  • Dive deep into the intricacies of my reef tank's closed loop flow system in this comprehensive video. Join me as I share insights into the design process, demonstrate the flow dynamics with bubble visualization, and showcase the maintenance routine, including disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly. Witness firsthand the challenges I face, like a minor leak caused by a forgotten union tightening, and how I troubleshoot and resolve such issues. Whether you're a seasoned aquarist or a curious hobbyist, there's something to learn and enjoy in this journey through reef tank flow management. Really cool. Nice to see a smart OG system.

    In all my years of following reefing (and now a successful reef of my own), I'd never imagined running a closed loop OVER the tank. Brilliant!! 👍

      And this is my first closed loop ever. It just gives so much flow bc of the lack of head pressure

    Good info in this video. How did you mount the canopy over the tank? Is the tank holding all the weight of the canopy and lights? Thank you.

    • @AquariumSurge

      The front two corners are holding the weight and the back is bolted to the wall

    you could also pass a pipe or tube of a closed loop through the substrate

    • @AquariumSurge
      @AquariumSurge  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @andibandi1190 yeah I definitely could use some flow on the bottom. Only thing that's holding me back is I don't want to look at those pipes. Maybe ones things are grown in it won't matter

    Fantastic design and great to see it in action and what it consists of. 👍 Been planning a similar thing. Just about exactly like you have the pump below the water level in the back. However instead of this piping and outlets coming from on top i was thinking of having a pipe going inside the tank to the back and bottom and having multiple random flow generators blowing between rock bommies and behind them. Perhaps i go with your way of doing it. 🤔

    • @AquariumSurge
      @AquariumSurge  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, The way you mentioned is a good way too do it - aslong as you have the depth to make it work. However, after seeing mine in action it has no issues getting flow to the back everywhere in the tank. Plus I like the ability to customize it as needed. Also, not a fan of those random flow generators, there is no velocity that comes out of those and they reduce the flow same way as a valve does, I think just ramping the flow up and down is more the sufficient to get random flow.

    Nicely done Sir. Very much agree with your ideas on the powerheads in the tank. I plan to do a center tower overflow box and add similar outlets for the inline recirculating system on the center tower, the conceal everything with epoxied rocks to make the tower and water outlets look like little caves in the rockwork. I’m a big proponent of no visible pumps or tubes. Love this hobby for the creativity. Questions. Any issues with your overflow not pulling the surface film out as I’ve got a peninsula tank and if the powerheads pointed up they could drive the surface gunk away from the overflow box. Looks like you probably have so much agitation that it isn’t a problem.

    • @AquariumSurge
      @AquariumSurge  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It has no problem with removing junk from the top. I will say I did have to play around with the positions of the outlets to achieve this as initially I found the left side tend to build up surface gunk. I never have the seaswirls pointing at each other. When one is pointing at the back glass the other one is pointing towards the length of the tank. Aslong as you have options to play around with the outlets and everything is stiring crap will find the overflow or a dead spot on the rock
