One should also take into account that this song was released in 2004 when the Bush administration basically said to the world: If you are not with us, you are against us.

Yeah this is a great song. Every country has its issues, as you said. We get stuff right here like health care, our tertiary education system is breaking down though. Welfare is a bit of a mess (10 year wait list for public housing is nuts) & like housing prices 50km from the cbd are half a mil or so. Petrol is $1.80L so 4L to a gallon - bonkers. But the person who made your pizza or the bar staff at a show are all paid a half decent wage, it's just the cost of power here & rentals is out of control.
And don't even get me started on how our Indigenous people are treated still.
It does no good to be quiet about this stuff & I mean rammstein have had a pretty successful jab at Germany & America now & good for them I reckon.

    English Lyrics:
    [Chorus]
    We're all living in America
    America is wonderful
    We're all living in America
    America, America
    We're all living in America
    America is wonderful
    We're all living in America
    America, America
    [Verse 1]
When we dance I want to lead
When you turn yourself around alone
Let us control you a bit
I'll show you how to walk right
We create a lovely round dance
The freedom plays from all violins
Music comes from the White House
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse
    [Chorus]
    We're all living in America
    America is wonderful
    We're all living in America
    America, America
    [Verse 2]
I know the very useful steps
And I will protect you from missteps
And who does not want to dance at the end
Does not know that he must dance
We create a lovely round dance
I will show you the direction
    To Africa comes Santa Claus
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse
    [Chorus]
    We're all living in America
    America is wonderful
    We're all living in America
    America, America
    We're all living in America
    Coca Cola, Wonderbra
    We're all living in America
    America, America
    [Bridge]
This is not a love song
This is not a love song
I don't sing my mother tongue
No, this is not a love song
    [Chorus]
    We're all living in America
    America is wonderful
    We're all living in America
    America, America
    We're all living in America
    Coca Cola, sometimes war

The boys in the band were born and grew in East Germany as part of the Soviet Union in the cold war days...and the song came out in the early 2000's. So think about that proximity and background. They grew up poor in a sort of Orwell's 1984 sort of reality of the cold war. Their youths were spent in a form of darkness juxtaposed by the west which was a sort of glittering thing you could not participate in but wanted to. The wall came down and they got to but they also remembered a world that was simpler, more stark where all you had were each other. US values seemed overwhelming alluring but vapid, surficial, shallow and always appealing to the senses.
It is surreal to those who have lived in another reality. They communicate both the "grandeur" of "Amerika" AND its shallow nature...and its draw with all its sensorial delights but also the danger... And the "ominous" tone in the song points to the ever increasing pervasiveness of "American values" seemingly consisting on only chasing dollar bills and fantasies...
American core values are based upon the Declaration of Independence and that is oriented completely around the individual in ways that have never been before. That is a good thing that draws the world and why everyone want to come here. But, we here have followed that to the point where we are in some ways a caricature of what we espouse... That is the point of the song trying to remind everyone that sure it is appealing and is oriented around raising up others economically as part of the "dream," but perhaps you might want to keep part of who and what you are intact and to NOT become fully enmeshed and entwined in the Amerikan reality... It has its own requirements for participation that are not always good....
As an American, even I can see our excesses and their consequences when you become separated from the anchor of your foundational core ideals. Just look at our recent elections and WHO was elected, himself almost a caricature of an American President. Remember, the road to hell can be paved with good intentions but then you have to look at the alternatives to Amerika and one of those was the world they were born into that is still rearing its head. So where is the middle?
Oh, also, if you watch the live version the ominous nature is fully enmeshed in the live concert. AND Amerika is personified ironically in the fact that the band is playing live in a 100,000 person arena, with American guitars designed for American Rock and Roll not much different in tone that what they present in a format born in America. The irony is exquisite if you are perspicacious. And that message whether you like it or not is that America is pervasive and seeded into everything the world is...at present. Emulated, desired, feared, wanted, surreal, but so desirable and yet a destroyer of others values not by force but by seduction...
Unlike anything from the past, Amerika does not want to kill you in a war to control you, we want to seduce you with Mickey Mouse, McDonald's and wunderbra's...
I am reminded of Winston Churchill when he said... "No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…"
Kind of the same thing with Amerika but in the largest sense much bigger than just governmental ideology although that is important. What we represent is complete in government, style, culture and way of life... We chase dollar bills instead of ideologies, singularly so putting the dynamic tensions of reality in a completely different place than those of the past that still haunt us in places like Ukraine...
Hey, want a Big Mac and fries? I'll buy... I have a great new Alpine sound system in my Ram 2500 truck and we can listen to Rammstein... Life is good...for the moment...

