a mass murdering one. What I ended up using most was the Lazer RCW and the Gobi Campaign Scout Sniper Rifle.
Good analysis, the Ghosts are probably the most horrifying mutants in the series when you realize how horribly they must have warped in those suits. They don't eat or sleep, explode in showers of pressurized gas and...stuff when their limbs get torn off, and move in a manner which suggests they either no long have a skeleton as we know it or have literally melded into the suits. Honestly, I'm inclined to think they're basically organic soup and gas in the suit, their bodies somehow having adapted to become Cloud-filtering organisms. The movement of fluids inside would be a great explanation for their "reanimation"- they don't have vital organs anymore, just series of bladders/porous tissue that process the cloud all throughout their body. All that remains is the spinal column and brain, as they go down permanently when their backs are broken or get their head blown off. Going by the remains you give Dog, they still seem to have red muscle tissue, though it could have been altered into bladder organs to store and process the cloud. And they do- sort of- talk, or rather vocalize. Listen closely to their audio files and you can hear them scream and wheeze through the gas mask filter. Whether they're doing this through their mouth or tissue fused into the gas mask's filtration system (like snork's noses) is probably best to not think about. I'd guess they probably sense things through touch and smell, primarily.
Another good analysis. Curiously though, they don't take extra damage from headshots, so I'm also inclined to add that they have a more decentralized nervous system.
An interesting thing to note however is that they never truly die unless their heads are destroyed. The body will keep breathing even if you blow all their limbs off.
Yeah, they are utterly fucking horrifying if you stop and think a bit logically how their biology works. There's mutation and then there's *Mutation*. The Master himself would look at those things and *"What unholy - UNHOLY! - abomination is this?"* And wanna know the clincher? We have no idea how sentient and conscious they are under those gasmasks. At the very least, they seem to be intelligent at some level, being able to spring traps, fight in groups, make and use tools, etc. So, at least as smart/sentient as the Marked Men. Worst case... they are just as sentient as you and I, possibly even suffering forever under those suits, and attack on sight because, being unable to speak, they have spent the last two hundred years being shot by people.
Eyeballs are extremely sensitive to pressure changes. Even small amounts can cause a visual distortion. Pushing on your eyes lets you see stars. The pressure in the suits either destroyed the eyes, or caused a severe visual distortion.
I want to see what they look like without the suits. Also, their eyes probably exploded from pressure. Their gas could possibly be from their decomposing.
I don't think there's anything left of the human that was inside that suit. It's almost like it's a sentient collection of gas bubbles creating massive internal pressure for the purposes of locomotion, with removing a limb equalising pressure and thus "killing" the creature. Their hearing skill could be related to vibrations in the air, which also explains their abysmal Perception by them not actually seeing in the conventional sense.
@@naitor2594 You're not wrong, but considering how they don't seem to have any red coloration to them, it implies that there's no Hemoglobin in any of the liquid present thus could be something that isn't actually blood anymore. Considering how there's not some continuous stream of liquid or organs spilling out after you rupture one, this implies that if there is anything left that's human, it's in the minority of that suit's interior. True, I didn't consider that there is certainly _something_ physical inside that suit, but I think my gas theory still largely applies.
Isn't there a terminal entry somewhere that talks about how a guy died inside one of the suits, but because the suit has the trama override thing, the suit kept the body moving and it attacked people? I guess I just always assumed that the people inside the suits were all dead, and that the "ghost people" were just dead bodies being controlled by the suits. which is why the clouds didn't bother them, and why you had to dismember them in order for them to stay dead..... You're basically fighting a dead body.

thenthapple No big deal, cant expect you to find EVERY single obscure entry there is to find in an area so big and dense. Might be something worth looking for though if you ever have the time or opportunity
I never did understand why people hate Dead Money so much, I absolutely loved it. Though after you figure out that to kill ghost people all you have to do is destroy a limb they become pretty easy so it would be cool to make them have stronger limbs. But anyway I thought Dead Money was a cool twist on Fallout. The inclusion of the cloud and speakers requires more tactical thinking to survive, because health and ammo are a very precious resource (more than normal) you have to think ahead so you don't run out in the middle of the cloud. So mostly it included a need to actually think about the situation which I felt Fallout NV lacked for the most part. It mostly seems like people were thrown off by the need to think when they had been used to the more 'run and gun' mentality that I found Fallout to have.
+Chunky Mustard If you think about it, it's the most challenging one in that you don't get to use all the weapons and such you accumulated over the course of the game. Sure, in Honest Hearts you're at a 100lbs limit, but stimpacks and meds along with ammo don't count against it unless in Hardcore mode. and the other two let you keep all of your gear. I think that's why it gets flak; it bothers to actually challenge you.

