I think the suspenders are the huge variable here. Matt Smith had suspenders too but they weren’t always on display unless he was running or he took his tweed-jacket off. Her coat could easily cover her suspenders most of the time depending on how it falls. This might just be them posing the outfit to show as much detail as possible, similar to how they flared up Capaldi’s coat to show the red inner-lining in his costume photo. All I know is, the longer I stare at it, the more it’s growing on me. What I’m wondering now is if she’ll ever have variations on the shirt. I think it could be pretty cool if, seeing as this shirt’s stripe is an homage to Tom Baker’s most iconic scarf, she could actually have different shirts that resemble his other scarves, like a black shirt with red stripes for instance. That could be kind of cool.
New British subscriber - a few miles from where Jodie originates actually - great/fair first impressions vid, mate! I have to say, I was a huge fan of Mork back In the day, but, until a few people mentioned it, it didn't even occur to me! In the U.K. we call those trousers: "Coulottes". Also...(slight awkward pause) in th U.K. we call what you call suspenders: "braces"; here suspenders are what hold stockings up and are often part of lingere sets!!!😇Oh, the English language; such a wonderful thing Lol, all the best, have a great weekend!😂😂😂
If you study the outfit you realize it's actually a serious nod to many of her predecessors. The striped shirt reminiscent of Tom Baker's scarf not a rainbow.
It just looks like they ripped the worst parts off the worst outfits. The coat looks like 5's cricket jacket (which is bland), the suspenders are reminiscent of 11 (and do NOT work with those pants), the random pops of color are reminiscent of 6's atrocious outfit...just a lot of "UGH" in one place.
If this gets modified and altered over time, ok. The Doctor should not have a 'costume', he or she should have a style. The Doctor's a Timelord, not a superhero.
The Doctor had a costume in every incarnation. In New Who it varies based on whether the story is set in the past or the future. Matt Smith's costume changed part way through, but it also changed. Also, I'd like to see the question marks return to a costume of the Doctor. It's silly, but I like it.
I'd argue that Three, Five, Six, Eight, possibly One and Two, maybe Eleven, and sometimes Twelve all had a "costume" more than a "style" from an outside perspective. To them? "What do you mean 'costume party?' This is my 'cool, around town' outfit."
Honestly, I'd say that Nine and Ten also had a clear 'costume', though you could argue that theirs looked more normal. Nine only ever changed his shirt, and Ten had two suits in total. Four had one too, though his scarf was different every time, and Seven absolutely did. As I said. Every doctor has a costume. Also, just because the Doctor is a time lord, he can't be a superhero? Racist! :P
klop422 Yeah the ones I didn't include were the ones that for the time and place the show was filmed in, you could really see them walk down the street and would outright say, "What?" But really the style/costume debate is mostly semantics. I'd say it's the Doctor's _style_ to be in something of a _costume._ Totally agree with you.
Honestly, I love her costume. For me, it ranks in the 2nd best Doctor outfit, sandwiched between the 4th Doctor and the 10th Doctor respectively. As someone who actually really loves the 13th Doctor's run, even if the writing isn't always there, it could not have been a better outfit. The coat is just plain cool, but the suspender and the long sleeve shirt is so dorky and adorable, like it fits the Doctor's playful, friendly personality.
When i first seen this look i was like "what, really?" But im over it. I'll wait till i see how this new regeneration behaves and learn about its personality. I like what Amy said in the girl who waited. "You see someone so beautiful and then when you hear them talk & they're as dull as a brick. Or you meet someone who looks ok and after you talk to them its like their personality changes their look into something beautiful." I really like that episode.
I love her pants. I've been wanting to experiment with pants lately (I'm a dress/skirt kind of person) and I hope that this kind of brings pants back a bit. I feel like the outfit says that she's not being held down by the darkness of her previous identities (through the use of colour compared especially to Capaldi) and that she's ready for adventure. The boots were made for walking (or running) and putting her foot down. Can't say I love the suspenders, but I can see how they add a bit of 'fun' to the look. The coat is also great, I feel like she could have any number of useful things hidden in there. It also feels cape-esque, like the Doctor is embracing her strength. I get a bit of a Tardis vibe from her through all the blue - blue shirt (I believe it's blue, correct me if I'm wrong), blue pants, blue socks. It makes me feel like the Doctor and the Tardis are very connected in a way they maybe haven't been for quite a while.