Crazy to think how our country has played a huge part in cultivating a world that is always at war now. How many years have we spent in peace as opposed to the years we’ve spent with weapons in arms. It’s crazy to think about but we gotta push those American policies and feed the military industrial complex I suppose. Also shout out to all my fellow Americans who’s families can still speak their ancestors languages and not just English.

Rammstein was visiting the US (twice I guess) before 9/11 and loved it despite any possible culture shock. But after 9/11 all that changed so drastically (like "Covid" did on an almost global scale btw.) that they didn't recognize that country they visited before...and as a result you have that song.
20 Years later it's even more true (now on a global scale).
"And he who doesn't want to dance,
still doesn't know he has to dance"
    (The American Dance)
    summarises quiet well
I don't blame the Americans as ppl, it's just that your Democracy has been hijacked by a decadent, sick bunch of A-holes first.
With Germany right behind (in your butt). So don't worry we're in the same boat...😆
"First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin", comes to my mind.
    You're both great btw. ;) ❤

The video criticizes not only consumerism but US cultural imperialism in general. Also, you should consider the political situation at the time in which Bush wanted to force all allies into the Iraq war and countries like Germany or France were not convinced of the "evidence" of Sadam's weapons of mass destruction. Bush said that everyone who is not with America is against America. The video thus originated as a criticism of this approach. (By the way, the video is not from 2015 but from 2004).

I'm from Portugal an I love it!
The song pokes fun at America, but the line "We are all living in America" seems more like a self critic to all non-Americans. We are guilty of it, forced or not, we embraced the good and the bad. You guys are definitely part of the good from America in my world 😃

The lyrics of the song caused discussions within the band, as the musicians had completely dispensed with political statements in their pieces. However, the song was written after September 11, 2001 during the time of the Iraq war, in the context of which the band members found the US's globally demanding behavior to be problematic. In order to avoid a raised index finger, it was decided to keep the text ironic

I don’t know if this has been said before, but the reason Richard winks at the camera at the end of the video is because he was "living in America” when the music video was filmed. He was living in New York during 9/11. On 9/11, he got calls from friends and family in Germany asking him if he was ok? He didn’t know what they were talking about, so he walked out of his apartment and walked down the street a little bit when he saw the 2nd plane fly into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

There's always someone who did an arguably bigger oops.
Sacking Constantinople *created* "the Balkans as we know it" leading Bismarck to predict that was where WW1 was gonna come from.
Who knows? No WW1, maybe no WW2, and then the only big bad thing you did was 30 Years War but that's putting you a lot more clearly straight across even with England and France not easy to say worse and might seriously be better.
Sacking Constantinople was actually big enough up there maybe it's comparable to the WWs, and, well, you guys didn't do that one and it gave you a lame map to inherit.
I'm slightly Italian and there's almost no good way to spin that. Italians are unusually easy to mock by others. I laugh at myself but I cry because it is not as happy funny as Germans. Germans get to complain about Italians. A lot :P

The song probably sings how America controls the world, wants it and everyone dances to its tune, figuratively speaking.
    For example -
Wenn getanzt wird will ich fuehren,
Auch wenn ihr euch alleine dreht,
    Lasst euch ein wenig kontrollieren,
Ich zeige euch wie's richtig geht,
    (When there's dancing,
    I want to lead
    Even if you turn alone
Let us control you a little
I show you how it's done,)
    Or -
Ich kenne Schritte die sehr nuetzen,
Und werde euch vor Fehltritt schuetzen,
Und wer nicht tanzen will am Schluss,
Weiss noch nicht dass er tanzen muss.
(I know steps that are very useful
And will protect you from missteps,
And if you don't want to dance at the end,
Don't know yet that he has to dance).
    And then another -
    We're all living in America,
    amerika ist wunderbar,
    We're all living in America,
    America, America,
    We're all living in America,
    coca-cola,
    sometimes war,
    We're all living in America,
    America, America.
Here it is so clear. Vietnam, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Syria, Afghanistan, etc. At the same time, everyone in America, that is, they eat hamburgers and drink Coca-Cola. And the scene at the end, when the video is being filmed, is a joke about America's flights to the moon, which, according to many versions, are considered fake. One big lie. If only because the flights were so long ago and turned out, and then the technologies developed, and the flights all stopped, strange, then they refused to give this soil to anyone for a long time, etc. Probably they wanted to say this in the song secretly, it seems to me so, I could be wrong.