I freaking LOVED this addon and the whole atmosphere it created! The whole dark, abandoned city filled with these undying monstrosities was my favorite experience in all of fallout! Also, the shit hearing/vision might be explained by some of the pockets of pressurized gas forming inside the sensory organs of the ghost person, destroying them from the inside.
Same w/ when they throw spears at you even if you are above them. I was running back from triggering the gala the other day and two spear throwers spawned next to each other so I just started jumping erratically to try and confuse them but both managed to land perfect crit shots on me.
Thanks for the description of them. They're origin, anatomy, and combat are mysterious. They're my favorite enemies to fight. Such a sad, lonely, remote, scary ghost town. I want to see ghost people fight raiders and deathclaws.
i know its 5 years late, but the ghost people were the workers of sierra madre. Apparently the red cloud were sent by big MT as part of the deal of big MT scientists helping sinclair with technology. The red cloud were experimental, was hidden below sierra madre. However, there was several leak. So the big MT also sent the hazmat suit, which is a prototype. Given to the workers of Sierra madre to fix the source of the red cloud. However, apparently they are trapped inside the hazmat suit, as the red cloud melts the valve / equipment of hazmat suit, making it hard/impossible to pulled off. So the workers were brought towards kitchen and have their suit to be cut open with cosmic knife. I think the one that we see here in Sierra madre were probably the workers that was still there, that havent get to go home when the bomb fell. And since the red cloud start leaking from the bottom of Sierra madre, they start using the hazmat suit. Given time, they die inside the suit and the body was reanimated by red cloud. The red cloud were toxin AFAIK
This is something I would like to see as well and it seems you're the first person to bring it up. There has to be more behind the annexation of Canada by the US and also what were the sequence of events that led to the Alaskan pipeline sabotage. Perhap we can also understand through that how the T-51 power armors came into service.
***** Ronto (actually Toronto) is mentioned in the pit but not much, there are a few canadians in fallout (marge lebarge in fallout 2), and at least one random encounter in fallout tactics and in (bethesdas) FO3 there was a 'hockey gang" that was a parody of canadian hockey players
Ah, "Dead Money.." one of my favorite, and most hated, Fallout DLC's ever. Loved the story and game play, it forced me out of my regular play style, and it was authentically creepy. Pretty much all the reasons I hated it, too..
I don't hate but what you say is true, it forces you out of your normal gameplay since it strips you of your gear and forces you to survive with whatever little you have Needless to say, I loved this dlc

Daniel Whittaker A bit of advice is don't use the .357 on the ghost people. My suggestion is you the bear trap fist on them saving the .308 for big groups and .357 for the speakers.

I think the idea with their vision is that the night vision and ghost sight are what boosts their perception up to "almost 0". They are basically blind otherwise.
I love this DLC. It's probably the best one. I feel the only gripe some people have on this DLC is the challenge, ghost, not being able to grab all the gold bars. Which I understand. You're entitled to your opinions, it's good you have them. But what I LOVE about this DLC - Is that survival challenge that you don't get in new vegas vanilla. - THE STORY. It targets a subject fallout has with its wastrel's. As well a lovely story that explains some pre-war history too, it's lore including a nice fallout trope - mans greed in general.
A bit late, but the whole point of Dead Money that's constantly brought up from beginning to end is the idea of letting go. All the main characters do it in their own way, and so do we as players. We can't take every gold bar, we have to let go of our greed, the playstyle is vastly different, we have to let go of what we think of as the normal playstyle; you can over-analyze it, but it all holds up throughout. Hence, sadly, why most people have gripes with it; because they didn't let go.
The really creepy part is how we never see them outside of their suits. They could look like anything under all that. Also, decapitation kills them just fine and seems easier than ripping off limbs. Not sure why everyone tries to Dead Space them when a headshot is so likely to pop an enemies skull in this game.
I always like to theorize like they are living gel inside the suits.... because they don't take extra headshot damage... move in a very fluid shamble-like matter... have very faint squishy sounding footsteps and once the suit is ripped open the gel dies from the oxygen exposed the cloud mutated their whole body into an organic gel and the suits act like a sort of exoskeleton keeping it all together. similar to those big daddys from bioshock. I also love how the dlc strips you of all weapons, armor and stuff and dumps you in against them. I honestly would of have much more of them and have them resurrect seconds after getting knocked down.
I played dead money at night, upstairs in my brothers haunted two story house. It was very bad when I heard things like a little child's voice outside the room, when there were no children in the house to begin with, I also heard a loud bang like something getting knocked over. And the game itself was creeping me out with the ambient noises you hear in the Villa, like ghosts clicking and making noises and the creepy ambient soundtrack of the Villa streets. I made the perfect decision to go speak to God/Dog and it just made things even creepier. I kept playing til I feel asleep, and was happy when I woke up the morning, seeing sunlight and smelling breakfast from downstairs.

