      He worked out the succession by:
      1) Raising his second-born son to be ambitious and incredibly good at intrigue, but giving him no land, wife, or church titles to pacify him, thus pretty much guaranteeing that he will dedicate his life to murder plots.
      2) Letting the Empire elect his mediocre theologian brother who has one piss poor child and isn't actually the right religion
      3) Letting the bulk of his own landed titles be inherited by his eldest son, who is married to probably his strongest vassal, and then massively pissing said son off by revoking all of them as soon as Joseph took over.
      I'm sure that ALL of these things will be VERY conducive to calm, peaceful governance in the coming years of Joseph's reign.

    The history books in this modern world would be really funny;
    This is emperor Kellistos. He is often viewed as a great king who turned mad towards the end of his life. He defeated Catholicism in a crusade nearly singlehandedly, which he was later in life. He brought Bulgaria in to the empire for the first time in many centuries. However, he formed many bastards in his youth along with all his true children all of whom he paid little attention to. Furthermore he created a strange Hellenic revival cult that immediately failed and fell apart within a week after his death. Speaking of which....Kellistos has a very remarkable death. As a worrier he gained an infection, but it healed. Then he had cancer. But it was stopped with bees. Strangely the next time bees were used on him it went disastrously and nearly killed him. Soon after he died to all kinds of mistreatment

    Jon, the child rearing event where it says "Has chance to become X" and "Loses the trait childhood trait X / Gains the trait X" actually always gets rid of the childhood trait and if the first chance doesn't work, then it gives the child the trait from the second one. There are no dice rolls included with the second choice. So there was no danger for Carlo to become dull even if you'd picked Brave.

    On this week's episode of "Let's talk about the things Jon got wrong": Retinue composition!
    Generally speaking retinue's are incredibly powerful in CK2 because they make it easy to control the tactic your generals get to use in combat by having a very specific troop composition. Hence rule number 1 of effective retinue use is to never ever mix several ones together (except a pure cultural one with one of the generic retinues to get a better percentage of trooptype A vs trooptype B to get better tactics). Whilst this is indeed very much nitty gritty nerdy stuff, it may be worth looking into because it greatly improves the effective power of your retinues.
    Apart from that, keep up the amazing content Jon! You're an absolute lifesaver in the current situation.

    What makes Perun the wise so great is not because of his struggle childhood focus, but the education and war focus makes him both an excellent diplomat and an excellent fighter at the same time. The rulers after him, are either did not receive a good education by assigning appropriate guardian; or does not being tested in the field because all they did was hunting stags and too cowardly engage in battles despite of war focus. All of the good rulers that Jon had, are all accidentally good but not by design, which I found amusing.

  • @thehulkster9434

    Just a note - the Byzantine emperor has some limmitations on usurping titles, I believe it is duchies only, they cannot usurp kingdoms or empires. The game doesn't list that as the reason, but that is the problem, Byzantine imperial government type cannot usurp kingdoms.

    Jon, a warrior leader that raids weaker nearby lands really fixes some monetary problems.
    You can also raid far off lands if you see that they are the primary title of someone who has an item you want, you might get the cool item if you're lucky.
    Also, viceroyalty! Get those kingdoms back, literally all of them, one at a time and give them to brilliant peasants who are already secretly in your hellinistic cult as a viceroyalty. Very good 👌🏼

    The option in the childhood trait event that has a chance vs definitely removing one and getting the other is as simple as it looks.
    The child will get honest in that case, you try to make him brave instead, but if you fail he just becomes honest. At that stage the chance of the other trait is gone it's just between those two at that point.
    It give the AI a chance to try and make children better or purposefully worse.

  • @BillySnuggles
    @BillySnuggles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Jon- I think there's a bug with the "Imperial" government type; the game thinks you're a Merchant Republic... *sometimes*
    So title usurpation can get really funky.
    And an option for converting- You can spread your unreformed paganism by taking your vassals' heirs under your Guardianship and putting them on a Heritage Focus. The parent might refuse, but if they don't, boom, fresh Hellenic person.
    (You might then have to kill their parent to make sure they don't get asked to convert back)

  • @KahaniKhalifa
    @KahaniKhalifa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Jon, the coming of age event that confuses you is basically just a choice of two options. The bottom one, which for Carlo was to become honest, tells you what is going to happen if you don't do anything. The top option, which for Carlo was a chance of being brave, gives you a chance of that happening instead of the other one. So if you pick brave and it doesn't happen, he'd become honest anyway. So it's not that some unlisted thing just randomly happens sometimes, it's one thing is guaranteed unless you intervene, and might still happen anyway even if you do. You didn't need to worry that he could become dull, because that was already the education event firing and it had already decided it was either honest or brave.
    Also, you need to stop thinking people are Satanic. Possessed is just what they thought was wrong with mentally ill people back then. People with the possessed trait are most likely schizophrenic or bipolar. Actually having any involvement with the Satanic society is extremely rare. Just because CK2 allows occasional supernatural things to happen if you have the right DLC and options enabled, that doesn't mean very common traits must always be supernatural. As a flavour thing it might not matter, but if you keep thinking people are involved with societies you're going to get tripped up sooner or later.

    Jon, have you considered using Byzantium's crown authority to literally boot every single person from every single position then starting from scratch with entirely new hellenic summoned vessels?

    The reason the Roman names are used is because you are not Greek. You are Roman.
    It is in the name: Eastern Roman Empire.
    Your people see themselves as the Romans of old.

    Does anyone know/remember what Jon said about which DLCs are "essential" for CK2?

    • @TheGamegurusChannel
      @TheGamegurusChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on which region you want to play. Sword of Islam isn't really needed, for example, if you aren't planning on playing as a Muslim king.

    • @alexisauld7781
      @alexisauld7781 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Way of Life is essential, Sword of Islam and Holy Fury help the Muslim and Pagan regions of the world to not entirely be snoozefests, Monks and Mystics adds a good bit of flavour. Jade Dragon adds some slightly overpowered mechanics but they help the game be a bit more dynamic. The Reapers Due makes disease, etc mean something. Conclave really just adds bureaucracy, so not to my taste but might be to yours. :)

    • @VampireofEmotion
      @VampireofEmotion 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically all but sunset invasion, jade dragon, and horse lords
      Though it depends on your style, some people dig playing nomads etc

    • @joshuabowers
      @joshuabowers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can afford them all, each of them-even Sunset Invasion-adds new and interesting mechanics to the game. Some of them aren’t strictly speaking relevant for every campaign: Republic, for example, only really matters if you want to play a merchant republic. To more directly answer your exact question, I believe Jon said he’s running everything except Sunset Invasion and Jade Dragon. (JD has a lot of fun interaction mechanics with China, offers useful artifacts and holding upgrades, brings in new CBs. Worth taking a look.)

      @WilliamTheConquerer This game was never meant to be historically accurate... How boring would that be? In ck2 you can marry and become an immortal horse or play as a dragon, Aztec invaders are no worse.

    All serious Ck2 players hate it when their vassals attack nomad territory because they will just lose it if they dont stamp down castles that they wont get themselves.