I do not like the pants myself only because it looks like they are regular pants that shrunk in the wash. but since you have a cool name I will let it go. LOL
I agree about digging the haphazardness of the costume. None of the pieces quite go together, but they also don't clash. It works for me. And I think it really works for the Doctor. I had the same thoughts about the potential juxtaposition between look and personality that the Sixth Doctor had. That would be very intriguing to go that route. I think I'd be into it. What I'm most curious to see though is, come December, how Jodie will look in Capaldi's outfit. That ought to be interesting.
I think the outfit is perfect for what there going to do with this incarnation, it’s fun and I can also see her giving a more serious turn as well it’s going to be an interesting series none the less
The high, short pants and suspenders remind me of Steve Urkel. This was not at all what I was picturing her in, something more in the direction of a blouse and blazer, following the trend of recent doctors wearing suits and ties, but that was forgetting that the Doctor's fashion sense is completely insane, and this is totally something she would throw together. It looks terrible, but that's kind of the point. It's growing on me.
I don't often do this, but I wanted to express my admiration for your Doctor Who videos, because they generally seem to be well thought out and they help me refine my own opinion. So thanks for that :)
Council of Geeks Seconded. Only recently found your channel and it's like chatting with a friend with similar interests rather than being talked at by an 'expert'
*"CLEEEAAVAGE"* lol My first though was "Mork but with hipster flair" but over the day, it wore on me, I wonder what her secondary variant outfits will be though.
There was one word that hit me and that was "whimsical." It looks like someone who won't take herself too seriously. I watched Mork and Mindy when it first aired and that wasn't my first thought. I saw the stripes and thought of Tom Baker's scarf. I was surprised you didn't mention those colors. On the whole I dig the outfit, picked by someone who in thousands of years, never picked out a women's outfit.
Kind of wish the colour of the coat was more vibrant, would stick the costume out as more of an iconic look but then again, Mcganns costume is fairly uniconic but he's my favourite doctor (big finish of course)
I'm glad you noticed the Mork thing too. My first reaction was "Mork's close don't fit, he was shorter than her". Of course due to the linguistic differences between UK and US, every time you referred to her wearing suspenders I thought "er, no she's not" since to us 'suspenders' are lingerie, we call those 'braces'. (as in the term 'belt & braces') Her look is a bit reminiscent of a brief fashion in the early 80s for young women to wear boots, short jeans and braces. Ah well, as long as she doesn't have an assistant called Mindy we'll be fine. Anyway, here clothes could change - that would be a new thing for Who. (Do Galifreans sweat?)
In my opinion she looks like a mixture of all the other doctors, the suspenders, the colors, and the long coat, and the boots. They remind me of Matt Smith(suspenders and boots), David Tennant (trench coat and blue pants), and Tom Baker ( the colors and mix matching). This is kind of my take before finishing the video, by looking at the costume, It looks like she as the Doctor is now trying to adjust to herself who she is now, compared to how she used to be throughout the years, as a new incarnation and as a woman.
This...could take some time. Boots: fine, love the blue socks. Good for running too. No heels, thank god... Pants: Uh, fine same color as socks so good I guess. Coat: Great! Hair: Great! Susenders/Shirt: Seperate, fine. Together...not digging it? Colors are fine, but suspenders, coat, and tshirt combo looks off. Coat and suspenders, fine. Coat and tshirt, fine. But all three looks off. That is my problem, a small one that I'll get over in time easily. Colors are fine, since many Doctors were colorful and I'm glad for a return to a colorfully loud Doctor for once rather than shades of black (9 & 12) and brown (10 & 11) clothes. It's weird. Almost alien...okay, and I'm fine with it now. Quickest turn around comment ever. I talked myself into liking it. 😂
I agree. I think if the pants were slightly more form fitting with cuffs and some pockets down the side would have made it look more ultilitatian would have fit with the boots and suspenders better. The pants currently look more dressy...and a bit too dressy for the long sweater and boots. I think more utilitarian or grungy style pants would still look good with suspenders.
Funny enough, I wasn't all that into 13's costume until the Mork comparison was pointed out to me. It may be nostalgia, but I got really excited imagining a more serious version of Mork as The Doctor. Mork was really nice and a lot of fun. Come on, lets go on an adventure with the lady Mork Doctor.
I like Colin's outfit too, just saying that is the weirdest of all Doctor costumes and I doubt any costume can top that. And it's a good defence if people claim Jodi's costume is ridicoulus.
I am so excited to see where they go with the 13th Doctor... really they have a clean slate that could really go anywhere. Such and awesome feeling for a fan. I love Whittaker's attitude in interviews, but that really is no indication of how the Doctor will be scripted.
