Hi Jess, keep these wonderful videos coming. This is not my favorite episode. It is very heavy and I skip it sometimes on my re-watches.
With that said, it is a good episode. We all handle death differently. Sometimes we fear our death, and other times we fear the death of loved one. It is all a lot to take in. please keep up with the videos as I’ve enjoyed them

My best friend has moved into stage five kidney failure. She's ten years younger than I am but will most likely pass years before I do.
She was in an horrifically abusive situation, I'm talking torture and terror. In the first year of the pandemic, her abuser was threatening to throw her out on the street. She would have lost her daughter to a father that is an absolute garbage human being who only used her daughter as a means to hurt and further torment my friend. I just couldn't let that happen. We talked and set about buying a home for her.
She's made remarkable progress in her recovery, she has a great therapist. She even fell in love, married, and made an incredibly loving home for them all. They live at the edge of a town across from a lake with quiet neighbors. She's given them and me some great years since she got out of that house of horrors. I've told her many times that the world is a better place with her in it, her daughter's, her husband's, their pitbull Bella's, and mine, all better with her in it. We all love her deeply. But she's not got that much time left without a donor and the state we live in is ridiculously cruel to the poor.
If we're lucky, she'll see her daughter graduate from college, maybe even get married, maybe even see a grandchild, but that's a long shot in this world.
I was a cruel person for a long time, nearly twenty years, I've spent the last 19 learning to be a decent person, she's been a huge part of that. I regret none of the sacrifices I made, nearly $100,000 on the down payment, repairs, renovations, and payments. Her well-being and a chance at the life she'd been robbed of from literal decades of abuse, was more important than the money. We all love her to tears, and no time in the world will be enough with her, yet we are all preparing to let her go, in our own way.
I'm pretty much grieving every day, knowing what may very well come in the next few years. Thankfully her daughter has a full scholarship, a great stepfather, and I vowed to do everything I can to look after her daughter.
It's still going to fucking hurt when it comes, and I'll forever be thankful for letting me be a part of her life and being a part of mine. She's made our world a brighter, better place. I can't undo the harm I've caused, but I can at least be laid to rest, knowing that I made a difference in her life, and the lives of a few others as well. I didn't know how deeply I could feel love until I met her, for that I will be forever grateful.

This episode really hits home and touches on a good theme: it's not hard to be dead. You're gone, that's it. You go to whatever afterlife you believe in, or you're just "done". But you know what's hard? Dying. And I think that's what most people are really afraid of. Not being dead, but the actual dying part. Maybe feeling pain, maybe leaving friends and loved ones behind, or just dying alone.
The way they deal with that in this episode makes it one of my favorite episodes of the series. A difficult subject with a well done realization.

My Dad died a couple weeks ago. I was grateful I could be there. He couldn’t speak but a couple of times he opened his eyes slightly and I think he heard me telling him I love him and thank you for being my father. He went the way JD said it happens. He also would have appreciated one last good thought - I hope he did hear me and I helped give him that - and he would have laughed at the human taxidermy bit. 😢

Was just wondering, since Scrubs is pretty old by now and medical science moves quickly, could it be possible that the surgical options mentioned at 1:20 didn't exist at the time? Or is 'ischemic bowel disease' just not specific enough in general to be able to say he's 'going soon'?

I'm not a lawyer but you ask good questions that make me curious; one of the reasons I've started watching some of your reactions.
It turns out that in the US certain court instances, like the supreme Court and the various Circuit Courts do have rules for at least some types of documents. Here's one example of a tidbit I found online: "The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit states that lawyers should avoid using Times New Roman so their audience will be less likely to scan legal briefs quickly without retaining the document’s contents."
There are also rules regarding legibility. A legal document must be possible to read without the font causing any confusion.
I also never considered, but serif fonts are apparently better for printed documents, while sans-serifs are better for screens. Not so much a rule, but a recommendation.

    • @djvWOODSTOCK
      @djvWOODSTOCK 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Lawyer here. Court submissions (like briefs) are different than wills. For starters, Circuit Courts are governed by federal law whereas wills and probate are governed by state law. Most states base their rules governing wills on the Uniform Probate Code. Many jurisdictions allow holographic wills (handwritten). Font shouldn't come into play as long as the language is unambiguous and it was executed properly. The only thing that might matter is someone contesting the will could use "squiggly font" to try and argue that what's written there isn't the legitimate intent of the decedent.

While working for a private ambulance service, we were called very early morning for one of our "frequent fliers" to be transported to the hospital. She said this time she was going to die, and she was pretty calm about it, but we remembered her saying that before. Long story short, she died before the day was out. Guess she had already made peace about it.

Father died peacefully. It looked like he was asleep on his side, just not breathing. Mom had it harder, lots of pain managed with heavy medication. You don't even need an ignition source with pure O2. I set my hands on fire with nothing but oxygen and apparently some hand cream that was high in fat content.
So if you are on oxygen, no lip balm or anything that contains fatty acids either. Remember to tell everyone that at every opportunity because rapid fat oxidisation literally means fire.
Get some high glycerol content lipbalm, I know in Sweden that is provided these days.
Oh and beard oil is even worse, it usually has quite a bit of essential oils in it (and for those that don't know, essential means highly reactive and flammable, that is literally what the word means when used in regard to these oils. It's also extremely toxic, more so than petrol or kerosene so do not ingest it, it will kill you).

Death feels like such an important event in our lives, so I can see the desire to have company for it. IMO, *living* alone is so much harder. Dying, ideally, is only a brief moment, perhaps not even one spent conscious.

@JaggerG, My best friend's husband got male breast cancer. It had already metastasized. He was in a lot of pain for a long time, before he died. 😣😣💔💔

@@cubnation My condolences. I take it he hadn't been suffering alone, at least.

@@JaggerG No his wife, who is my best friend, and his kids were there. Despite my baseball icon, I am a female. The whole thing was really shocking and sad, because nobody thinks of breast cancer in men, but there it was. 😞

When JD talked about knowing what he wants done with his remains, it reminded me of something. Do I need to have a legal document from a law firm? Some states are doing this thing where they turn your body into mulch. Can I legally say that's what I want even if I live in a state that doesn't do that? What about donating my body but also wanting a burial?

I am not sure if it’s state to state dependent… in my state, this is all stuff that needs to be in writing….

@JessTheMD a long time ago me and a friend decided we wanted to be stuffed. I wanted to be given jazz hands and put in a random stranger's living room 🤣

Not a lawyer, but you can donate your body to science and your ashes are returned a few months later (if you donated to a medical school, you helped train a doctor)

Superb episode as always Dr. Jess I loved it all. For the next one I would definitely recommend Season 6 Episode 4 "My House", it's really cool because it's partially inspired by House MD so its a two-in-one special! 😀👍❤
