    I am grateful to Trevor Noah for giving a longer more detailed interview of Mariska Hargitay's project, really listening and letting her string a few sentences together, uninterrupted. Now the interviewers seem to constantly interrupt and have the attention spans of guppies. Here we actually learned a very great deal about sexual abuse, law enforcement policies that do not respect victim rights (yet again), and the laxism about rapists that is really pervasive. And this is a worldwide problem, not just an American, sadly.

      Sometimes I wonder whether it takes someone who was forced to take a backseat in life for so long (growing up during Apartheid in africa as a mixed boy) to learn basic human qualities such as listening. This me-me-me-problem is also a structural thing!

      lawrence omang only because i understand why he is popular and because i watched jon stewart for 10 years and never did jon say something as scary as trevor did to me...my little brother is very young and i don't want all this hate and sin from the past punishing him when he is older when he is good person..everything i typed he said..its his fault he was so vague and said white people were never punished and as far left as i always was I've become scared of the hate i see in comment sections and on tv towards white people...that's not cool and I should be allowed to say it without being shadowbanned or otherwise. I am out of guilt for being white were born equal and its okay for me to say based off of what trevor in that video said that it was racist and against freedom of speech..not all words are great but the words we say on such a small scale between you and cops on the road shouldn't land you in jail for 3 years i don't care where you are thats all i said...why is there a list of words punishable by a sentence in jail because my skin color alone,because of actions of others in the past as if people that were black in the past never did horrible things..there's more to history than 500 years, much more.

      Whether this person has seen the show or not, the point he/she made is important and so very, very true. We need to use that money for much more important things. Such as clearing up this backlog of rape kitsch. I was one of the lucky ones. My rapist was caught the same day. And he plead guilty so I was not forced to confront him in court. Though at that time the sentence for sexual assault was ridiculously short, he received only 9 years and 3 of those was because he used a gun.

    This is so enraging!
    For a victim to go through this horrible horrific experience of the test and then.. nothing. Makes you think how many *don’t* even report it because they know nothing will happen.. definitely larger than what we’ve previously suspected.

    • @smallblueflower
      @smallblueflower 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      earth ocean one would think so, out of shame and trauma.. but when the victim knows that even if they collect the courage to report, nothing will happen.... I can only imagine how much worse things are in reality. If it’s not 1/3 women, Is it 1/2? Is 3/4?

    • @jaxvoice718
      @jaxvoice718 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This number (or should I say these numbers) are based on surveys and studies, not police reports, which definitely would underestimate the real number. The studies ask a representative part of the population and then extrapolate. These studies may not be completely reliable either. For some stigma or shame would make it hard to admit abuse or assault even to a researcher.

    • @maryrosekent8223
      @maryrosekent8223 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +jaxvoice: I remember when people first started talking publicly about girls who were raped by a family member (I think the word incest doesn’t adequately convey the horror of what the raped person goes through, so I never use it) I wanted to shut myself up in a closet somewhere and never come out. I was so ashamed about having been sexually assaulted by my stepfather that I lived in horror that people would find out and then hate me forever. It took at least a decade and a lot of therapy before I stopped being compelled to hide this from myself, and even longer before I could tell people I loved. So you’re spot-on when you say that stigma and shame is why so many do not come forward. The brutality of it never really goes away...you just have to find a way to make peace with yourself, to forgive yourself and-it you’re really lucky-come to see it was never your fault.

      Stereotypical J Cole Fan the only reason the child sexual abusers is because they were abused themselves and they re-enact the abuse on other children because in their mind they are trying to make sense of the abuse. So stop blaming kids. Blame the adult rapist. They know better from right and wrong and a child doesn't.

    • @noonebusiness2442

      Stereotypical J Cole Fan its ignorant to blame kids of sexual abuse on other kids,yes there are child abusers but always state why there are. The only reason there's child abusers is because of pedophiles and/or abusive family members that abuses them. No child does any of that behavior without being taught by someone.

