The A/C thing is just from flooring it, not tied to pursuit mode directly. i.e. I can floor it and have the A/C kick off but not have pursuit mode activated (when I get off, it does not keep the revs up). Though the thing about the turns I have noticed after I made this video. If I hook a turn it get triggered, but wasn't sure if it was just because the braking before the turn.. I do believe you are right that it can be triggered by turning alone.
I’m glad I came across this video. I have a 2016 police utility and had to slam on my breaks on the highway today because of traffic entering too slow. When I got back on the gas lightly, it was screaming in high RPMs and I was genuinely confused for a minute but figured it was some sort of interceptor feature to have power ready. Thank you for helping me clear that up.
Just so you know, if you wanna make this transmission simulate pursuit mode manually, put the transmission in the low range(the button on the end of the shifter)I've got videos of my car on my channel in several situations and even on a race track that I run the car well over a 100 miles an hour in the low range which is basically a manual selection of the same features as to pursuit mode. P.S. When you do this for the 1st time it's gonna be really nerve wracking because your thinking that the car is not going to upshift but trust me if there's anything the Ford engineers did right they did it with the transmissions in these cars!!! Two of mine are 2015 Interceptor Sedan Twin Turbo Eco boost 3.5s and 1 of them is a 2014 3.7 and they both do the same thing flawlessly. Bonus Tip: One other little thing most people don't know.... is even though they have the foot brake parking brake with the push to release feature, If you push on the pedal while you're actually traveling down the road, the E- brake will not lock the pedal down unless the car is close to stationary(just like the trunk release won't work while moving)...... so you can literally do an E brake turn with the parking brake pedal without the fear of the parking brake being locked on after you've released it. A pretty cool feature if you ask me....... just don't ask me how I found these things out.🤫🚓💨
@@thegentlemenrat3727 Yeah it will shift a little before redline and then when you let off it will rev-match each year until you get down to a stop again.
I read in the manual and this guy is exactly right! This whole pursuit mode that this Guy in the video is talking about is just Fords engineering that is a learning transmission and it’s his car trying to keep the RPMs high because it’s a police interceptor. The transmissions trying to learn his driving techniques and how he drives so it keeps the best performance in the vehicle and he’s really jacking with it by doing what he’s doing. I personally own a 3.7 right now.
Does putting it into low gear also lower the amount of fuel going into the engine? This is common with engines when being stuck in mud and stuff for more torque. For the FPIU is it only when in first gear then for this matter?
I had a 2018 Explorer Limited rental, 3.5 n/a and FWD. Thing was beautiful, quick yet too much ride (and price of one like it) for me. I am considering a 3.7/awd PIU as a way cheaper alternative, just gotta make sure the internal water pump and PTU (power transfer unit) are in great shape.
Fords with DCT(dual clutch transmission) are able to do this by putting it in “sport” mode. When in sport mode it will downshift just by tapping the brake pedal. If you hit it hard sometimes it will downshift two gears. It will also downshift when you corner hard. Also it will hold gears longer and shift later and harder. Dual clutch was available in Focus and some Fusion 2012 and later. A lot of people hated these transmissions because they work differently than a torque converter and can be clumsy in parking lots and other low speed driving. Once you get used to it I think it’s great!! Another feature that Ford doesn’t want you to know about is it has launch mode ala Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti. Put it in sport mode (make damn sure you turn traction control off) put in manual first put your foot on the brake floor it( only goes to 3500 rpms) take your foot off the brake and it’s like dumping the clutch. Great fun if you’re renting or using someone else’s car. It’s tough on the clutch so don’t do it too much. I would try going into the settings on your vehicle and see if there is anything in there that you can change. (where you change lighting settings eat.)
I have a PI 2014 Sedan. I discovered on a closed coarse that aggressive braking sets off sport mode. It may take a few cycles. Pure abuse cycles even changed launch characteristics. Power-stop type brakes makes it switch faster. Wish it had a setting instead. Car rock's regardless.