I was always led to believe the reason the suits move is because they have the same internals as the spacesuits from Big Empty (remember, the suits that carried 'dead people' in them) and the reason you had to take a limb was either because it broke the electrical circuit or, and this is what I believe due to what I remember reading in big empties terminals, a person had to be present in the suit for the electronics to function and maybe losing a limb means since it loses some shaping of a person it is no longer recognised as a human and thus stops functioning.
I think the reason for why they keep getting up again may have to do with the fact that tightness around parts of the body increases bloodflow to that area, that and the radiation could largely play into their "undying".

+OuroborosChoked Lonely Road was arguably as good, the only one that made me feel "eh" over it was Honest Hearts and the sole reason of it was the lack of build up to anything. In this, it's almost like a survival horror, LR was a semi-long build up to a confrontation between two couriers from two sides of the colorado while Nuclear Armageddon 2.0 happening at stake. OWB was just a ridiculous comedy fest that was entertaining. The story telling in NV shows a stark difference when compared to FO3 and FO4.
i love how little explanation there is for the ghost people. like so many other fallout monsters have tons of lore behind them and theres always a "scientific" explanation for how they work that fits with the games' internal logic. but for the ghost people its straight up just "toxic gas came out of nowhere, nobody knows what the stuff is, and these guys in hazmat suits all turned into undead creeps *somehow*" like the total lack of explanation in a world thats otherwise so dense with lore makes them soo much more creepy
When i first heard of them i am thinking about stalkers who cover their faces watching you and later ambushes you but when i see them, the suit is right but not the way they are as i thought .

Ach I did actually aye, I didn't really enjoy the collar mechanic tbh; was just annoying by the end of it all as well as the cloud glitch, thing. But thank god for mods haha Aye the story was great; brilliant piece of DLC, would go back and do it again.
Connor Champion I am surprised just how much difficult these DLC's are in comparrison to Fallout 3's DLC. I mean, sure, Fallout 3 had some challenging moments, but nothing that made me angry. Esepcially since in FO:3 the V.A.T. System was way too over powered and most people just used that to kill enemies for the most part.
It was, indeed. I feel they've done it better in Fallout: New Vegas, however. I don't feel it's it's as much of a crutch as it was in Fallout 3. Though, some could claim they made VATS way too under powered in New Vegas, but I think they tuned it just right so you would have to rely on both.

+millenniumdragn The timer on the bomb collar when nearing speakers/radios is literally the only gameplay element in Fallout that has ever legitimately pissed me off... Usually when I die I know it's because I fucked up and it's funny anyway. Not the bomb collars. And having to leave so much gold in the vault left a bad taste in my mouth. I was only able to carry 7 ingots (with Strength 9) and while 70000 caps is a nice reward I just felt teased - even though this was probably intentional due to the story behind the Sierra Madre. On the other side of the coin Lonesome Road had everything I love about Fallout - lots of exploration, loot, and mutants to kill. There wasn't a big "cap" reward but it gave you some of the best equipment in the game, not to mention the Courier's Armor featured on the game case.

If anyone plays Mass Effect, these guys remind me of Quarians. I know it isn't the same but severing a limb kills them the same as a breach in the suit kills a Quarian. Their suits have already been breached, I know, since they're mutated and such but still..
If you take the claw you get from the divide you can make the fist of rawr or whatever it's called, and basically turn on easy mode while you shred your way through mountains of ghosties.

What i meant (but was too lazy to type) was that when you kill the deathclaw named Rawr in the divide, and you search his corpse, you find a unique deathclaw hand called rawrs talon. This is a crafting material to make the only deathclaw gauntlet in the game; fist of rawr. It also is counted as a quest item, meaning it cannot be removed from the players inventory. So, if you keep the claw with you and enter the dead money dlc you will be able to craft the fist of rawr while inside the dlc, giving an unarmed character an enormous advantage. Hope i cleared that up for ya 😊

Having a high repair skill and the jury rig perk as well as high medicine and melee really helped me with this DLC.

Playing this DLC on Hardcore Mode was honestly one of the best gaming experiences I ever had playing any of the Fallout games.

