  • It is not a myth anymore, Espresso from an Aeropress became reality! 9 bar of pressure, a professional espresso basket and your Aeropress is ready for prime time!
    Please be aware that working with 9 bar (or higher) on the Aeropress puts it to it's limits and when done extensively, or improperly might be dangerous! Please refer to my other 3 bar Aeropress modifications, which are certainly within the limits of the Aeropress. If you know how to use tools such as a drilling machine and a grinding wheel and are capable of handling high pressure responsibly, then you are ready for your own Äropress(o)!

    Engineer here. I'd be very careful with these uses of the aeropress. As you've experienced yourself the most likely point of failure is not the cylindrical wall but rather the bayonet locking part at the bottom (either the notches in the body or the cap will bend away or shear off). These failures are independent of the fill level or plunger position since it's the axial force at work here, not the radial one. A cap and filter coming off at max pressure can shatter glass and ceramic below or produce flying plastic splinters (in addition to the hot mess of boiling coffee flying around).
    A single test (even up to breaking of the aeropress) is most likely not enough to properly judge the durability. The most dangerous and not so obvious part for the layperson is material fatigue. What works well a thousand times may fail horribly the "thousand an one"-th time because the material has seen too many duty cycles. It is almost impossible to predict fatigue without detailed knowledge of the material and every manufacturing step.
    The European pressure equipment directive says that simple pressure vessels where the product of volume times pressure is below 25 (in units of liters times bars) "shall be designed and manufactured in accordance with [the] sound engineering practice" (Paragraph 4, Section 3). I doubt that single pressure test is enough, especially if you don't know the exact materials and manufacturing process of the chamber. I know the directive doesn't apply to you as long as you don't sell these things, but I believe it's prudent to follow its recommendations even in DIY situations.
    Also keep in mind the amount of CO2 inside a commercial bottle is enough to displace the oxygen in a room and cause asphyxiation. The pressure is about 50 bars. If you use the wrong regulator and yank it open at once by accident you will break something. Never design or use a pressure vessel without a PRV (pressure relief valve)! In espresso machines they are usually called OPV (overpressure valve) but serve a slightly different purpose as they continuously open an return the excess water to the tank.
    I would strongly discourage people from trying this at home - please be more careful and don't hurt yourself.

      With the 9 bar model the entire pressure of the contraption is held in place by the silicon of the plunger and plunger itself, and the basket. Both are vertically stuck inside the metal contraption. When using my 3 bar mod, the entire pressure/weight is on the cap filter and bayonet locking, that is why I stopped at 3 bar with this mod. (although I had my girlfriend adding her weight onto mine and it also worked, but I don't recommend that. With the 9 bar mod, I assume the first thing that blows, will be the gasket horizontally.
      I do understand your concerns, and I do agree that single tests are not conclusive, and I am not recommending the 9 bar mod as a daily driver. I am using a thick plexiglas cylinder on top pf the entire contraption when pushing my 9 bar shots, to have some extra protection.
      In the description of the video I recommend another regulator than the one I displayed in the video, which has a safety valve built in (around 10 bar). All my pneumatic equipment is rated for 15 bar.
      I appreciate your concern, and I agree that such undertakings should, if at all, only be performed with full knowledge of the risks and proper safety measures.

    Love the video, love the energy, love the Aeropress. Thanks for making my morning a bit better. I would love to see whatever you think of next. I was thinking that maybe a piece of PVC that slides over the aeropress could add some extra protection but also you could mount the hoses, and pressure gauge and tank coming off the PVC section. That way it could be a nice little unit. Also I would love to see you try with a lever, although I might have to try it myself too.

      I did a lot of testing ahead, not in my living room though! I pushed roughly 100 shots so far and all good, but I am using a plexiglas cylinder, 20cm wide and 80cm high, that I put over the entire contraption when brewing with higher than 4 bar. I am aware the Aeropress has not been designed for continues high pressure, but sofar, so good!

    Love your idea and how the set up looking very robust and neat! The metal plate and rod holder is brilliant, similar like motorcycle suspension tool. If I’m making this, for added safety I may just put a stainless steel hose clamp or exhaust pipe clamp (which has wider plate) at the outer aeropress housing where it receive pressure, just to prevent it cracking or exploding.     Thanks for sharing your mod!! This is such an interesting idea.
    I'm curious if the basket mod is basically what joepresso did but with a non pressurized basket instead? Could be something more comfortable for people who aren't confident in too much DIY.
    I'd actually love to see a DIY vid of how you built your steel frame. It looks pretty simple but I'm curious about the thought process of the materials you used there - was it just the most convenient and cost effective from the hardware store?
    Subcribed and looking forward to future vids!
    That's the main sticking point for me not to start building this next Saturday, haha!

