It's the end of the world.... The black cloud... Radiations... And a father with its child, his eternal love. Of course it's sad. The funeral tune for the last day of humanity. This song is deeper than that.

Exactly, Martin it's a real poet

      Tune is maybe ok conceptually.
Instrument choice though is quite bizzare...

For me, one of the few highlights on this album. Nothing touches Cover Me but this is Martin at his 21st Century best.

My favourite on the album. Very strong contrast between him proclaiming his eternal love for someone, while the black mushroom cloud rises and the radiation starts to pour. Eternity can be very short when the world is ending.

I like this one. I feel at home, so to speak, when I hear this kind of melody from Martin Gore and Depeche Mode. This type of brooding yet original tone has always been in Martin's repertoire of songs and was often represented on the early records.
Although the melody is of course not the same, Eternal reminds a bit of Martin's demo for Enjoy the silence - which Alan and producer Flood then turned into a pop song. Martin wasn't happy with how his almost depressing quiet ballad turned into an uptempo song, but that's how it had to be in the end.

An absolute apocalypse song, love how the song builds up to the final „loooove“

It's such a deep song, it's about the end of the world when they drop the bomb, its an ode to the one you love. This whole album is meant to be thought provoking not a top 10 winner, humanity needs to take a hard look at itself. Its refreshing a band is using their music to get a message across that some might find difficult to hear

I still think 'Just Can't get enough' and 'People are people' are their best songs. I grew up with those two as a teenager!😀

Is a song for His recently born baby, and he Is worry about polítics AND a possible nuclear war.
As well as any Man could, because nobody Will save the baby. Its too sad, but with a Lot of eternal love

Well if it's the end of the world by nukes and radiation it's not not going to be a happy tune is it. I like it, Martin wrote it with his daughter in mind. I Martin sings in beautifully.

i do not necessarily find it darker than other songs by Depeche in the 80's really.. I think it is a decent filler between songs on the album , but like a lot of of Dm songs from Exciter on , it is wasting great lyrical songs with awful music behind them that dont do justice to the over all song itself.

Definitely his weirdest song. I had the same reaction as you, like what the hell...? I've always wanted to ask Martin what he was going for. It's daring if nothing else.

Hy SEPH, there are some songs, as deep purple child in time, or queen bohemian rapsody, when people first time hear, they get frozen, don t know how to react, tjis is a song in tje same level, when more you listen to it more you love it as me, one of my favourite Martín songs, now at my age 54 i can difererence between comercial songs, and Artistics songs, for me every time i listen to it morebi like it it s a banger,,,,

When I saw your video, I genuinely had to laugh! I felt the same way as you did when I heard the song for the first time. Damned, what the hell was that? I think it was an experiment. It was brave to put it on the album. A B-Side or a demo... that´s all it is. Or is it? Seth. Do yourself a favor. Please comment on LIVE versions (like MADONNA, or MICHAEL JACKSON), or the current album (It´s great, in my opinion), or Maxi and Remix versions form earlier days. There is more to discover than with the last albums after SOFAD. Sorry, I´m old school. Please keep up.

Definitely ominous church vibes here. I actually don't hate this, but I usually just play cover me from this album and skip the rest.

I think Martin's voice is nice, but not high on my list of times. The music, while fitting the words, isn't particularly liked by me. This is on none of my playlists other than my "all Depeche Mode's stuff, no remixes". It's not something I'd ever turn on on purpose.
But the darkness of the words I like.
But then I'm someone who think the (very badly made) Jane's Addiction film "Gift" is probably the most romantic film made, and...
...that Heinlein's book "The Year of the Jackpot" is one of the prettiest, sweetest of stories with how it concludes the tale.
So, as always, take my own preference in flavors with a pinch of salt lol.