Thank you for the video. I have not found many videos on the FPIU and just purchased 2 that I need to fix the back door handles and windows (which i did find the video to plug the cable back in) I also want to find a nice looking or Explorer Center Console to replace the plate. I see that the normal Explorers have a Terrain knob on the center console to select the Terran Management System. (TMS) and don't know if it can be added to the FPIU version or not. Normal, Mud/Rut, Sand, and Snow with a Hill Descent button that works along with the Intelligent Four Wheel Drive system I appreciate your dual-video shot where you explain and show the dash with the same sequence. Scares the crap outta ppl too..😉👍 edit: Now my only issue is I don't have power to any of my power ports.. I heard from a few people that they get unhooked because they aren't used.. Now I have to take apart my console to hook them back up.. Just haven't had any time..
I discovered this by accident with my 2014 Taurus interceptor. I had to hit my brakes hard to avoid hitting a deer doing 55-65 mph highway speed. When I continued to drive at about 30-40 mph it seemed like it downshifted to first or second gear. I thought my fluid was low or something, but it was at normal capacity. Now I'm glad there's a good explanation and not that the tranny has issues. It works perfectly otherwise
The activation methodology sounds exactly like the "Performance Shift Mode" on the GM/Chevy versions of the Ford transmissions, and the results are almost exactly the same. Doesn't sound too different from Sport mode either. My Fusion Sport in Sport Mode will revmatch all of the downshifts while braking hard into a corner, keeps the gear around the corner, etc... The SHO and Explorer Sport Modes didn't seem to have the revmatched downshifts as aggressively as the Fusion Sport.

“Pursuit mode” as you call it, can be easily turned on, on ANY Ford by simply using FORScan. I believe it just prevents torque converter lockup. Most cars up shift as you come to a stoplight to prevent wear and tear on the transmission. By enabling this feature, the car will down shift when slowing down. The same premise as you demonstrated.
Sorry but 1: did you even watch the video, and 2: do you know what torque converter lockup is? Why would any car upshift when you come to a stop? It downshifts as you slow down so when you step on the gas it's in an appropriately smooth and comfort-minded gear for the speed you are going. In pursuit mode, it downshifts aggressively to keep the engine in the powerband even if you are decelerating instead of the relatively low RPM just above idle. Nothing to do with TC lockup.
I love just about any version of the interceptors. I've got one of the older P71's and she's still strong! Seems like I've had lots of younger guys, driving those loud diesel burner pickup's wanting to try me lately. Some were bad losers & got a case of the sore ass towards me, at pay up time. If you are talking about the C shamed "halo", I'm 95% certain the answer is no. I looked at the headlight assembly and could not find any connections or wiring that looked like it wasn't hooked up. I don't think there's anything in there.
I have a rather heavy foot and I get about 17-18. On long trips just cruising at 75, get about 20. Not sure what the actual rating is.I looked in the brochure and it's not listed.
Very cool. My 2012 chevy impala LT also knows when to shift. No Bogging. Always responsive. Even though I don't retain this special feature that this ford does. None of the ppv impala have a pursuit mode but they do very well as far as transmission goes.
Just two independently re-settable trip meters. Like you could reset one when you get gas and it will track how many miles you went before your next fillup.
yup. it wasn't fun. The three botls on each side that connect the bumper cover to the fender are a real pain. It would be easy if you could take the headlights out first, but you cant even do that without remove the bumper cover. I got a 1/4" drive socket and long extension down from the top through the tiny hole between the headlight and the tip of the fender.
So I have a 2014 3.7 PIU and i’ve had to hit the brakes hard a few times due to stupidity in front of me on the highway a couple times. The only thing is, when I hit the brakes it’s almost like the transmission gets stuck at a certain rpm. I’ll be moving at about 15mph and it sounds the same as if you hit the gas a bit while in Park. It’s just revving unusually high. The only way to make it stop is to hit the gas until the rpm passes the point at which it’s “stuck” and I guess it shifts and continues as normal. What exactly is going on??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
This is pursuit mode. If you just hold the RPM, it will eventually go back to normal. If you were in a situation where you were driving it hard (like in a pursuit), it would downshift for you keeping the RPMS up so that it's ready for for you to get on the gas again.. Normally if you slow down, the transmission doesn't downshift until you are almost stopped.
turbo2ltr ok good to know. I’ve had it where it was stuck there for more than 10 seconds until I sped up. Just wanted to be sure it wasn’t something that was a precursor to the transmission failing!