I freaking LOVED this addon and the whole atmosphere it created! The whole dark, abandoned city filled with these undying monstrosities was my favorite experience in all of fallout!
Also, the shit hearing/vision might be explained by some of the pockets of pressurized gas forming inside the sensory organs of the ghost person, destroying them from the inside.
The accuracy with which they can hit with a firebomb , makes me question the fact that they cannot see anything.
Same w/ when they throw spears at you even if you are above them. I was running back from triggering the gala the other day and two spear throwers spawned next to each other so I just started jumping erratically to try and confuse them but both managed to land perfect crit shots on me.
Thanks for the description of them. They're origin, anatomy, and combat are mysterious. They're my favorite enemies to fight. Such a sad, lonely, remote, scary ghost town.

i know its 5 years late, but the ghost people were the workers of sierra madre. Apparently the red cloud were sent by big MT as part of the deal of big MT scientists helping sinclair with technology. The red cloud were experimental, was hidden below sierra madre. However, there was several leak. So the big MT also sent the hazmat suit, which is a prototype. Given to the workers of Sierra madre to fix the source of the red cloud. However, apparently they are trapped inside the hazmat suit, as the red cloud melts the valve / equipment of hazmat suit, making it hard/impossible to pulled off. So the workers were brought towards kitchen and have their suit to be cut open with cosmic knife. I think the one that we see here in Sierra madre were probably the workers that was still there, that havent get to go home when the bomb fell. And since the red cloud start leaking from the bottom of Sierra madre, they start using the hazmat suit. Given time, they die inside the suit and the body was reanimated by red cloud. The red cloud were toxin AFAIK
I want to know more about fallouts supposed Canadian rebellion, and Canada as a whole.
This is something I would like to see as well and it seems you're the first person to bring it up. There has to be more behind the annexation of Canada by the US and also what were the sequence of events that led to the Alaskan pipeline sabotage.
Perhap we can also understand through that how the T-51 power armors came into service.
Apparently, to my knowledge. There were vaults built around Michigan, in the Ontario vicinity. There's clearly lore and life in Canada.

Ah, "Dead Money.." one of my favorite, and most hated, Fallout DLC's ever. Loved the story and game play, it forced me out of my regular play style, and it was authentically creepy. Pretty much all the reasons I hated it, too..
***** It's best to go into it with Jury Rigging, junk rounds and scrounger, I've learned.
I just play it on PC now, so, with the power of mods...
I don't hate but what you say is true, it forces you out of your normal gameplay since it strips you of your gear and forces you to survive with whatever little you have

Daniel Whittaker A bit of advice is don't use the .357 on the ghost people. My suggestion is you the bear trap fist on them saving the .308 for big groups and .357 for the speakers.
Razzeil I actually found I could just use the 9mm on the speakers to save the rest for these guys. Killed the boss with a 357.
Daniel Whittaker If you have the recipe make a hot knife out of the cosmic knife then make a spear. It works great for de limbing.

If the cloud is corrosive (and i'm pretty sure it is), that would explain why they can't see, because the gas dissolved their eyes
I think the idea with their vision is that the night vision and ghost sight are what boosts their perception up to "almost 0". They are basically blind otherwise.
I love this DLC. It's probably the best one.
I feel the only gripe some people have on this DLC is the challenge, ghost, not being able to grab all the gold bars. Which I understand. You're entitled to your opinions, it's good you have them.
But what I LOVE about this DLC
- Is that survival challenge that you don't get in new vegas vanilla.
- THE STORY. It targets a subject fallout has with its wastrel's. As well a lovely story that explains some pre-war history too, it's lore including a nice fallout trope - mans greed in general.
A bit late, but the whole point of Dead Money that's constantly brought up from beginning to end is the idea of letting go. All the main characters do it in their own way, and so do we as players. We can't take every gold bar, we have to let go of our greed, the playstyle is vastly different, we have to let go of what we think of as the normal playstyle; you can over-analyze it, but it all holds up throughout. Hence, sadly, why most people have gripes with it; because they didn't let go.

