    SMT - Since the motor was found to be rusty, I can't help but wonder if a previous owner had it on a basement layout that got flooded? It may not be a bad idea to inspect all the metal parts for signs of corrosion, when you disassemble the loco for lubrication. Then apply some WD40 and/or oil to those parts to arrest further corrosion.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I suspect they were ether in a flood or exposed to high amounts of moisture. Especially considering how the other one had the exact same issue.

    Very smart move to refit this with a more modern can motor! The 1st generation motors can be troublesome, as you have already discovered. You can use small diameter plastic or rubber tubing to join the motor shaft to the gearbox, something a lot of the older steam and diesel models did from the factory! A more flexible coupling there will make the slow speed running smoother, too. Nice work getting this vintage model back up and running! Cheers!

    I'm always impressed with your ability to take apart these engines and put them back together and make them work. I have a Mantua- Tyco 1776 engine. I put it on my test track and ran it back and forth, it hasn't ran in quite a while. But I started to smell something in the engine. It's probably a quick fix for you, but does it just need oil or is it an engine problem. I figured that I would ask the expert in this matter. I always enjoy your recorded videos. But I'm sorry that I'm not able to catch any of your live streaming because of the random times that you make them. But time is usually a factor in that I don't have a lot of time for an hour or two video to watch. But I definitely enjoy your other videos. Keep up the great work that you do and the videos too. Hi SMT Mainline, just an FYI that vintage Rivarossi motors don't like to be struck or shook or pried apart. That is a 3rd gen Rivarossi motor, it doesn't have open armature bearings, so you don't have to worry about resetting all those tiny bearings. Those old motors are just like old Lionel AC train motors, just clean out the gunk and the commutator and put it back together with a drop of oil on each end of the bearing shaft. As long as the windings are good, you shouldn't have a problem with it running. As far as the tender's supply of voltage, it is necessary, so you need to make sure the coupling rod from the tender makes good contact with the hole and spring actuator in the tender rod. Then as long as the rest of the powertrain is serviced, it should work flawlessly. If your Armature windings are broken you need to just solder it back in it's place. It's a pretty easy fix, just make sure you are using a 50/50 Solder.

    She's screaming for a good oil and wheel clean, besides that she looks good.
    I believe the front is loose because the shell and chassis were used for other hudsons, specifically the New York Central's streamlined dreyfuss hudsons (note how the firebox isn't flush to the streamline casing and instead sticks out a bit). They most likely kept the front end separate from the rest of the shell to be resourceful... Quite a clever choice. Chances are that the clips/glue on your model are loose or broken.
    I wonder what a Rivarossi NH I5 would have looked like... I know there's a Mehano one (I've got one in need of attention), but that's just a repaint of a Canadian Pacific royal hudson. The NH I5s and the ATSF Blue Goose (Geese?) are nearly the same locomotive under the hood... I have no idea why they didn't attempt them besides not receiving the go-ahead from whoever owned the rights to the design at the time.

      Actually William from Gopernoper's Trains on TH-cam purchased a slightly sloppy I5 from eBay that was actually a Redbox model. Check it out if you're interested.

      @@varrunningtrains4112 I took a second to find it, considering the recolor work that Rivarossi did with the other hudsons, it seems like a valid choice if one was ever made.

    I actually found this engine on eBay but it’s missing a tender 😂 so idk if I could even get it to run, also it’s 89$ so I don’t know if it’s a good idea to try and buy it over all. But at least I know if needed I could repair it by seeing what you did here.

    Being loud is not a good sign for a Rivarossi engine, I noted years ago that Rivarossi engines were the quietest on the market. Sounded like a quartz watch.

    Brass wire wheel. Will do the trick. Spin commentator on the wire wheel. Since brass won't do damage but will clean all rust off. Done thus before. Not just on trains. 110 motors 220 motors. Between the brass wheel and some pb blaster should be good.