@@mastercfromhalo3 yeah it seems to have varying degrees of 'severity'...I've found it comes out of pursuit mode pretty quickly sometimes, and others it will just say there for a while. Not really sure what factors are at play though..
You can't buy the new from a dealer unless you are an agency so it's hard to find one that isn't a high mileage beaten up ex cop car. But if you are patient and willing to travel, you can find them. perfect. that is not too bad. How about reliability? Any issues so far? I would imagine you got a full record book of services and repairs by PD. Did they had to do any major repairs before you? thanks for replying.
My 2015 civilian-spec Explorer does it, too. Standard-mode AWD, driving it gently, it shifts slightly below 3000 rpm usually. Mud mode a bit higher. I mashed it like you're showing, and it woke up, holding two or three shifts until nearly 6000 rpm. I am thinking my car is secretly an under-cover PIU, or you have discovered the trans' "passing" programming.
your civilian explorer will hold until 6 yeah but the police package 3.7 will Rev to 7000 before it considers shifting or holding My 13' Interceptor Sedan has pursuit mode as well.
I know this is from 18 LOL but have you ever heard of departments melting turbo's due to excessive EGT's? I can only imagine the trans temps I know they have a cooler in the radiator.
Amazing video! I've been waiting for a video with the explorer lol. I soon will have to redo all my lights for fire responses and am having a tough time finding lights I like and that give enough coverage while I am one a college budget.
There’s an L button at the end of your gear shift handle and that is how you manually put it in pursuit mode. This feature has been available since 2011 ford police utility vehicles.
Sorry, the L is for "LOW" as in low gear. It will hold a gear even part throttle to redline, but it does not act the same as pursuit mode, especially on deceleration.
So... Police pursuit mode. I use it. In real life. It's sucks. When I need to accelerate it stays in the low gear too long and I can't properly accelerate to catch up to the bad guy. Make the mode manual instead of automatic. I wanna be able to turn that shit on and off as I need it. By the way, the reason you couldn't activate it, it wants you to steer aggressively as well. If you aren't steering aggressively it doesn't work. Yours should have had a little light come on to tell you, you were in pursuit mode (unless it's really old)
wow, i hit the subscribe button and i was prompted to unsubscribe, luckily i have only had one drink. no worries bud, you posted this because you are smarter than you look!

I don't get the cop question? People purchase used police vehicles all the time. I carry a firearm. Do I need to be a cop? No, it's a right. The purpose in most cases the brakes, suspension, engine or better/high performance. So you get factory performance at a better price. It's really not that hard to understand.
@@electroniccheeks yeah but people refuse to Read and dont realize you can get performance for at the cost of creature comforts. I.E. Stiffer body, bigger(MUCH bigger) Brakes, Harder suspension, and a better transmission tune. you just sacrifice, automatic lights, leather/heated seats, carpeting, a center console... well theres a lot. but for people who like to drive, and throw cars around corners hard. I have a rather heavy foot and I get about 17-18. On long trips just cruising at 75, get about 20. Not sure what the actual rating is.I looked in the brochure and it's not listed.
I get about 13 or 14 outta mine mainly city driving and heavy foot
Very cool. My 2012 chevy impala LT also knows when to shift. No Bogging. Always responsive. Even though I don't retain this special feature that this ford does. None of the ppv impala have a pursuit mode but they do very well as far as transmission goes.
Question: What is the "Trip 1" and the "Trip 2" for?
Just two independently re-settable trip meters. Like you could reset one when you get gas and it will track how many miles you went before your next fillup.
Ohh, I understand, I only had that little doubt, thank you very much good man.
I'm considering one - can you tell me if there are any forums available?? I'm looking for more information before I commit.
This is the one I usually go to.. www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?forums/ford-explorer-police-interceptor-utility-piu.188/
I have a question about removing the grille on my 2016 ford explorer police interceptor utility... dies the entire front have to come off?
yup. it wasn't fun.