    • @tyiffpeijc8702
      @tyiffpeijc8702 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Slow down, Cole Fan didn't say we should blame the child sexual abusers. They said we should talk about it more because it's something many don't know about, and they're right.

      Tyiff Pejic cole fan Stated that there are Child Abusers abusing children( which is true, but also left out why its true). The wording in their comment made it seem like their soley blaming child abusers. I hate that, because people get mad at that child not the person who taught them that behavior.

    This is awesome example of an ideal interview with celebrities actually talking about causes they are involved in. Rather than the talk show host being like "you volunteer with who? Good for you. That's incredible work they do, incredible." And then move on without letting them explain why it's soooo important.
    That is much more important than their little 'fight' with another celebrity about the best kind of cheese.

    Interesting... I have friends who have been victims of sexual assault, but I rarely know about it until they find out that other friends have talked to me about it. Once they find out that others have been OK talking to me about it, and that I never judge them negatively for it and keep their identities private, more are able to open up and actually have someone to talk to about it. It's tragic that there's such a severe stigma on it that victims feel they can't even tell close friends about it... =(
    And even more tragic that there are actually people out there who would blame or judge victims...!

    • @agonleed3841

      Michael Berthelsen most times they have been telling you for years. I've seen that happen by my own recollection of those who had a problem and noticing their actions. You have to be observant.
      I'm 33. Most of the women I came in contact with are strangers. I've had more fuck buddies than relationships and more just friends. But over 90% of women have been able to speak to me. And I'm not this WHITE KNIGHT "I'm gonna take all your troubles away" type of guy. I'm just able to speak to people on a level that makes them feel like we've been friends forever. And that talent also comes from being able to see cues.
      Keep up the good work for being a trusted person. And listen, hug, talk, apologize as if YOU were the person who did it..being able to separate yourself, but give t hst feeling of closure that they can't get anywhere else.
      I apologized all men...for me I've heard of more women....and I....

      That is lodged pretty deep in our brains. We are primed to believe in a fair and equitable worlds. By following the rules bad things won't happen, but they will if we break them. Karma, "what goes around comes around" and all that.
      Therefore, if someone becomes a victim of crime or misfortune, there must something they did wrong. We would be inclined to believe that the victim has a co-responsibility, deserved it, or worse is less of a human being than the rest of us. To some extent a victim will be taboo, tainted, shunned and untouchable.
      My advice is: Never be a victim. Even if you are a victim, don't be one.
      Maybe the worst part is that the victims themselves can fall in the same trap. Renaming victims "survivors" is good, but ultimately that is a word game, and "victims must be to blame otherwise the universe is capricious" is a strong instinct.

    • @MichaelBerthelsen
      @MichaelBerthelsen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Agon Leed I think he's trying to explain the tendency to blame the victim from a psychological perspective. That the idea that victims are to blame (at least partially) is in the human psyche because of an instinctive belief in karma. And that sometimes victims blame themselves too, even though they should endeavor not to.
      I think it's more an explanation of the underlying psychology than his personal opinion.

    • @MichaelBerthelsen
      @MichaelBerthelsen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      42 jade Dude, you misunderstand his point entirely. His point is the BELIEF in karma, or something similar, even if subconscious, causes people to partially blame victims, as if they somehow had it coming. He's trying to explain the problem, not excuse his own opinion for blaming victims...

    This is why we as women need the me-too movement since the dawn of time we have been subjected to abuse and it is time to right this wrong. We are never going back to the way it was and every time I see a comment about, being over the me-too movement I think what are you afraid of, why are you not standing up with women to help end this abhorrent behaviour, are you sitting in the dark waiting for a knock on your door, are an abuser yourself, if not why wouldn't you want a better world for your wifes and daughters.

