Thanks Macc Man. It was nice to see The Crown is still going. Copious pints of Robinsons on a Friday night and then on to The Dirty Duck Keller Bar, happy daze!.
0:49 was Marks and Spencers for many years And the war memorial used to be where you are standing. It was moved a few years ago to near the Town Hall. 3:45 used to be BHS and other shops as well as the old bus station and the clock tower "Big Bill"
That massive building site with the giant car park was supposed to have been started nearly 20 years ago. Towns been dying a death since the initial plans were put into place. It's half the reason the retail park ended up as populated as it is. High Speed 2 getting canned has pretty much doomed the place. Spent a couple of years living in Macc recently and aside from the random hilly elevation it really did give me the feeling of what Crewe was like when I was a kid. Especially that market day they host there one sunday every month.
Interesting point that many don’t know, some of the very early work on optical fibres was done at the Crewe Mechanics Institute ~100 or so years ago predating computers by several decades. It continued at British Rail.
I grew up in Crewe, damn shame what it's turned into. I was a young person in the 90's, it was a lively place, good nightlife (including the much missed Limelight Club) and a fine shopping centre. Haven't been back in a few years, sad to see what it's turned into.
The open space where the new carpark is. Originally was going to have. A cinema. And bowling alley. There But Cheshire east council say now it is going to be an open green space with trees and seats ect. The new bus station is already open and is tiny .
Mark the council was supposed to build a mall type of shopping area where the space next to the car park is the bus station is on the left side of the new useless carpark Crewe has been decimated over the last few years such a dull place to be theses days but with a bent council paying for a stand in boss at around £1600 a day this is the shite the public has to put up with.
I live in Crewe and let me tell you it's a dead town no town center to speak of just one big open space M&S has gone. What we have now is barber shops vape shops as for the market well that went the way of the dodo give Crewe a miss go the little town of Nantwich it's beautiful and plenty of independent shops and cafes.
Just to let viewers and the uploader of this content about my hometown of Crewe. The multi story carpark you see was going to be part of a bigger construction like most towns its costs spiralled then we lost HS2 so the investment for the new shopping centre dried up so basically what use to be there where the waste ground is was the old town with the historic clock that they bulldozed by the council But the real sad embarrassing irony is they flattened it all for nothing they ran out of cash after the carpark and bus station so it will stay as it is now probably forever so hard to be proud of such a rundown place nearly every shop is closed there are homeless everywhere drugs are rife & the legal immigrants are in every other home it's probably one of the worst most deprived towns in England the council is filing for bankruptcy so hard to get heads around what's happened because unless you live in London or around that area everywhere is in poverty 👌

'Open green space' means that there is no money basically. 'Nothing we can think of to put here will be economically viable.'
Was this filmed today?
I filmed this last week 🙂