I only took 1 gold bar when I found it. I was set for life after selling it for about 10000 caps.
I know I’m late has hell. But. You can take all gold bars and your gear. I did it.
The really creepy part is how we never see them outside of their suits. They could look like anything under all that.
Also, decapitation kills them just fine and seems easier than ripping off limbs. Not sure why everyone tries to Dead Space them when a headshot is so likely to pop an enemies skull in this game.

and once the suit is ripped open the gel dies from the oxygen exposed
the cloud mutated their whole body into an organic gel and the suits act like a sort of exoskeleton keeping it all together.
similar to those big daddys from bioshock.
I also love how the dlc strips you of all weapons, armor and stuff and dumps you in against them.
I honestly would of have much more of them and have them resurrect seconds after getting knocked down.
I played dead money at night, upstairs in my brothers haunted two story house. It was very bad when I heard things like a little child's voice outside the room, when there were no children in the house to begin with, I also heard a loud bang like something getting knocked over. And the game itself was creeping me out with the ambient noises you hear in the Villa, like ghosts clicking and making noises and the creepy ambient soundtrack of the Villa streets. I made the perfect decision to go speak to God/Dog and it just made things even creepier. I kept playing til I feel asleep, and was happy when I woke up the morning, seeing sunlight and smelling breakfast from downstairs.

I was always led to believe the reason the suits move is because they have the same internals as the spacesuits from Big Empty (remember, the suits that carried 'dead people' in them) and the reason you had to take a limb was either because it broke the electrical circuit or, and this is what I believe due to what I remember reading in big empties terminals, a person had to be present in the suit for the electronics to function and maybe losing a limb means since it loses some shaping of a person it is no longer recognised as a human and thus stops functioning.

I think the reason for why they keep getting up again may have to do with the fact that tightness around parts of the body increases bloodflow to that area, that and the radiation could largely play into their "undying".
Those things still make me wanna cry whenever I hear their breathing, especially in the gala event!

+OuroborosChoked Lonely Road was arguably as good, the only one that made me feel "eh" over it was Honest Hearts and the sole reason of it was the lack of build up to anything. In this, it's almost like a survival horror, LR was a semi-long build up to a confrontation between two couriers from two sides of the colorado while Nuclear Armageddon 2.0 happening at stake. OWB was just a ridiculous comedy fest that was entertaining. The story telling in NV shows a stark difference when compared to FO3 and FO4.
i love how little explanation there is for the ghost people. like so many other fallout monsters have tons of lore behind them and theres always a "scientific" explanation for how they work that fits with the games' internal logic.
but for the ghost people its straight up just "toxic gas came out of nowhere, nobody knows what the stuff is, and these guys in hazmat suits all turned into undead creeps *somehow*"
like the total lack of explanation in a world thats otherwise so dense with lore makes them soo much more creepy

Connor Champion I am surprised just how much difficult these DLC's are in comparrison to Fallout 3's DLC. I mean, sure, Fallout 3 had some challenging moments, but nothing that made me angry. Esepcially since in FO:3 the V.A.T. System was way too over powered and most people just used that to kill enemies for the most part.

It was, indeed. I feel they've done it better in Fallout: New Vegas, however. I don't feel it's it's as much of a crutch as it was in Fallout 3. Though, some could claim they made VATS way too under powered in New Vegas, but I think they tuned it just right so you would have to rely on both.
Came back years later. I watched a lot of your videos years ago despite having never played Fallout New Vegas. Just finished Dead Money a couple days ago. Came back to this old gem to enjoy it again. Miss your content, N.

+millenniumdragn The timer on the bomb collar when nearing speakers/radios is literally the only gameplay element in Fallout that has ever legitimately pissed me off... Usually when I die I know it's because I fucked up and it's funny anyway. Not the bomb collars.
And having to leave so much gold in the vault left a bad taste in my mouth. I was only able to carry 7 ingots (with Strength 9) and while 70000 caps is a nice reward I just felt teased - even though this was probably intentional due to the story behind the Sierra Madre.
On the other side of the coin Lonesome Road had everything I love about Fallout - lots of exploration, loot, and mutants to kill. There wasn't a big "cap" reward but it gave you some of the best equipment in the game, not to mention the Courier's Armor featured on the game case.

If anyone plays Mass Effect, these guys remind me of Quarians. I know it isn't the same but severing a limb kills them the same as a breach in the suit kills a Quarian. Their suits have already been breached, I know, since they're mutated and such but still..

Well, technically you could call the Combat Rifle a BAR, but it can't be fully automatic and fire the .308 cartridge.

If you take the claw you get from the divide you can make the fist of rawr or whatever it's called, and basically turn on easy mode while you shred your way through mountains of ghosties.

Kris Pregler true. What i meant (but was too lazy to type) was that when you kill the deathclaw named Rawr in the divide, and you search his corpse, you find a unique deathclaw hand called rawrs talon. This is a crafting material to make the only deathclaw gauntlet in the game; fist of rawr. It also is counted as a quest item, meaning it cannot be removed from the players inventory. So, if you keep the claw with you and enter the dead money dlc you will be able to craft the fist of rawr while inside the dlc, giving an unarmed character an enormous advantage. Hope i cleared that up for ya 😊