My first thought was: she's so hipster (- and I love it!). This look follows the latest trends (at least in Italy); that blue is one of the most used colours for clothing right now. David Tennant used to wear Converse shoes so it's not the first time the Doctor wears something trendy. At the same time she looks a bit "over the top" like Matt Smith. I'd love to see a joke about the Doctor not knowing how to dress as a woman on Earth in the present. It may sound silly but it could bring to how she'll need to be taken seriously, not only by Doctor Who's fans but also by the other characters. Time Lords may not notice differences between Men and Women but other species and humans surely do. She looks strong and confident, I'm so looking forward for meeting her.
I also directly noticed the "colourfulness" of that outfit. Different from late Smith's and Capaldi's much darker outfits that were kinda showing all the darkness in their lives. And after what 12 says at the end of The Doctor Falls and all... The Doctor needed a drastic change (or staying the same 4ever). So it's cool like that. Seems like she doesn't carry all the pain on her and that's she's trying to move on. The outfit in itself... I like it. Except for the suspenders. I know I'm not necessarily the most fashioned girl (what's best than wearing a big, cosy Iron Maiden hoodie anyway?)... but for me that part doesn't work. Watch and see then 😄
I think it looks silly. And I hope that means the new Doctor is going to be silly. Maybe she'll even have a pocket full of Jelly Babies. Now I was wearing suspenders before Mork did, and I still wear them to this day. I don't see a Mork connection in this reveal at all, but I have seen other people mention it. If there is a connection, what does it mean? The Doctor is not a scout sent from another planet to report on humans -- there's no one for her to report to. So what will she do that Mork did?
To be honest I feel like this style is more original than her first look and number one the suspenders are different which is not copying 11 number 2 the coat is not copying 10 ok!! I like this 90s look its awesome and the tardis is really cool! I miss the little Saint John thing on the right though but I guess that was moffats thing I’m starting to warm up to 13 I only get mad when all the female fans bring up SJW which I hate
I see what your saying however for me just at a glance she looks like she's ripping off Mork. For the first time ever I'm glad robin Williams isn't around to see it.
Cool! I'm all for a female Doctor, but the way to talk to people who are wary of it isn't by insulting them, which will just put them off the show. Fans suck. I like the coat, but not really the pants or the suspenders. It doesn't really make a difference imo though. A costume is a costume and nothing more.
Something I like about the costume is that it feels like the doctor just ran into the dressing room of the tardis and through on the first six things she saw
I absolutely love Jodie's outfit as the 13th Doctor. Also the T.A.R.D.I.S. has a touch of green on it now which I also love. I can't wait to see her second series in 2020. Gah why do I have to wait a whole year to watch Doctor Who?!
There were at least a handful of people on Reddit wondering if she was wearing the pride flag but the overall consensus from what I saw was that she definitely isn't. Anybody who made derogatory comments about the possibility was immediately downvoted to hell from what I saw. So yeah I do think the fandom is behaving better than I thought they were. I think it might be because a lot of the people who were dead serious that they were done watching because of Jodie Whittaker's casting aren't paying attention anymore.
That would be nice, if the people who've decided they aren't watching anymore leave those of us who are alone. I will say, it's been a slightly less vitriolic response even from those who dislike it than I was expecting. There's still a few around, but it feels like less this time. Pleasant surprises.
Council of Geeks So it's OK that they alienated and pushed out a good chunk of the fan base and by extension ratings? I hope it's good and people come back, but it's not a good thing for the franchise that they left.
If people decided that the show was dead to them just because the Doctor is a woman, then Doctor Who was never a show for them. For god sake, diversity and inclusion have been parts of Doctor Who narratives for all of its existence. If people are mad at the show for walking the talk, then they shouldn't be missed...
The first reaction about the top from me was actually Tom Baker's scarf. I loved Mork and Mindy back in the day but until folks mentioned it, as a guy from the UK, didn't think of it.
I really had mixed feelings on the whole image at first, but now I actually quite like it. I would've liked if they would go more gender neutral with the trousers, but I still don't mind them. Like the long coat, at the T-shirt. After looking at TARDIS, I've come the quite like it too. It has 9/10's tint of blue mixed with the classic series blue. I just don't like the white plack has been changed back to black like the classic one.
Style wise, I like it. I really like the coat best of all. I don't think they're going to insist on the exact same clothes every episode. Tennant only had 2 suits in his run, but Smith had a few different but similar looks and Capaldi practically had a wardrobe to choose from. So I think we'll see some variation here as well and that'll be good.
I got a second doctor sort of vibe from her with a hint of the sixth, the coat reminded me of the fourth doctor, I guess culturally you'd see the resemblance from things across your side of the pond but the Mork thing never entered my mind until you mentioned it
When you look at this outfit, it's so reminiscent of the 4th Doctor. Even the outside of the Tardis is nearly identical to the 4th Doctor's. I really hope that's indicative of the personality and type of Doctor she will be. Tom Baker was amazing and we need a Doctor like him in the New Doctor Who era!
