Chris...with love...please please do not use a scrim of this size on C-stands outdoors. You really REALLY need combo stands + sandbags for a setup like this. The forces even a minor gust of wind puts on a sail of that size is massive and you will knock it over one day if it's on C-stands.
I'm with you. I am always worried when I see guys without enough sandbags or improper use of stands like this. I worked mostly on movie sets and you would definitely get an earful from the gaffer for this set up.

A piece of GRIP advice - use quality made High boys, not C Stands & a tonne of heavy SHIOTS (Shot bags) rule of thumb anything over 8 ft in height - SHOTS! …. & use a wind barometer they’re cheap & will give you accurate wind velocity & direction. Asst’s are needed on set they’re too expensive to be used as weight support. Get yourself a few SHOTS & you’re set to be rigged.

I'll never forget what he said: you can learn all the bells and whistles of filmmaking, but one thing you better know better than anything else is how to make your leading lady look gorgeous. I watch a lot of behind the scenes on netflix shows and movies to see the gear they use, and how they use it. Massive diffusion on outdoor shots has always been something they do, especially on super sunny days! You'll actually see it in the final product, sometimes the background is over exposed but the foreground scene with the actors is perfect
Others have said it, but I've worked as a grip on feature films. Cstands arent meant to hold large frame, lights and tons of other stuff. At a minimum these should be on two baby stands with 35lb bags on each stand and tied off for safety. If i was setting it on seet id have it in two combos and 2 bags on each stands on lollypops. it's extra dangerous to keep it upright like that. In light to medium wind it can take 2-3 guys from keeping it from flying away. Don't let it take flting out of those grip heads and hitting someone in the face to make you change up ouw you use it.
I recommend the Westcott version because it is lighter and quicker to setup, it's not as stable in the wind, but use grid cloth and sand bags to mitigate.
Great video, try putting on the diffuser with the frame on combo stand, that way you avoid getting it dirty and squatting down to get it on and gust hazard. 😊
I picked one of these up this summer. Best piece of gear I bought all year! Total game-changer on sunny day. Also, you mentioned not being able to fit this in a car. I drive a Prius and have no issue getting this, 5 c-stands and a bunch of lighting and grip gear in my car.
Please use at least combo stands for a scrim of this size. A 4x4 frame is really the absolute limit for c-stands outdoors and really dangerously small for even a 6x6 which is already double the surface area and an 8x8 is four times that surface area and wind loading. On professional sets a combo stand would be considered the minimum outdoors in any wind scenario and mombo-combos being the preferred with three to six 20lbs per stand if not even nine if expect a decent breeze and can’t tie it down.
From someone who has built out a one ton grip trailer and uses a fair amount of modifiers, I would NOT recommend that particular 8x8 for outdoor use (it's going to fall apart quickly). To save money on building out frames you can always buy the corners then buy the railing separately elsewhere. Also, combo stands; gotta use combo stands and lots of sandbags!! I use Modern Studio but I can see why this would be out of most peoples budgets. That said, buy once, cry once and an 8x8 with multiple rags is a solid investment!
Great video - and yes- a piece of kit that we all should be using IF we have the ability to safely set up with grip/weights/extra personnel (there's the 'rub' as Shakespeare would have said!)
Something else to add, i dont know if your particular frame can do opal as its more of a plasticy diffusion and meant to be semi permanently attached to scrims but personally i really like the quality opal gives with sunlight. It keeps some of the best qualities of sunlight while giving it just enough softness to be a really convincing diffusion outdoors. Along with what others have said such as mirrors for backlight and combo stands, etc.
Scrims are super super underrated in the age of cheap COB lights and softboxes. Beautiful light and simple control of natural light. Also, if you're finding a scrim big/inconvenient/difficult to wrangle/transport - try a white umbrella. Seriously. The humble shoot-through translucent umbrella that we all discard in favour of every other modifier is a portable, foldable, easy to deploy scrim. You can get a little bit of wind resistance if it's facing the wind too (vs scrims anyway, you will still need many sandbags if there is even a slight breeze). I have a 60" and it's perfect for covering one person as long as you aren't going wide.
lol i dont think scrims are underrated on actual real production sets! i think its youtubers that dont know how to use them that why they dont have them! For outdoor shoots i need a couple 8x8 12x12 and a 20x20
that is an awesome diffuser, the models looked great with that diffusion. I've use one of those 4 x 8 foldable diffusion pieces for wedding pictures when there was no shade and got a similar effect but a smaller area. Congratulations on your success. Looks like having a lot of fun!

