It depends on what type of ship you serve on. BMs can expect to serve on cargo handling ships or amphibs handling landing craft. Sometimes they are in charge of ammo haming or damage control teams. They are busy folks. Good luck because tBMs have a big job whether they are on a carrier or a tug boat.

I wish I had been a Bosun mate in the Navy. My recruiter told me I didnt want to go to Deck Department, so I became an airdale instead. But again, I wish i had gone the seaman route instead now.

It depends a lot on what type of ship you get on. A BM can learn many skills such as handling landing craft or driving a forklift. They have many duties involved in handling cargo. Some of their jobs translate very well into civilian jobs. Plus you get many opporiunities for becoming a leader and manager. Good Luck because it is one tough job no matter where you go!

I came in as a BMSR, I feel your pain. I made BM3 just before I got out.

If you take pride in been a BM then good for you and more power to you , however my experience in deck department was absolutely horrendous. I could go into detail about what I went through when I was there but am not going to. I will say this much though, if you are thinking about joining I strongly suggest that you do a lot of research before talking to any recruiter. Be very sure of what exactly you are going to be doing right after boot camp. Don't let the recruiter bullshit you because if you end up in deck and you do not care to be a BM you are probably going to regret you ever joined.

I was in deck Div for 3 months when I was fresh out of boot. Ship was undergoing yard overhaul period. Hated every minute, didn't join to chip scrape grind old paint then red lead and grey paint. Glad to become an RD striker.

@@jimhoward1062 Good for you, I don't recall doing a single task while I was in deck that I actually enjoyed doing.

I'm thinking of becoming a Boatswain's Mate in the Australian Navy. Do you think this is a wise career path? Something that I can take pride in years from now?

I might be late but. Yes. You will take pride in it years later, Unless you absolutely despise the job...

Tattoo on a bosun pipe is beautiful, 10 minutes before taps, then taps, a beautiful sound.

You did not hang those lines up behind you right? You had your seaman do it at least three times before you actually figured out where you wanted them placed......FACT.