I wonder if they are trying to make this doctor look intentionally nerdy. The suspenders remind me not just of Mork but also Steve Urkel as well as early seasons Willow from Buffy.
The Doctor has a long history of looking quirky and nerdy. I mean 4 and his hat/scarf combo, 5 and his celery, 6 in his ridiculously flamboyant outfit, 7 and all the "?", 10 wearing glasses he didn't need, the whole 11 look... So, in short, yeah, I'd say it's probably intentional.
At first I wasn’t quite sure about her look. Probably because it was nothing like I was thinking off and I would have been absolutely fine with the long coat+hoodie look. Which was more darker colour-wise. But now I think I like it, after also seeing fan art and going ‘yeah, that could work.’ I’m also a fan of long coats so I’m also glad they kept that. Overall it reminds me of spring.
What I also noticed from the costume reveal was the county backdrop. It reminded me of her first reveal being in the middle of a forest. Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but I’m getting the impression of a calmer, more motherly Doctor with the Earthly imagery around her. Perhaps a departure from the more uptight 12 Doctor
The striped band across the new Doctor's shirt are in 4th Doctor colors, and the band + suspenders combo reminds me of how the very long 4th Doctor's scarf would be looped/draped around Tom Baker's neck & chest.
I like the look. I did see the Mork connection as well, but my biggest I guess knee jerk reaction was that it was so different from the previous Doctors. Not saying that’s bad. They definitely want to set Jodie’s Doctor apart from the rest. My favorite Doctor is 4 and I can see some similar elements in 13: the long coat, baggy pants, boots - Tom Baker wore boots at times depending on where the story was taking place - but she also has that same grin. It’s not specifically a 4th Doctor trait though he definitely nailed that mischievous grin when he knew he was about to have a fascinating adventure. To me that Smile 13 had after the regeneration definitely showed me that she was the Doctor. I’m eager to see her adventures!
The pants took some time to accept. The first word that popped into my head was "Hochwasserhosen", which conjures up images of ancient stooped men with trousers pulled up to their armpits. The suspenders strengthened this impression. The next thing that popped into my head upon considering the suspenders was the second doctor. He was one of my favorites. Anyway, I'm excited to see what take Whittaker and the writers have on the Doctor this time around.
No, you were spot on. THE FIRST thing I said in my head was, “Mork from Ork...” I showed my wife the picture too and her first words were, “She looks like Mork.” I pray to God she goes through as many costume changes as Capaldi did, because I don’t know how long I can take the “Mork” look seriously.
Peter Capaldi's look was channeling John Pertwee a bit (Three is my fav doctor) and that made sense as unlike the other modern doctors, he felt more disconnected, more alien. I love Peter Capaldi now too :)
My first reaction is that it harps heavily back to the original show, of course more after it started airing in color. Now nostalgia feeling and all and a true fan of all Doctor Who so I absolutely love the old stuff. It does kind of make me reserved to the thought of "will it work today"' those colors where great in the 70's and 80's, but not sure if it works today, however I think it will depend on how it comes out on screen compared to her performance.
I thought the stripes were more an overt callback to the 4th Doctor's Scarf (note the inclusion of gray, teal, rose pink, and dull yellow) and that the whole thing was meant as an overt mirror of the 4th Doctor in the same way Capaldi's outfit closely mirrored the Third, (and frankly as Matt Smith's look mirrored the 2nd Doctor with the rumpled bowtie, and to a certain extent, David Tennant mirrored the 1st Doctor's 3 piece suit). I'm also willing to bet money that the eventual 14th doctor goes with a white ensemble accented in red, black, and yellow a la Peter Davidson.
I agree - this outfit is is actually a great start for the bold new direction that the show is taking, but it doesn't quite go far enough - just add a bright orange wig with a big red foam-rubber nose and then it will be perfect!!!
Actually, another TH-camr mentioned that a lot of her costume harkens back to earlier Doctors. Matt Smith for example did wear chunky boots like those, AND high water pants, AND suspenders, though I cannot remember if he wore all three at the same time. The band of color across the chest is somewhat reminiscent of Tom Bakers scarf, and other Doctors have worn the long coat as well. Yes, the suspenders do remind me of Mork, but they also strongly remind me of Matt Smith.
I still wear braces (suspenders) on a daily basis, and I get some strange looks for it! So I have a dated fashion sense, what about it? In regard to the Doctor wearing them, I love how they completely don't match her trousers at all! Reminds me of the 2nd Doctor...