      I dont own a joepresso, but it seems very similar, except that you don't need to modify the Aeropress with joepresso. But I am not sure if it can withstand 9 bar (gasket, filter cap). Whenever I get hands on it, i ll test it.
      The steel (aluminum) frame was the result of a lot of testing, the threaded rods are super easy to find and cheap and the aluminum is easy to cut holes into. Obviously it could be improved in terms of functionality and design., but I don't think it can get much lighter in weight. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    amazing! congrats on putting this together and making it work!..Now, I wonder how the cost of this compares with the cost of a Flair manual espresso machine. Two advantages to the Flair: 1) It's not DIY, it comes ready to use out of the box, and 2) you don't have to use a CO2 cartridge every time you want a shot.

      The Co2 9 bar version is not meant as a daily brewer, just wanted to show it is possible. My 3 bar mods on the other hand are quite easy to DIY, for way below the flair price and can be used as a daily lightweight,portable espresso maker. Another advantage of the Aeropress mod over the Flair is that you don't need any pre-heating, since the plastic does not steal a lot of heat.

    I was pretty stoked aobut the x-bar espresso that got promised on patreon. apparently it never made it. this is fairly cool man! makes me wanna build my own, but I would go for metal

      The main issue with metal for the cylinder is temperature control. The Aeropress is thermally super stable. I made over 1000 !!! 6-9 bar Espresso already with my modified Aeropress GO and still rockin'! The main thing to take care of is that the black screw bottom thingy (where the filter basket sits in) sits flush on the lower support.

      I actually visited the producer of the X bar espresso maker (at least it looked almost identical) in Thailand (Chiang Mai) and even tried some espresso from it in a coffe shop where they had some proto types, it was pretty nice, but a bit variable in outcome, unless you pre heat the metal...

    Putting AeroPress aside, I would be very interested in a machine that can automate the whole process but allow to play, twick and program all the parameters of coffee brewing: grind size, coffee amount, water:coffee ratio, water temperature, pressure and timing.

      Most medium to higher end espresso machines allow exactly that, but you still will need to do the puck preparation, I haven't seen a fully automatic puck prep machine yet.

      Just be aware when using higher pressure, you will need to clamp the Aeropress into some structure (I used 4 threaded iron rods and aluminum top and bottom plates) otherwise the bottom Aeropress stock filter cap might break. Please be careful with higher pressure!

    Fantastic! The modification is how science should be, keep experimenting! I wonder if the metal clip can be excluded if a custom made gasket to be used? Also, instead of CO2, how about using nitrogen gas as alternative?

      Thank you! I am not sure about Nitrogen use, I think it requires different pressure regulators. Food grade Nitrogen is being used with some beer and cold brewing though. Regarding the metal clip, I guess you are referring to the one that holds the shower screen in place? Well, it does just that, holding the screen in place, so when the water hits the shower screen, the coffee puck does not get destroyed by that force. Not sure why you would want to exclude it to fit another gasket, they should not interfere with each other.

I was thinking a gasket that are thick enough to do both, holding the metal shower screen but at the same time sealing between the Aeropress mount and the screw lid. Lesser parts make this whole concept simpler (easier to clean) to go mainstream. A while ago, I was thinking using some hand/leg pump to create pressure haha. I like that metal stand that you built to ensure the cup wouldn't crushed during press, ever thought of a bigger contraption that use the leg or "you can sit on it"?

      @@TheKagaya1981 That is a nice idea! Not sure though if the larger gasket will give way to the swelling coffee puck during brewing process. If not, that might alter extraction. Lence Hendrick just posted a new manual espresso maker that works with a pump system, very interesting! Haha, I was thinking of mounting a bicycle saddle somehow, might be fun!

    Pretty nice build, I would be a bit worried about extra CO2 dissolving in the water and making the espresso a bit more acid or even fizzy (in a too-fine grind scenario), but seems like it wasn't a problem. And there always nitrogen to test.
    Other potential problem would be the temperature control, both from the thermal mass of the whole system and the gas that gets pretty chilly when expanding. But if it's tasting good then that's all that matters

      Roasted beans naturally contain lots of Co2, when being released ending up as crema in your cup. I didn't perceive any change in taste due to the Co2. Will try to do some temp measurements and see if there is a large difference in brewing temp with Co2 and air. In any case the taste is pretty good!

    I think I will just keep using my AP for regular coffee. If and when I need real espresso I will just pick up a Flair or similar press. Pretty cool the AP can take that kind of abuse. Means that one AP probably last for the rest of my life. I have 4 of them. So 4 lifetimes of coffee. I still don’t know how people wear out the rubber plunger. My first press is the one I use daily and it has made 1000s of cups and still on the original rubber. They are a very solid tool. Never go away without one.

    This is crazy! 3 bars are 43.5113 psi, much more tan the presure in a tire! 9 bars are 130.534 psi, more presure than in four tires, I think this is insane! I apreciate you reach this with an aeropress but are many modifications, I think you can desaign a cheap and safer espresso machine, if a tire can explode, I think aeropress is not safer than a tire. Maybe aeropress can suport few brews but the material will become weak and eventually explodes. (please, excuse my english).

      Dear Luis, I understand your concerns, and I had similar ones in the beginning. My first couplo of hundred shots I used a Plexiglas dome to protect me in case of explosion. Now, I have pushed almost a thousand 6-9 bar pressure shots and the Aeropress is still intact! What an amazing product! I made some small, but important modifications though to my alumnium table, will post about it hopefully soon!

