Ive watched over a hundred hours of content in preparation for entering the world of bee keeping and this was the first to take time for this really basic comb analysis. Without being able to identify the basic contents of a comb on these frames, you aren't bee keeping, and I'm really glad Barnyard Bees realized this kind of info was badly lacking on all the other channels. Thank you!!!

Thank you for this - it helps to see this on new comb, rather than older comb, as I am just starting, having purchased a package of your bees that arrived May 6. I watch your videos, Fred Dunn's, flow hives and a few others as much as possible. The bees you sent me are so docile that I have not used any smoke, bare hands and haven't had any issue with regard to their temperament. Also, the bees were void of any infestation of any kind, best I can tell. no mites or beetles. Really happy. The only thing I probably should have done to begin with is put in some sort of foundation. They have cross combed like crazy initially. I am brand new at this, but I had to take out the equivalent of maybe half frame in cross combing which is all nectar or clear comb. I ended up buying foundation (better bee wax) , and I am now trying to stay out of the hive for a couple weeks before I check again. Each time I do something, I learn a better way to do it.. as I am going through this. Hopefully my colony survives my mistakes.. any comments on the cross combing would be helpful - as well as how often I can be in the hive to check and adjust the cross combing.

  • @notsure7874

THANK YOU!!! You said that TH-cam is overloaded with advanced stuff, and you're right. I can't find anything to get started. Figured out more on this one video than the last 5 combined. All the others point at things on the comb like "there's pollen, there's workers, there's drones, there's honey, and capped honey ..." and they never say anything about how to tell which is which!
Would have been great if you mentioned what a nuc is for. You mentioned that a mini nuc is for breeding ... anyway, you did say more were coming - I'm going to look for it now! I don't even have a man made beehive yet. Have a wild hive that took up residence in an old deck box, and I've been looking at bee keeping since I found them. I love having them around to pollenate the garden, so finding those got me interested.

For all concerned about bee stings, after making sure the stinger is out.... use your pinky finger to get some ear wax from your ear (gross I know) and apply the wax to the sting. It really helps with wasp stings and fire ant bites as well. For me, the pain goes away withing 30 sec to a minute and it won't swell up. After about 10 minutes, I usually forget that I was stung/bit. Fire ant bites/stings usually take a couple of applications, but if done right, the bite/sting won't puss up or hurt.
Great thing about this method is, most people always have their own ears and fingers within reach at all times.
Those with allergies might want to consider keeping benadryl or EpiPens handy.

i’m in a few fascistbook bee groups. i posted a picture in one asking what it was (it was a queen cell near the top of the frame) and i got some really a$$ hole responses like “did you do any research before you got bees” why do people have to be so nasty? Anyway, turns out i needed to set up a swarm trap because my bees had decided to split their own hive. They did it one day this week, probably monday or tuesday. So this coming week i will get another 10 frame brood box and a feeder for them so once they have established themselves on those 5 frames, i can upgrade them and get them ready for winter.

    Hi David,
This is that 71 year old in Colorado Springs.
My step son and I are doing this as a way of hanging out together; we both enjoy bees, and are very excited to be successful.
What do you do if you have started a package (the only hive you have-just one package) and the queen flies off?
I know that question shows my lack of experience; however I might need this information for the future.
Thank you for all your very informative videos.

I keep close attention to you. I'm in Ellijay so our timing is very close. I have my first hive going with two boxes waiting for bees. I believe I saw three queen cells and I'm guessing that if there are queen cells that's because something happened to the queen. I was told that I could do a slip but I probably wouldn't get honey for this year.. I've pretty much left my hive alone. I did put a medium super on and they have recently move to the super.

Your videos are very helpful and very informative. I received a recommendation for your videos from an experienced beekeeper that I personally know and I have learned a lot from your videos. Something that I was wondering is, I noticed that on the wax foundation inside of the cell cut-outs there is a “Y” shape on one side and an upside-down “Y” shape inside of the cell cut-outs on another side of the frame. I read that the side of the frame with the foundation that has an upside-down “Y” (which looks like a Mercedes logo” must be positioned facing the middle and inside of the hive, while the side with a regular “Y” must be positioned towards the outside of the hive. Have you heard anything about this, and does it sound correct?

David, I just noticed that how your bees are doing very well at laying brood. My question is are they doing too good? I know your in the business of growing more bees, which is it possible for the genetics to be bred out for good honey production? Kind of like beef cattle verses dairy cattle. I was just curious if you keep this in mind during the growth of your apiary. Thanks for the video!

Really appreciate the beginner's video Dave. I'm about 2/3 through the "Beekeeping for Dummies" book I got from you a couple months ago, and I know it's going to be all book learning until I have my own hives. I have a question though: I know they feed royal jelly to young larvae to make new queens (swarm cells), but I don't know if you can tell the difference between royal jelly and honey on the frame, or if royal jelly is even there at all, or whether they have to do something else to the honey to make it royal jelly. In other words, I'm confused about it. Any clarification/explanation would be appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

    • @davidhaught84
      @davidhaught84  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The royal jelly looks like a whitish snot material in the bottom of the cell, and you will see the larvae in the center of it feeding on it.

@@davidhaught84 Thank you!!! I probably would have seen that for the first time and been alarmed that something was terribly wrong. :)

Next year I'm interested in trying to make comb honey......that frame you have in the beginning where you showed the capped honey, can I use that type of frame and still get comb? Or do I need to use one without any wires? Oh and why do you number your frames? Is it to help put it back in order? (Nevermind lol you answered my question)

Thanks so much. Your. videos have helped me learn a lot. I esp like the reading the frame video. Question: can you see nectar in a hive frame? I am wondering if there are any signs of it in the hive. I understand from more experienced beekeepers in my area (Sacramento Calif) that external signs such as blackberry in bloom) signals nectar flow period. But how do I know if the bees have enough nectar and whether I should supplement w a protein patty?

You shouldn't have to feed pollen at all from March till August. Then feed till Feburary. We use ultra bee.

I did hive check on Friday and since then a couple of bees are more aggressive yesterday and today, buzzing around my head when I sit by my bistro table (hives are about 50 feet away. David, can you please answer my question about liquid ant bait on ants that are in the ceracell feeder when feeding in spring or fall is it safe to place them next to the hive? Also “Thank you” for all you do to help educate the new beekeepers like me!! This is my second attempt at it. nature killed my first attempt (black bear) ate my first two hives. I now have chain link and electric fence and also build another inside one of my buildings.

Bait the Beatle blasters with ant bait, as long as bees can't reach it they will be fine.

That was one of the best training videos I have received. Of course, I haven't seen all of your videos yet.

Dave, I just took a look at my hive today and noticed I didn't see any brood, eggs, or larvae. They swarmed a few weeks ago, but I thought there should be a new queen. I don't have an extra hive to try to save this one, so would you suggest I buy a new mated queen to save my colony? There are still bees in there, and I do see nectar/honey but thats about it. It really bummed me out when I saw there was no queen.

How would you identify a hive with foulbrood? If it is how do you treat it?

Do you have to separate the larva from the frame/honey?