I like to think that she had to find clothes that fit her in the Tardis since the Doctor had never been a woman before she had to make do with the clothes she had at hand. She found trousers that fit her waist but were too long so she cut them down, the jacket was an old one from Tom Baker's days, the suspenders were from Matt Smith's days and the shirt was a forgotten piece of clothing from one of the female companions.
My only concern about this outfit is that it probably means that we won't have any episodes set in the past because the outfit is so out there. The thing that I like about the Doctor in a suit is that even with some of the weird touches I could believe that it could pass in a previous time period. But I don't know how this will play out and I'm happy to just be along for the ride.
Wow. Totally Mork. Can't believe that I didn't realise it. I knew instantly that I recognised the look but it didn't even strike me that it was something I wasn't remembering. But yeah; Mork, as soon as you said it, absolutely.
Really like the outfit. It's very cute, and reminiscent of previous Doctors. And I especially like the colours! It's quite fun. I've no problem with the trousers, I've similar style trousers in black. I'm really looking forward to the new series with 13!
I like the outfit especially after seeing the new official photos and the BTS photos taken by fans. Looks good to me. Wondering what sort of variations she'll have of the outfit as time/episodes go on. Change of shirt? Change of coat? Change of pants?
Get rid of the rainbow and change the colour of either the shirt or trousers (just one, not both, keep one blue) and lower the trouser suspension just a bit. Put some buttons on the t-shirt or change the t-shirt to a full button shirt. If you want to include the rainbow, make it a pin or ribbon on the Doctor's supenders or coat collar like the 5th Doctor's lettuce. These subtle changes should fix the entire outfit.
I love her style...I would wear it...if I was a future regeneration for The Doctor I would go with the same style as the 13th Doctor I just really love it...it’s casual but at the same time very practical
Tonight I saw a TV commercial showing a woman wearing an outfit nearly identical to the one Jodie Whittaker will wear. While it lacked the long coat, the outfit had the same type of culottes, shirt and suspenders as the Doctor. The greatest differences were the colors used, and shoes instead of boots. I like the overall look a lot.
Didn’t even know about the reveal for the 13th Doctor’s outfit. I like the outfit. People read way too much into those sort of things. Broadchurch was good, she was good in there. Did you re-record the sound track for this video? Looked like what you were talking about didn’t synch up.
My other thought on this is, look at when alien costumes are strange, but they work somehow. Quark and other Ferengi in DS9 and TNG have some very unusual looks, where the colors and patterns are strange, they almost but not quite clash, they manage to work together for an alien but conscious look. Neelix would be another example there. I also recall a TNG ep with a Ferengi on holiday on Risa with the equivalent of a tropical shirt and shorts. It looks odd, but it works well.
It's very colorful. It's the most colorful a modern doctor's ever been (which is why people are comparing it to Colin Baker, that and the long coat ). So yeah, I wonder what the artistic direction of the show will be. Cause New Who has a more 'sleek', modern sci-fi design with lots of whites and greys and very tame colors and her colorful costume would clash with a lot of that.
I think you should check out Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries on Netflix. When I watched that series a couple of months ago I really thought that the characteristics and personality of Miss Fisher could fit a female Doctor Who very well. She is confident, smart, funny, a little frank/intrusive and have a slight sexiness to her. I think it will be so much fun to have a female Doctor and I think both boys and girls will think she is very awesome.
I really would like to see a few episodes with the new Doctor to see what the character is like to know how this all goes. In terms of the outfit, I have the feeling a lot of people thought about Mork on first seeing the outfit. My one continuing thought about the costume is that this is the strongest break yet from what a classic Who costume designer referred to as the Doctor's Edwardian feel to the look (30 years in the TARDIS video). This most likely won't matter a huge amount in the end to me, but something I have been thinking about.
My reaction to the costume was similar to yours. I thought it was underwhelming when I first saw it but it is growing on me the more I look at it and seeing the fan arts of the costume also helped. I think this will indicate she will be a fun Doctor and complete opposite to Capaldi's Doctor at the beginning of his tenure (he mellowed down later on)
Since I don't know who Mork is, I didn't see that connection, the only thing I saw was that it's basically a cross between David Tennant (with the coat), Colin Baker (with the colourful innards of the outfit) and a touch of Capaldi seriousness. Only not in the pants area. Those are ridiculous. I couldn't understand whether those were a pair of pants or a dress. The costume gives me a slightly silly vibe that only comes out once the shell (the coat) is peeled. So that could be interesting if that's what she'll actually be like.
