I was twenty four years old when I met the woman I would call my own
Twenty two grand kids now growing old, in the house that your brother brought ya
On the summer day when I proposed, I made that wedding ring from dentist gold
And I asked her father but her daddy said no
You can’t marry my daughter
She and I went on the run
Don’t care about religion
I’m gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan, and I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
Well I met at her Guys in the second world war
She was working on a soldier’s ward
Never had I seen such beauty before
The moment that I saw her
Nancy was my yellow rose
And we got married wearing borrowed clothes
We got eight children now growing old
Five sons and three daughters
She and I went on the run
Don’t care about religion
I’m gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan, and I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
From her snow white streak in her jet black hair
Over sixty years I’ve been loving her
Now we’re sat by the fire, in our old armchairs
You know Nancy I adore ya
From a farm boy born near Belfast town
I never worried about the king and crown
Cause I found my heart upon the southern ground
There’s no difference, I assure ya
She and I went on the run
Don’t care about religion
I’m gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan, and I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
About Ed Sheeran:
Ed Sheeran may be the quintessential pop star of the 2010s: an internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning singer/songwriter who seems to acknowledge no boundaries between styles or eras with elements of folk, hip-hop, pop, dance, soul, and rock woven throughout his music.
His incredible catalogue includes the studio albums ‘+’ (plus), ‘x’ (multiply) and ‘÷’ (divide) which spawned hit singles such as ‘The A team’ , ’Lego House’, ‘Sing', ‘Thinking Out Loud’, ‘Photograph’, ‘Shape Of You’, ‘Castle on The Hill’ and ‘Perfect’.
In 2019, Ed Sheeran released the genre-spanning ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ which featured a wide-range of artists including ‘Justin Bieber’, ‘Camilla’ Cabello’, ‘Travis Scott’, ‘Eminem’, ‘Cardi B, ‘Paulo Londra’, ‘Bruno Mars’ and ‘Stormzy’ amongst many others, producing hits such as ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Beautiful People’, ‘South of The Border’ and ‘Take Me Back To London’.
#EdSheeran #NancyMulligan #divide
"Nancy Mulligan" is one of the most personal songs on the album, telling the story of how his grandparents, William Sheeran, a Protestant from Belfast, Northern Ireland and Nancy Mulligan (real name Anne Mulligan), a Catholic from Republic of Ireland, met, fell in love during the Second World War and got married at the Wexford border.
Ed Sheeran said: "They got engaged and no one turned up at their wedding. He stole all the gold teeth in his dental surgery and melted them down into a wedding ring, and they wore borrowed clothes to get married, and just basically have this kind of Romeo and Juliet romance, which is like the most romantic thing. So I thought I'd write a song about it and make it a jig."
In an interview with the Irish Times, talking about the song's Irish roots, Ed Sheeran said "I don't think enough people use Irish folk in pop music... Hopefully if these songs are successful, more people will do a bit more like it."
Thank you for this info

Galway Girl is really fit for loud parties, tons of people and music; but Nancy Mulligan is that song you play at someone’s wedding, or anniversary. Something pure, sweet, simple and honestly romantic. It’s like something from a fantasy movie!

Imagine what it was like when he first showed this to his family. How heartwarming and sweet his family felt that he wrote such a wonderful song about their grandparents.
It's like the story of a regular Ukrainian soldier who falls in love with a Ukrainian girl who came as a medical aid during a Russian invasion and runs away with the Ukrainian girl to western Ukraine.
There is actually a video of an Irish News company showing it to the titular Nancy for the first time. Her reaction was "It was fine. As long as I’m not the one playing it.”
Just casual amusement, no thought that her story was now an international hit song. Adorably humble really.

Ciara O'Donohoe I'm Irish as well
Most people know this is about Ed Sheeran Grandparents and their love story, but did u know that it was based in Ireland (Northern and Republic) and Nancy Mulligan's Father said "no, you can't marry daughter" because William Sheeran was a Protestant from Belfast, Northern Ireland, while Nancy was a Catholic from the Republic of Ireland and currently there were terrorist attacks from both sides.
Ethan Mcallister No I didn't. But now I do. That's a cool part of the story not many people know about. ☺
Ethan Mcallister yep I'm Irish still living here William was a protestant from the north and Nancy was a Caotlic fron the south

