A new report reveals more details about the high-profile real-estate scam that has rocked Vietnam. Real-estate tycoon Truong My Lan was convicted of embezzling $12.5 Billion and sentenced to death last week. She embezzled this money over the course of a decade. It was possible because the real-estate mogul owned about 90% of the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank, or SCB. Lan could not legally own that much of the bank, so she used proxies to consolidate her control. And then the bank defrauded customers and gave loans to Lan. Now it turns out that after arresting Lan in 2022, Vietnam's government took over the bank and secretly poured in $24 Billion to protect its customers.

That is only half of the story. Why was the government distributing taxpayers' money without informing the public, and what about the recovered assets? Did the funds taken from the bank disappear? That woman should not be executed until all the money is recovered, and the trial must be made public to allow the public to hear her side of the story. Not because she is innocent, but to ensure that her loot is not stolen by the same government.

So if it was a real estate business, she may have actually developed a lot of high rises, but kept a portion for herself and her accomplices. If those building still exist, couldn't they be sold? Or, if the projects were housing units, don't people pay rent or a price to buy them? In a way, that provided more Vietnamese housing, right? But I don't know the real circumstances. It is possible she is just a scapegoat for officials. You never know because if so, this fact will not be revealed in the trials. Was she even allowed to have a lawyer???

If the depositors' money in the bank was routed to Lan's company through purchase of her real estate company's bonds, their money was still backed by assets. Lan's company, I believe, wasn't bankrupt, or in that case, wasn't even loss making. Ideally, the assets should have been liquidated and the depositors should have been reimbursed with their money. I totally do agree that it was unlawful to make the depositors buy bonds in a company, sans their knowledge and consent. But on the part of the government, an enforcement of ethical business practices and a display of strict surveillance and regulation by cracking a whip on Lan resulted in the splurging of USD 24 bn, which is money, that belonged to the people..

It is a wonderful and beautiful country with lovely people. I served there in the "American war" ( I am a Aussie 🇦🇺) I have revisited VietNam several times since and the people are getting on with life and not pointing the finger at those of us who served there, in fact we have been welcomed. Many are only too happy to point out some officials as being corrupt, but seem helpless to do anyting about it and accept it as a way of life. I am confident that we in Aussie too are subject to corruption , however it is well hidden and concealed or glossed over by officials and probably not on the scale of that in VietNam. However people should not be put off visiting the country as people are lovely and the Government is doing its best to tackle the problem as it causes distrust of the Communist Party. We are revisiting again later this year as the country, people . prices, service and food are amazing !!👍🇻🇳

The govt banned her from travelling abroad when the investigation started. More than 80 officials from low to high rank had been arrested and the investigation is still ongoing on. After so many cases that the defendants ran away to Europe and America, VN govt had put a really strict controlling over big businessmen and govt officials in the matter of going abroad.
