  • On this day in Tudor history, 20th December 1541, a “very sickly” Agnes Tilney, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, begged King Henry VIII for forgiveness.
The dowager duchess had been arrested and taken to the Tower accused of misprision of treason for hiding her stepgranddaughter Catherine Howard's past relationship with Francis Dereham.
In today's talk, Claire Ridgway, author of "On This Day in Tudor History", shares what the dowager duchess wrote to the king and also what happened to this sickly woman.

Whew! That's a relief! I thought I was going to hear of another terrifying beheading of a frail elderly lady. She must have been absolutely petrified. The loss of her possessions would probably be insignificant after her ordeal? I spotted adorable teasel in her lilac nappy... so sweet. 🐈🐕🔔Thank you Claire.

@@TheAjjupiter So very true. My therapist laughed at mine and said it was perfect for a history nut like me (he didn't use the word nut; that's just how i self-identify lol). But "Sorry to leave you on such a gloomy note" is much more multi-purpose, imo. A little self-aware in my case, probably, but wonderful and hysterical. Clarie's probably in bed at this hour, but hopefully she'll see this when she checks her morning email and get some ideas from it ;)

There was no concrete evidence, at this point the accused man mysteriously start becoming her staff. That was plausible plus it became believable when she stop being interesting to him. He was madly in love as a newly wed but after being with her and dealing with a child. Plus a year long marriage with no children being made yet. That what able to make someone to come forward. Like they said when henry blow hot it's passionate but when he's pissed, no going back. It can be something small and he try to break you.

I think hiding a queen’s “naughty” past was not a treasonable crime until Queen Kathryn was already under arrest. It was then enacted and applied retroactively. Premarital affairs didn’t affect succession; but they could have been grounds for annulment. I think at the beginning, when Henry took everyone by surprise by casting a fancy to Kathryn, (who could’ve imagined?), there wasn’t much incentive to speak up. Henry was happy, and it was profitable to all (except Cromwell).

What a strange system to live in. At least Hery let the Dowager Duchess out of the Tower but Henry was a world class thief as far as I can see. Thank you Clare. I look forward to you ever day. That's what I was beginning to wonder myself if the money had anything to do with her escaping the axeman! Seems the only thing Henry loved more than woman was money and lots of it! I just don't understand how a man can look at an old lady in such a state of terror for something she didn't really know would ever be of any significance! Plus even if she would have told he still would have taken his wrath out on someone for breaking his poor old evil heart! But sometimes I begin to wonder that if he moved heaven and Earth to get to Anne Boleyn, if he would have let her indiscretions slide and have them covered up had she said something and if he lived her enough!? But then again this poor girl had zero chance from the beginning. She was so much younger than him and her naivety played a major part in her downfall. She was just a baby. With today's info and knowing about teenage brains we know that her decision making areas were not fully matured, and she probably just did what she was told to do. I know it wasn't as scandalous as it is now for an old fart to marry a teen, but still he should have been advised better by his council than to become daddy to a little baby like that, because teens are unpredictable and can be brats at times. He should have gotten an annulment and just sent her to a nunnery and been done with her. He didn't have to have her blood spilled, but that's just my opinion. And the money definitely talked for her step-granny!! Sorry for the long comment. I just feel bad for all these people involved. They were damned if they did and damned if they didn't!!

I've always thought harry 8 was a monster, but the Norfolk clan must bear a lot of the blame, because they proceeded to thrust their daughter's, nieces and granddaughters into the kings orbit. (As did other noble families, but on a lesser scale). Now you have enlightened me to the fact of this grandmother : pleading with the king: do I have any sympathy for her: No! What's the old saying? " reap what you sew!" Thanks again Claire for these details. You historians are invaluable sources of information, I salute you all for doing the hard yards, trawling through dusty manuscripts/letters , whilst transcribing the almost indecipherable Tudor handwriting!