Ed Sheeran told the love story of his grandparents through a song and its so---- words can't even explained it. He's just so damn incredibly genius
Karina Villa and it's a shame she's dead now she did so much for him, even more than his parents, so he wrote supermarket flowers as if she was his mom because it's about his nan how beautiful and PERFECT 😂 xxx
Supermarket Flowers is about his maternal grandmother, written from the perspective of his mother. And there is a video of Nancy reacting to the song Nancy Mulligan after Divide was released, which of course includes the song Supermarket Flowers, so Supermarket Flowers can't be about Nancy.
zerubablegrrrrrr in all fair-Ness I read it from and article we'll I say read I watched it, and it could be his other grandmother, or he wrote this after she died when he and was talking to his grandfather about her so to be honest either one of us could be right 😉

This is by far Ed’s best song. Even as someone who isn’t a huge fan of him, I can’t stop listening to this. He should make a whole album of this type of music.

I love this song and I love how he's singing about his grandparents and their love.
Thanks Niall + Harry + Ed = perfection and they are life lol
It's silly. How could you write about someone else's love
Duvee Hie um, why not
maybe because they are his grandparents. why not write about their love without it we wouldn't have him.
The love between his grandmother and grandfather might be completely different to the love Ed feels with his many girlfriends. He doesn't understand the circumstances his grandparents were in, or their special connection they had with one another. Love songs are about YOUR past experiences. You can't write about other people's love, no matter how well documented it might be

The part where it says "she and I went on the run, no care about religion": for those who didn't know this: Protestants and Catholics never normally married in Ireland. The Mulligans were Protestants and the Sheerans were Catholics. But religious factions shouldn't get in the way of love.
And this was at the time that Ed Sheeran's grandparents first met; probably around 1939 or 1940.
I thought it was the other way round considering he's Grandad was from Northern Ireland.
The Catholics were in Ireland, the Protestants were in Northern Ireland.
@@dominicjamessebastiankrone6690 Yes? But you said "the Mulligan's were Protestants and that the Sheeran's were Catholic." Which is incorrect considering that William SHEERHAN is from Northern Ireland and Nancy MULLIGAN is from the Republic of Ireland.

My mother was a catholic and my father was a Protestant, but they got together anyways at the height of the troubles. The ‘dont care about religion’ line really hits home for me

Ed Sheeran is one of the best singers. This song confirms it.
this somehow reminds me of the song in how to train your dragon 2 where hiccup's parents singing to their song
zakira zainal efendi me too
this reminds me of brave
Feqrless if your referring to brave as in the Disney film brave with the wee red headed princess it's the Gaelic element also found in Scotland x
"For the dancing and the dreaming"
That's what the song is called. Love that one.
zakira zainal efendi that's because that song was also a folk song, though it was scottish
The cutest part is that Nancy Mulligan is his grandmom and William Sheeran is his grandpa. 🌈
Ed's song 'Afire Love' is about his grandfather (& grandmother) and was played at his funeral
Grandmom?
OMG I was wondering if that was his parents or even past relatives. That's so cooool.
@@veronicam2935 grandmOm?
@@annecreaney5152 grandmom is like grandmother or grandma
This and Galway Girl makes me want to visit Ireland now. I am in love with this contemporary twist on a folk style of music.
You should visit Ireland! I live in Maynooth near Dublin, and it is a lovely place.
ireland is definitely worth the visit. i live down in kerry, and it's really beautiful here! we have killarney about a half an hour away us which had the killarney national park. the cliffs of moher are a few hours away from us but they're well worth the visit to see the fog come in over the cliffs is fucking amazing :>

[Verse 1]
I was twenty-four years old
When I met the woman I would call my own
Twenty-two grand kids now growing old
In that house that your brother bought ya
On the summer day when I proposed
I made that wedding ring from dentist gold
And I asked her father, but her daddy said, "No
You can't marry my daughter"
[Chorus]
She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan
And I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
[Verse 2]
Well, I met her at Guy's in the second World War
And she was working on a soldier's ward
Never had I seen such beauty before
The moment that I saw her
Nancy was my yellow rose
And we got married wearing borrowed clothes
We got eight children, now growing old
Five sons and three daughters
[Chorus]
She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan
And I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
[Verse 3]
From her snow white streak in her jet black hair
Over sixty years I've been loving her
Now we're sat by the fire in our old armchairs
You know Nancy, I adore ya
From a farm boy born near Belfast town
I never worried about the king and crown
'Cause I found my heart upon the southern ground
There's no difference, I assure ya
[Chorus]
She and I went on the run
Don't care about religion
I'm gonna marry the woman I love
Down by the Wexford border
She was Nancy Mulligan
And I was William Sheeran
She took my name and then we were one
Down by the Wexford border