    • @denomi39
      @denomi39 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      its a dogs life its not the metoo movement people are afraid of, its the false ideas that have formed because of it through feminazis and sjw. For example, it has become guilty until proven innocent. So in return, people have started to regard it as a joke. Such as, as we speak, I am now being reported for harrassing some lady simply because i yawned 10 feet from her.
      I can put this in detail, but its utube and i havent slept

    • @denomi39
      @denomi39 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      "False Ideas?" - this is not attacking the Metoo movement, it is attacking the biproduct of the metoo movement from the people who abuse the system, such as yourself, and the ideas that have formulated across from it. "guilty before being proven innocent, false accusations, etc.," have all emerged from people who are using the metoo movement for their own agenda; instead of helping it, they damage its image. This is what you are doing as you use it as a tool to attack someone that who you have no idea where he stands on this matter.
      "how you should be held responsible for your actions?" -What do you mean? Have you ever heard of a court of law?
      " you are exactly the type of person that needs to be targeted from the movement" -You don't even know me nor do you know where I stand. All I did was give an example of what the opposing side feels since the original poster asked why people would feel they are over the metoo movement. But thank you for showing why people believe they have to start walking on eggshells now unless they want to be attacked by ignorant feminazis/sjws.
      " why do you think it is okay to sexually harrass women?" -I never said it was. Quit putting words in people's mouths.
      "it is clear from the way you talk that there is more to your bs story then just yawning" -That was an example of a joke currently going on against the metoo movement that emerged due to people such as yourself who indiscriminately and falsely yell out "metoo metoo metoo," against people because they feel they can without repercussions and without realizing the effect it has on the ones who are innocent. I don't understand how anyone would believe that that was an actual event that happened unless they live under a rock.
      " i feel sorry for any and all women in your life. yes, including your mother, that did a horrid job of raising you." - I feel sorry for everyone around you and any movement you support if every time you are in the face of opposition, you result to insults instead of facts.

      King Frosty IX thanks for the clarification, I think I can understand your frustration with the by product of the me-too and times-up movements, yes there are bad apples in every movement that seem to sabotage the whole point of what people are trying to accomplish, equality, justice or even a chance to move forward after a life altering event, I know some people don't understand why a women or man would wait 20-30 yrs to speak about their experiences thats because of shame or blaming themselves often an assault happens if you made a stupid mistake or are in the wrong place at the wrong time or even by a spouse or friend even relatives, also it wasn't talked about it was a dirty little secret that they have lived with often alone, if you were strong enough to report it the procedure of doing a rape kit is horrendous, my was done with six male cops in the room, there are a multitude of reasons why victims didn't speak out earlier and for the first time we can without shame, me I'm not about putting all men a one category because not all men are abusers or rapest, but it would be nice to have men to stand with women to change what was common behaviour, that women have always encountered in their daily lives, thats what I would like to see happen. Peace to you

I first heard about this kit problem on SVU and started researching it and I've recently been seeing commercials for an organization that's trying to raise money to get these kits processed. More attention should be given to this issue and a long time ago. I contributed to the Detroit charity when I read about their backlog, a few years ago. I agree with Mariska Hargitay's statements...it was hard to fathom when I learned about this problem. Each State that has a backlog should be required to give a public statement to their communities. Victims should start following up with local police departments after going more than 6 months without an update on their case, because law enforcement has to be pushed to do their ENTIRE job it seems. Criminals are not the only ones that deserve due process; Victims/Survivors also deserve due process of their case. They deserve justice too. Thank you to all who are working to turn this wrong right 🙌👍❤ And may Survivors never give up that they will have justice...one example is the capture of the SC rapist in California--a former police officer! 😣

I feel like that must have been hard for her, that many of those accounts must have been very disturbing and hard to read and at times she probably did wish for more positiviity, but I'm proud of her for not shutting down in the face of these stories and turning it into a positive campaign to help others.

    She is such a fantastic advocate, I had assumed that she was a survivor herself. She is doing important and incredibly painful work, and she is doing it damn well.