They probably shouldn't have gone full Classic Doctor Mashup when every new-Doctor up to now has had mostly suits or street clothes. War Doctor even had his Fallout Chic. Any 3-4 of the elements there might have worked better, e.g. drop just the suspenders, or drop just the coat, or keep all of it and give her more fitting shoes, etc.
Judging from the two trailers and a few publicity photos, it looks as though the 13th Doctor will change the color of her shirt from time to time, although the horizontal stripes always remain unchanged.
I’d like to start by mentioning that any kid who grew up as a fan of ABC’s 60’s Batman color pallet, as I did, would find the colors here interesting and restrained. I think the stripes might be an attempt to evoke a new dawn. Old enough to do so I did not see Mork here, but his costume was much busier with more contrast. Missing from this presentation is what the Doctor invariably adds to the costume often immediately whether it be a multicolored scarf that was insanely long, a vegetable, or a fez, I doubt this costume is done. Thanks for mentioning the hood, because that could lead to an indispensable amount of business and camouflage while still allowing for other camouflage, scarfs, veils, bee keeper hoods to be used over time. That the bottom part of the outfit and socks are TARDIS blue I think is no coincidence while the shirt and inner jacket are midnight blue might hint at a darker side underneath mediated my the medium tone under the jacket. I think the boots are a great touch and at minimum reflect a no nonsense approach to getting into the muck and perhaps kicking those who need it when necessary. But so much depends upon the performance. As an actor in an active role I would say this costume would be quite reassuring against mishaps while doing aggressive Doctor like stunts and avoid some of those shots that Elisabeth Slade might have regretted from a few episodes where she was left hanging as it were. As for the Female Doctor, I’m always optimistic about the series and while different characters ebb and flow among my personal favorites I’m rarely disappointed. Great review.
The suspenders are a reference to Patrick Troughton's suspenders, and the stripe on the shirt has the exact colors of Tom Baker's scarf. It's a scarf reference, not a Mork reference.
I honestly don’t don’t know why, but I’m in love with the outfit! Something about it just screams Doctor! I hope that they change it up a little bit sometimes (which they probably will) maybe by changing the shirt? Also I hope it takes less time than it took David Tennant, cause I’m pretty sure he only started wearing the blue suit in Series 3 if I’m correct?
When I initially saw this costume, my first thought was "Pragmatist". Which could be a very interesting take on the Doctor, to be honest.... But when you mentioned the background, and it being set in nature in particular, I must admit that it could also bring to mind something like a Forest Ranger -- though that's not quite the term I'm looking for. But, you know.... someone who's job involves hiking through nature a lot and who enjoys spending a lot of time there. Which could mean that we get away from London more often, which would be awesome!
Honestly I didn't see Mork till people pointed it out. The costume is growing on me. Still think the pants could be longer. Also the colors on the top are meant to alude to 4th Doctors scarf.
This look will take some getting used to, but I'm not against it. With his suit, the Tenth Doctor had this very "formal" style, and I've noticed with each regeneration, the Doctor has gotten more and more casual. The Twelfth Doctor, for example, had those nice coats, but he did things like wearing hoodies and t-shirts under them. This, at least in my estimation of going from formal to casual, seems like the next logical step; granted, it seems like a large leap. Also, the look kinda reminds me of 80s Doctor Who. In particular, I'm kinda getting a Colin Baker/ Sixth Doctor vibe from her look (which is fine. Anyone who knows me know Colin Baker is my favorite Doctor)
The difference between Colin's outfit and Jodie's outfit is, unlike Jodie's, the basic outfit for Colin is really good. When you break it down and remove the colors, it's just a standard suit: Jacket, Waistcoat, & Tie, but with a twist. For those who don't like it, all it needs is a recolor. Jodie's, on the other hand, is horrible. Nothing goes together, even when you break it down and remove the colors
I absolutely love the costume. It's very feminine without being female. I enjoy the subtle 'fun' colours, the emphasis on her curves because she is now a woman. I do want to cosplay this so bad!
Do they really? You know, in all my life, I never once realised that some people's opinions are different to others. Gee, thanks for enlightening me, man.
I'm a damn sight older'n you and I didn't instantly think 'Mork' when I saw her outfit; seriously don't think modern young folk would know who Mork was, let alone associate the new Doctor's outfit with his. I like the look - it's got that unconventional style that typifies most of the various incarnations/regenerations. Looking forward to seeing what the new interior looks like - y'know, ONE DAY, the Doctor is going to learn to step outside the TARDIS when about to regenerate so that the TARDIS doesn't get almost wrecked by excess regeneration energy :P
I did have a split second of Mork, which was not exactly encouraging. But more than that, there's a late 70s early 80s Stranger-Things-esque childlike vibe to her outfit. In fact, my other immediate was reaction was... Ernie & Bert (cool). Remarkably, it's still got gravitas though, which I think is important. The more I look at it, the more I love it. Can't wait for 13 to begin!