@@turbo2ltr thanks. That's what I thought when I started to take the bolts from the grille off and noticed it wasn't budging...
2018 regular Explorer 3.5 does the exact same thing. It's not a police only thing.
It’s kinda like tow mode and overdrive mode mixed together
I think I am going to purchase one. I have a choice between 90k to 125k mikes. Any pointers would be appreciated.
Love the video.
Changing the water pump costs well over $1.5k. Make sure it was done before you buy it or start saving for when it goes.
the xlt also has that feature
Specially programmed glass transmission. Our local police department has constant issues with those POS transmissions. Sell it while it still runs.
Can you buy FPIU from a ford dealer? Or do you have to go a different route?
You can't buy the new from a dealer unless you are an agency so it's hard to find one that isn't a high mileage beaten up ex cop car. But if you are patient and willing to travel, you can find them. I had to fly from Phoenix to Kansas to get this one,, but it was basically brand new so it was worth it.
My 2016 Taurus police interceptor does all that lets the gears wind out without having to do anything special. Just get on it.
what is MPG you are getting on it with normal driving? (no pursuit mode ;-) )
17-18. But I drive far from normal. Normal person would probably get closer to 20
perfect. that is not too bad. How about reliability? Any issues so far? I would imagine you got a full record book of services and repairs by PD. Did they had to do any major repairs before you? thanks for replying.
@@artm1686 I bought it new. No huge problems yet. Most of the issues are build quality issue.
Can you elaborate on that please? What kind of build quality issues have you run into? Thanks for your video
It's just a sport mode. They call it pursuit mode here.
Is this 3.5 naturally aspirated or twin turbo?
3.7 NA. Interceptors don't come with the 3.5 NA
turbo2ltr My 15 has the 3.5 EcoBoost. Full legit interceptor identical to yours with push bar.
Keep hittin the brakes hard
Now floor it
Now hit brakes real hard
Now punch it again
REPEAT REPEATEDLY
My 13 fusion did the same thing it's sport mode
I know this is from 18 LOL but have you ever heard of departments melting turbo's due to excessive EGT's? I can only imagine the trans temps I know they have a cooler in the radiator.
Awesome job
Your car is really cool fpiu ?
Amazing video! I've been waiting for a video with the explorer lol. I soon will have to redo all my lights for fire responses and am having a tough time finding lights I like and that give enough coverage while I am one a college budget.
Willy Bear look into Strobesnmore.... amazing lights for the price. They rival Whelen TBH.
Sweet
What year is it ?
Have you driven the dodge charger -
PURSUIT ?
omg got to try that car.
That car would catch 99% of most cars.
It's a 2016, see my other videos. I have not driven the charger. I didn't buy mine to chase people. :)
So its sport mode on steroids or just the interceptors version of sport mode?
What’s it do?
Sweet Explorer
So it’s basically tow haul mode
There’s an L button at the end of your gear shift handle and that is how you manually put it in pursuit mode. This feature has been available since 2011 ford police utility vehicles.
Sorry, the L is for "LOW" as in low gear. It will hold a gear even part throttle to redline, but it does not act the same as pursuit mode, especially on deceleration.
I thought the L was for low range...
I thought the police interceptors would be good with the Transmissions are horrible
And it's not just my vehicle even when I drive other people's it's horrible and that's for the 2017 model and 2018. Super disappointed
It is when you have a tune and a Mopar pull up beside you growling
Yours should have had a little light come on to tell you, you were in pursuit mode (unless it's really old)
Mine would stay in it
Greetings fellow perpetrators
It's pretty much trailer mode on a truck.
Umm 🤔 no it's not
Well I didact that you're correct My apologies
wow, i hit the subscribe button and i was prompted to unsubscribe, luckily i have only had one drink. no worries bud, you posted this because you are smarter than you look!
By the looks of that sentence, I'm pretty sure you've had more than one.. :)
lol - pursuit mode! The comical BS that people imagineer about these mundane vehicles, and then attribute to "ooooo, super-cool radical police car sh!t..."
are you even a cop though? Whats with the lights?
Please read the description.
Cop Cars offer Excellent options for spirited driving.