    You could make a leverage arm like in a flair machine, to build up the pressure. I would like to see that.

    also... maybe some kind of small acrylic or plexiglass blast shield around that frame would be a good idea. Death by aeropress wouldnt be a good headline

      Thanks, am slowly starting to ponder NO2 possibilities! You are exactly right, I am actually using a Plexiglas cylinder that fits on top the entire contraption to give an extra layer of security, but still allowing me to watch what's going on.

    Awesome idea! Have you considered using N2 instead? I’ve tasted cold brew coffee from a keg that was accidentally tapped with CO2 and it ruined the texture and taste.

    Impressive work! However, I would like to point out some issues:
    1. The pneumatic parts as shown in your video may not be designed for food processing purposes, which may contain hazardous materials to human body (e.g. lubricants, particles generated from time to time due to wear)
    2. The polymer tubes were usually designed for applications not greater than 7 bars of pressure, the tubes for hydraulic control can withstand much higher pressure, these tubes were usually reinforced, and they would never look like the ones shown in this video.

      Thanks for your feedback. Actually all the pneumatic equipment I used (hoses, connectors, gauge, valve, regulator, etc...) are rated for at least 15 bar. In my mind, the largest 'pollutor' in this set up might be the Co2 tank, that is why I used the Soda stream and Soda capsules, instead of cheaper Co2 tanks for welding, or air guns. The entire 9 bar setup was meant as a proof of concept and not as the ultimate daily espresso maker. I d rather recommend my 3 bar mod which is easier to build, cheaper, lighter and offers great opportunity for some extra sports!

    See the balloon effect you were getting….that’s the point I’ve had with all these gadgets claiming you get espresso from the Aeropress. It never was designed to make espresso based off of pressure. That being said, it’s awesome that you went to all these lengths to make espresso with and Aeropress. A bit scary though. Lol

      When inserting the plunger deeper, the balloon effect is almost gone. I am planing on testing the Aeropress with this mod to see at which pressure it will explode, what is your bet? (I will take precautions for sure, not to get hurt)

    Question: When you put the plunger in and push it down, where does the air go? Why isn't that push pushing water into the coffee puck?

      The plunger has the blue hose connected, when plunging down, the hose is still open on the other end, air can escape. Once in the proper position I close the other end with pressure gauge and regulator.

      I am going to find out. So far, with 9 bar, I guess I pushed close to 100 shots. I found that the Aeropress Go has slightly thicker walls, will use that soon.

    I'm impressed but unfortunately, at the same time, scared to own something like that (if parts do become available). I'm a clumsy man. Since parts seem like mostly modular (or have to be manually set up), I probably will absent mindedly make a mistake and end up hurt myself. ahaha

      So far my Aeropress is still intact, and so am I, but it is true, 9 bar is close to the limit and I am using most of the time an acrylic cylinder that I put on top of the entire contraption, so I can see how extraction is going, but in case of failure I and my environment are protected.

    If you buy another aeropress, cut the plunger near the base, then put it in below this plunger to create three distinct chambers, would you then be able to separate the CO2 from the coffee and reduce the CO2 usage? 9 Bars in the top piston should be 9 bars pushing on the water, right?

      Nice idea! I guess the main issue will be that the cut plunger with the silicone seal will not remain in the same horizontal angle, but might get stuck. The long shaft of the plunger also serves to keep it at the right angle inside the Aeropress. I am not sure it would save that much of Co2, since the air sitting on top of the coffee puck would need to get compressed as well and to transfer the 9 bar of the Co2 chamber to that air chamber will probably require quite some air volume. When using about 3 bar of pressure with my body weight, I need almost half of the Aeropress chamber space, air compresses quite a bit.

      @@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 Right. I guess you would need to have it be flared at the top or something so that it stays flush to the walls of the press.
      If you made the pneumatic plunger sit right on top of the hydraulic plunger, it wouldn't require much gas at all. Mostly the difference would be at the end, avoiding any excess venting when the water has passed.
      Maybe have the bottom section with two plunger segments to keep it aligned, then the top plunger with the hole in it sitting right on top?
      Does the CO2 here alter the flavor at all? That was my line of thought mostly, to get rid of as much CO2 in the grounds as possible.

      @@dalsio In terms of Co2 changing the flavor, I can't notice any 'odd' flavors. Actually, roasted beans do contain quite a bit of Co2 due to the roasting process and that is what actually creates the crema in your cup. Creme is essentially the foam on your beer, which is mostly created by Co2.

      My latest Aeropress mod has an even smaller area of air above the coffee puck, so I need even less Co2. With a small 16g Co2 cartridge should I get about 5 Espressi. With a sodastream bottle probably around 120 Espressi.

      No the Co2 doesn't seem to dissolve into the water, and the taste doesn't seem to change at all, compared to air pressure. Maybe it gets released as crema, alongside with the Co2 accumulated during the roasting process, trapped inside the beans.

      Yes, I tried, but Nitrogen does not dissolve well in hot liquids, only on cold ones.