I couldn't get over the Mork from York look until I actually saw Jodie Whittaker in action as the doctor. Then the costume just fit perfectly with her character
My first thought was it looked like something Sarah Jane Smith might have worn in the 70s DW episodes. It makes sense if the Doctor is getting something from the Tardis wardrobe. Hey could have been worse, she could be wearing Sarah's Bright Yellow Overalls.....though I might like to she how she'd look in Leala's skins ;)
I watched Mork a lot as a kid (in reruns--I'm not that old). And I remember the character a lot. But the similarity did not in any way enter my mind when I saw the dhirt. I saw "fourth Doctor scarf reference." The only thing that felt off to me is the pant height and color, which suggests mom jeans.
I love the outfit, but it will really only work if she's either confused and muddled, or very alien and eccentric (more Tom Baker than Colin), and honestly my two doctors I wanted after Matt Smith were a grumpy old man and a slightly kooky woman in that order so it looks like I could be bang on with that prediction.
As a woman who is old enough to have seen MORK AND MINDY in its first run, I honestly didn't go there when I saw her costume. I DID think that (as a woman) suspenders could definitely chafe um...that area of my body ESPECIALLY when you are running, as the Doctor so often is. But, other than that, I thought it was cute, fun, and fairly easy to move in. I also like long coats on the Doctor, whatever gender He/She may be, but not heavy coats, because that slows you down with wind resistance - again, the "always running" thing.
Or shirts that reference other Doctors!
I find it interesting that Peter Capaldi wore his Doctor Who costume long before he was even cast as The Doctor.
Actually I do really like the suspenders.
Ok, I hate John Pertwee, but that sounds like a very, very good idea!
ME too! So excited now. Good point! I didn't from the character's point of view but that makes a lot of sense.
Stripes = 4th; Cream coat = 5th; Boots and suspenders = 11th;
The TARDIS is like the 4th Doctor's too.
Almost all of the original series Doctors wore suspenders ( braces). They may well have belonged to one of them.
Absolute garbage. Nods to previous doctor's outfits? Nonsense. Poor attempt to justify very poor costume design.
If this gets modified and altered over time, ok. The Doctor should not have a 'costume', he or she should have a style. The Doctor's a Timelord, not a superhero.
i totally agree
Well they are BOTH ladies now, sooo... ^.^
Notice how the TARDIS' front sign is black, hasn't been that way since the 1996 movie.
1996 had a dark blue sign the black sign was from the 60s and 70s
It's 100% Mork . Which makes 100% as an innocent alien, playful, impish. Sounds like a Doctor to me.
I think the outfit is perfect for what there going to do with this incarnation, it’s fun and I can also see her giving a more serious turn as well it’s going to be an interesting series none the less
It's horrible. Reminds me of that Lenny Henry sketch from the 80s.
I thought they were going for a Commodore 64 vibe; tan case, retro rainbow logo, bright blue screen.
Huh... that's not a bad read on it actually.
Hiccup Hufflepuff I know! I didn't like it a first but now I think it looks really cool!
I don't often do this, but I wanted to express my admiration for your Doctor Who videos, because they generally seem to be well thought out and they help me refine my own opinion. So thanks for that :)
Thank you for the support! Glad you enjoy my stuff.
Council of Geeks Seconded. Only recently found your channel and it's like chatting with a friend with similar interests rather than being talked at by an 'expert'
*"CLEEEAAVAGE"* lol
My first though was "Mork but with hipster flair" but over the day, it wore on me, I wonder what her secondary variant outfits will be though.
Just Watch It
It’s actually supposed to be a lavenderish color.
I love how you push EVERYTHING behind Doctor Who! Best Doctor Who channel on TH-cam!!
(as in the term 'belt & braces')
Her look is a bit reminiscent of a brief fashion in the early 80s for young women to wear boots, short jeans and braces.
Ah well, as long as she doesn't have an assistant called Mindy we'll be fine. Anyway, here clothes could change - that would be a new thing for Who. (Do Galifreans sweat?)
See in the US when I hear "braces" I think about the metal orthodontia I had in my mouth during high school to straighten my teeth.
Funny how that happens sometimes.
I hate the outfit, it looks more "Mork and Mindy" than Doctor Who. . .I actually prefer her "reveal" outfit to this one. . .
I didn't care for the shirt and suspenders at first but they've grown on me.
My first reaction was colin baker!
