When I think of Obama, Aris, and sometimes even Viscant on commentary. I classify them as story tellers, which I guess that title has evolved into lore based commentators?
Obama is a “color commentator”. He provides context for the match during lulls, and has wnough knowledge to remark on some of the specifics on analysis.
I died when you broke down the Steve dip. At first I wasn't sure where it was going, talking up the dude's analysis, then the dip happened and it all made sense
James Chen tells you what's happening on the screen. UltraDavid tells you what's happening in the game on a mechanical level Sajam tells you what a player was thinking on a meta level Seth Killian tells you what players were feeling in the moment
Obama has the enturely underappreciated and underrepresented role as a storyteller. I can think of no one in the scene who goes as hard into building up storylines and out-of-match context for why certain players or even player MUs are so interesting. Would love to see more of that.