I have a similar setup: 2 C-stands with a sq.frame w/diffuser material between them. My frame is 5'sq.; a compromise on a smaller "sail" issue but enough for close ups. 2nd person is essential, Yes.
I love my 8 x 8 scrim. I've been using one for years. I've been wanting to build a cube with it but my old Wescott version is expensive. Yes, it's difficult to use on your own. It's best to have an assistant for these things. You can also use it as a giant softbox in a studio setting.
I really like the quality of the Glow brand. I used 5 of these 8x8’s hanging from a grid on a feature recently and was impressed with the quality. I also have a Glow 36” parabolic that’s worth way more than the price. Thanks for the video.
No reason for this to be 4 times the cost of a regular outdoor party canopy. There is actually less frame work, less metal, and fewer pivoting points. The skrims are not contoured like a canopy top, just flat. This is a FANTASTIC piece of equipment, but the price is something I have to take issue with.

Please don't call it a scrim. It's an 8x8 diffusion. "Scrim" being used for every light modifier is extremely confusing. It's an unfortunate holdover from the photo world. People will see this comment as gatekeeping, but effective and precise communication in a crew-oriented job is necessary to get what you need done. Not trying to be a hardass, but "scrim" as a catch-all just adds confusion.
Yeah if you said scrim to me I'd show up with a net. Very different result. Didn't catch it but I'm guessing that was a magic cloth. There are dozens of diffusion types as well.

They're relatively easy to produce and we'd get to see more content from you. Some examples are: crankycameraman, david morefield, PDMokry, and Joel Gabrielsen.
HA! You’ve BEEN official. But this video drop was timely. I’ve been looking into purchasing a scrim this year/early next. Had a shoot like 3 years ago and we did 1 interview outdoors and not having that control of the elements like that. Definitely needed one!
Amazon won't ship them to my country. Most people I know that own a scrim have them custom made., or it's a 15 year old kit that takes forever to assemble.
Now you should add a decent soft light as a key because for a decent commercial look background should be -1ev under exposed and for now your background is still blown up overexposed by at least 1,5ev ;) you are half way there for the decent basic commercial look

Never use it outdoor without ringing ropes to avoid the frame to fly away. IT could be very VERY dangerous. You need bigger stands. ropes rigging and two guys for safety. Those big frames can't be use outdoor on a small budget. You need a full crew !!!! The injuries could shut down your business !!!

Looks like you are getting to a place where working solo or with an assistant is no longer the best approach. You should have a crew for these type of setups. Leave this to your Keygrip to work out so you can focus on the visuals. You need proper combos and sandbags for exterior frames. Too much work to manage by yourself leave that for the grips.

Yo! For my talking head at the desk I’m using the Shure SM7B + Cloudlifter and running it directly into the BMPCC 6k. Then for the outdoor, it’s the DJI Mic into the Sony FX3. Compression & EQ in post!

I've almost been smacked in the face by a 12x on mombos and multiple guys holding on to it. Had to clear set and basically let it blow down. Even a mild draft can grab those things. It's basically the sail of a ship.
bruhhh get some lolipops flying a frame on gobos is sketch. also you should only fly frames outside on combo stands. Shouldnt use c stands outside. Stair legs are not rocky mountain leg.

You really need a pair of combo stands with 4.5” grip heads for this setup outside. Plus, get some ropes. Use a truckers hitch to secure it.

yeah those small sqaure and quick frames can't take the wind. Get some concrete/circus tent stakes and tie it off.

Glad you enjoy! I used a 35mm @ F/1.4 + Black Pro Mist 1/8 with some very soft lighting! The Black Pro mist helps a lot!