I was thinking more Sylvester McCoy in Time and the Rani
Colin Baker's was worse. And it's up to date, the most ridiculous outfit the Doctor has worn, but a good Doctor, certainly a good Doctor.
+timrob12 I actually liked Colin Baker's outfit. It's one of my favorite outfits The Doctor has worn. Smith, on the other hand...
I love Colin's coat I prefer it over Tennant and Eccleston's boring costumes
I'm just not feeling it. 😕
Neither am I.
When I see the strip across the shirt I think 4’s scarf.
Exactly.
To be honest I feel like this style is more original than her first look and number one the suspenders are different which is not copying 11 number 2 the coat is not copying 10 ok!!
I like this 90s look its awesome and the tardis is really cool! I miss the little Saint John thing on the right though but I guess that was moffats thing
I’m starting to warm up to 13 I only get mad when all the female fans bring up SJW which I hate
I see what your saying however for me just at a glance she looks like she's ripping off Mork. For the first time ever I'm glad robin Williams isn't around to see it.
Steven Strange RIP Robin Williams king of comedy
Crazy blue bird the saint John's ambulance badge came from the original TARDIS in 1963 with the first doctor. It's not Moffats thing
Crazy blue bird And the trousers make her look like a clown.
Cool! I'm all for a female Doctor, but the way to talk to people who are wary of it isn't by insulting them, which will just put them off the show. Fans suck.
I like the coat, but not really the pants or the suspenders. It doesn't really make a difference imo though. A costume is a costume and nothing more.
I honestly thought it was the Pride flag on her shirt at first, but then I noticed the colors. Looks fine. Not an amazing outfit, but fine.
@@elisabethcamirand9695 So diversity, just not diversity of thought.
Isnt the stripe on the chest a call back to the 4th doctors scarf?
I got a second doctor sort of vibe from her with a hint of the sixth, the coat reminded me of the fourth doctor, I guess culturally you'd see the resemblance from things across your side of the pond but the Mork thing never entered my mind until you mentioned it
When you look at this outfit, it's so reminiscent of the 4th Doctor. Even the outside of the Tardis is nearly identical to the 4th Doctor's. I really hope that's indicative of the personality and type of Doctor she will be. Tom Baker was amazing and we need a Doctor like him in the New Doctor Who era!
The whole part about coming around to the look because of the fan art is exactly what happened to me!
I find myself wondering what fans today would have thought seeing 2's "cosmic hobo" look for the first time.
Council of Geeks Jamie and his Kilt would have kept the fandom distracted
+Nat McC >"pure pandering to a certain audience."
...ohhhhhh... *now* I get it... the outfit's *not supposed* to appeal to non-SJWs... >_>
Mork and Mindy had a much lower profile here in the UK. The colours on the top possibly mirror the colours in the Fourth doctor's scarf.
Yeah, it's more of a US point of reference.
He also wore very high waisted pants.
Oh, I don't wear those, though. I get enough funny looks as it is!
Subbing. Love how you look at something from all directions and try to be open minded.
Personally, I love her outfit! It gives off a playful, fun and silly sort of vibe. Fingers crossed with get a personality to match!
Thanks for pointing us towards Jodie Whittaker Doctor Who fanart. Some of it's pretty seriously cool!
It looks like she's gonna be Tom Baker level mad, which is great for me.
Hey man. Just to say I love this channel. Bringing whovians together
I don't love the pants...and I think that's awesome. Having the outfit being slightly jarring seems perfectly Doctor to me.
I didn't like it much at first, but now I think it looks awesome! I can't wait for next year!
I like how they're keeping to the standing out clothing that the doctor always has.
She looks cool.
Pluto Guy88 Bruce PHOENEIX I agree , love this look...they pulling all the stops with Jodie...
or terrible
I'm not too fond of the suspenders, but I'm really digging the lilac coat!
Well, Colin Baker can say he didn't have the worst costume at long last.
I really don’t like it I preferred her costume in the reveal trailer
You mean the most bland and unoriginal thing the Doctor's ever worn? Yeah, that'd be great!
Ashbridge Industries It’s called an opinion. It might be hard to understand but people have different opinions.
same
Do they really? You know, in all my life, I never once realised that some people's opinions are different to others. Gee, thanks for enlightening me, man.
Ashbridge Industries It really isn’t that hard not to act like a dick. There’s enough problems in the world to get upset over a costume.
It's greeeeeeeeaaat!!!! Love it! Very cool and hip and looks comfy and stylish and easy to wear too :)
I saw "fourth Doctor scarf reference."
The only thing that felt off to me is the pant height and color, which suggests mom jeans.
