  • It's the height of lambing season on the farm! We have so many lambs on the ground and only so much time and energy to keep everybody healthy! In this video Jeff will update you on how we are dealing with the large numbers of lambs and ways wo try to ensure high mortality!

    I was wondering about the breed of sheep 🐑 too. Odd how genetically black sheep just appear. The barn looks like Sandi Brock’s.

      These are Rideau Arcott breed. The barn is much smaller than Sandi Brocks. I would call hers a Taj Mahal compared to mine. But it does the trick and makes for nice bright working environment.

    You are certainly doing a great job there, lots of healthy young lambs, not much sleep these nights 😀, when do you get them out to grass?, or do you?. Good luck with the rest of them. From all in Ireland 🇮🇪.

      We won't have grass again until the middle of April early May.

    I like your operation of the sheep farm, and definitely look very healthy lambs. I have a few questions if you may:
    I am thinking to start sheep farm and lambing, do you sell young ewes and rams? If so, what is the youngest age you sell?, how much?

      Thank-you for your interest! First of all where are you located? I'm in Ontario, Canada.

      Yes, i do sell breeding stock but never to the USA. I'm not sure if that can be done or not to cross the border with them. I am asking $400 per head for 100 lb ewe lamb.

    On average how many lambs do we get per ewe per lambing? Also about how many square feet do you figure for one ewe? Thanks in advance

    Good work right there. When adopting a lamb to new mum, do you have any procedures like smearing real lamb with the foster lamb for same smell to allow the new mum to accept ?, or in your case most of them simply accept right away?

    • @valleyridgefarms
      @valleyridgefarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I wouldn't say that it is easy to get mum to accept. The biggest thing is to give her the lamb while she is still in labor as her hormones are in overdrive. Also, we definitely do smear the fluids etc. from the mom on the lamb to be fostered to encourage her to lick it and identify it as her own.

      Our goal is 3 per ewe per year, about 2- 2.5 lambs per lambing per ewe. Squ ft for a ewe with lambs is about 25, without lambs 18-20.