Living abroad helps to understand the home country better. Having only an insight perspective on something, isn’t healthy. It isn’t healthy to have only an outside perspective on something. They keep trying to pass laws to make weapon components illegal so they can jail us and imprison us as felons so we may never be able to vote or own a gun. If you want some great examples of those, I recommend the songs "Langeweile", "Herzschrittmacher" & "Hässlich" by Feeling B, 3 songs that were solely recorded by Flake & Paul, with Flake doing the vocals instead of Feeling B's usual vocalist Aljoscha. And the songs "Crowded House" & "Big Dong"(and despite the title, no that song isn't about "THAT") by First Arsch, which are 2 songs that feature vocals by Till(in English), who used to be the drummer of First Arsch.

It's overall about the "ameican exceptionalism", which is all about, that the USA is such a great and wonderufl nation, that it simply has to lead the whole world - what is of course just another word for imperialism.
The line "Und wer nicht tanzen will am Schluss, weiß noch nicht, dass er tanzen muss" = And those who don't want to dance in the end, just don't know they have to dance."
It takes the idea, that we all dance together in a "lieben Reigen" = merry round dance, so dancing together like happy kids - but the USA chooses the music, leads the dance - and FORCES you to dance.
This of course points at all the wars of the USA all around the globe against those nations who don't want to follow their idea of american exceptionalism or stand otherwise in the way.
Beside this it of course also about how US culture via capitalism plus thit background just flushes away other cultures.

Great take on America's influence, good and bad, on the rest of the world, hence Coca-Cola, sometimes war. I don't speak my mother tongue is an obvious reference to the marginalisation of Native Americans. I love the way that Schneider is still looking at that pesky flag apparatus at the end of the video too. Great social commentary from the band as I've come to expect from them (I grew up listening to the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Crass, etc. and rather than the in your face approach of these bands, Rammstein are doing things in a slightly tongue in cheek way). I mean, America is a great country, with great inventions, no doubt. Who are we, us Europeans, and us Germans in particular, to accuse the United States? We were nothing if there wasn't the Marshall Plan (or ERP) after the end of WW2! In my opinion, this video rather is an accusation to all of the countries and the people around the globe that sell their own identities for Coca Cola and Hamburgers, and forget about their own heritages. Every country on this planet is unique. So why not adopting the great inventions from all over the world, and of course from America, but preserving our own identities at the same time?

Nobody talked about the last seconds of the video: A picture of Rammstein after this video "I think we got a problem here." lol

You guys did great. For a little clarification. The song was published, shortly after 9/11. For the rest of the world, especially for us Europeans, the U.S. had become strange after the horrible events and what was going on in Amerika (😉) itself. It seemed like EVERYBODY just wanted to destroy something, no matter if it was involved or not. (The media definitely had their share on it)
Until then, to Europeans, the US was a tolerant, laid back/ cool country. The majority still likes the US, but the view certainly has become more realistic. With love from Germany 🤘 😎

As an American, I'm ashamed of our disgusting Empire. We are no longer democratic and I'm making plans to get out.

Btw. There even is an English Version of the song, with slightly altered lyrics. Might be worth reacting to that one as well.

The part with "Mickey Mouse" (German: Micky Maus) is a reference to Euro-Disneyland, which is located outside of Paris. It can be understood as France strongly protecting its own culture from foreign influences.

That part I always thougth they are referring to mickey mouse as enimy troops who are on the brink to march into Paris. Because the way he said it was like you could hear it in some old war documentaries. Which could also mark the underlying thread of the American culture to the European.

Fun fact: Those are real Apollo-era space suits from NASA. There were several Rammstein fans working there who made it possible to borrow the real suits :D
On Till's it says 'Armstrong', which was added as a reference it is not the real suit Armstrong wore when he took his famous step.
They talk about it in the making-of I believe, but I'm not sure if its translated or has subtitles.

I highly recommend u guys to react to Rammstein - Amerika (Live at Rock im Park 2017), it's one of my most favorite live performances from them .. that guitar riff at the end and the song overall is incredibly good. U will not regret that, keep going! :)

This song is about the spread of the American culture or rather the lack thereof.
