Thanks for another great video! We're headed there in November. I'll let you know how the inside of the castle is. 😆 I've added that dessert to my list of things to eat. It looks incredible. Extra thanks to Kyde for the depth of detail about the happenings inside Dogo. I am also not really an onsen person but since this one is "special" AND they allow tattoos, I figure I have to try it. I really like knowing ahead of time what I'm getting into, especially when being naked is involved! (Hopefully the vag scrubber isn't there when I go though. 😳)

Oh dang! I was in Dogo in May too, so many things I want to comment... 1. Did you stay at Guesthouse Cinnamon Dogo? The owner sent me to eat the same nabeyaki udon at that shop on the corner... Japanese comfort food, yum. 2. I climbed up to the yabusame shrine at night and spooked a real live tanuki off those steps... scared me pretty good too 3. The Karakuri clock in Dogo square is telling little vignettes from the famous novel “Botchan” by Natsume Soseki. He used to have a room in Dogo Onsen where he hung out and did authorly things I guess. A lot of the attraction of the Dogo Onsen area is related to nostalgia for the novel, which most Japanese folks read in childhood (I think) 4. The Tsubaki no Yuu Annex “posh” experience was lovely, rotenburo and all. Matsuyama-jo is indeed legit inside, one of the twelve “original construction” castles in Japan

What a cool video about Matsuyama. I've only been there for a couple of hours going from the airport to the ferry and back, but I'd love to go back and explore it properly. That castle looked awesome.

The fact that everything was pretty close to the city will be a huge benefit for me when I get there, since I'm too lazy to want to set up public transit or taxis for everything xD The chair lift up to the castle looks awesome, you should totally go back and check out the inside sometime! Didn't you want to ride the little diesel train? It looked super fun. Kyde's description of Vagina Washer's antics was hilarious, what a fun experience. And screw the haters, I think the beanie is kind of your trademark accessory at this point. It looks good on you!
Balloons were used extensively during world war one as observation platforms to spot for artillery & reconaissance & were used for long before that. The French used spotter balloons way back in the late 1700's. I agree by WW1 you'd have to have some guts to be the one in the balloon with aircraft becoming more capable fighting machines in that era.
There was this similar Tanooki statue by my neighbors house and everytime in the dark I came around the corner and saw it white eyes that seemed to glow in the dark it scared the cucumber out of me. Ramune is not mistranslated, is been fact that is is the wasei-eigo of the word lemonade.
So excited to see that you visited Matsuyama! I visit by myself in 2014 with very limited Japanese. It made it a little tricky to get around but made it a very interesting experience. You should definitely go back and visit the castle one day, the chair ride up and the grounds are awesome, however the inside of the castle is really authentic, it still one of my favourite experiences in Japan. Also, I couldn't stop laughing when Kyde was talking about the 'angle lady', I'm almost certain that she is the same lady I saw when I went there. I'm pretty relaxed about using an onsen, but this lady made me feel a little uncomfortable. She really got into the scrubbing and I saw things I will unfortunately never forget! So many angles haha. In 2014, the onsen workers had no english, it was hard to work out what they would provide. I thankfully took some soap. I paid for access to another onsen in the building as well, apparently used by royalty, I wouldn't use it again as it was very small and they had communal soap, which freaked me out. The onsen town and Matsuyama are worth a visit, very unique experience.
Matsuyama is an overlooked treasure in Japan. Anyone going there should read Botchan by Soseki Natsume and use it as a travel guide. In any event, so many great things and was nice to see shots of one of my favorite shotengai. Also, caused a mild panic when you started with: we have come to a temple for relationships - momentary panic for one of my favorite couples. Take care and thanks as always!
I stayed in the Dog Onsen area back in 2011 and I don't remember the projection on the building at night. I noticed the projection when I visited on Nov. 2019. I can't exactly recall how much I paid to take a bath in the Dogo Onsen in 2011, but it was more than 1000¥. Yes, you get to access the open area upstairs for refreshment, to relax and enjoy the premises and the view from the balcony. I saw many people taking pictures from there then. Being new to onsen bathing, I didn't bring anything except a change of clothes and a towel from my hotel. They gave me a small bar of soap, small towel and the bath shower gel were provided in the shower room. Following day, I took a bath in the public onsen not from from the Dogo Onsen and the cost was way cheaper. I think I only paid 200¥ for the experience. Good memories though nonetheless.

Definitely not Red Bull taste! Have you ever tried Sprite? Not as carbonated, less sweet and more of a candy flavour on top of Sprites lemon lime taste.
@@lmaree200886 it is propably hard to compare, because the drinks taste different in different countries. In Germany and Holland I think sprite is not very sweet so less sweet would mean it is almost like water 😂🤷♀️ I shall have to go find me some ramuné

I live in Australia and have had my local Sprite and the US imported Sprite and both tastes almost the same just a slight difference, just the sugars were different as we don’t use corn syrup but cane sugar. Ramune tastes just like Sprite with bubblegum (original pink bubblegum flavour like pink Hubba Bubba bubblegum here in Aus or the pink Bazooka gum in the US.

That thing on the castle you said was for dropping oil or lead or other nasties is called ishiotoshi 石落or ishiotoshimado 石落窓, which as you can probably gather refers to rocks being dropped from it. Although castle researchers and experts now think that this might be a misunderstanding of the name. Because of the size of the openings, and the angles of the walls below them, there is some doubt as to if they were really mainly used to drop rocks. While dropping some rocks might have been a use of them, some researchers now think that their main purpose was to fire down onto the enemy below with either bows or matchlocks. I know it is an odd comment. I watch most of your Japan videos (I used to live in Tokyo so Jvlog videos are like little tastes of my second home), and as you can probably tell by my username, castles are part of my interests.
It's not something I would expect someone who isn't a Japanese history geek to know haha. I know what you mean about maps. I got lost in Kyoto trying to follow a map my hotel gave me. The orientation was wrong, there was no compass, and the proportions were off. So it looked like it was not that far away, but an or so hour later I found myself in a residential area. I surprised a lady in her yard by calling out "sumimasen" and then asking her in Japanese which direction I needed to go. She was really nice about it, and told me I was really far away and that even though I was following the map, I had been walking in basically the opposite direction. It was annoying at the time, but when looked back on it I was kind of glad that I got lost because I got to see parts of Kyoto I probably wouldn't have if I didn't, and in the end it worked out and I got to where I wanted to be (although much later and more tired than I was planning on haha).
Usually we use nippon rent-a-car, but sometimes we find deals with other companies. The cost is dependant on the type of car, time kept, where it's picked up and dropped off, etc so it's hard to give a straight answer. You can check specifics on their website...I *think* it has English? -E
Kyde and Eric a question: I like to travel to the non-touristy places in countries: So the places I have in my mind are Chugoku-san-jin, shikoku, kyushu, and tohoku. I have done my research on festivals and geography. Aomori/Hachinohe float festivals, Seto Inland Sea, and beaches on southern Kyushu are the places are top priority for me. What would you suggest and why?
Its really hard to narrow down the list when we don'T personally know the person asking for advise, but I don't think you are going to have a bad trip no matter where you go off that list. Shikoku is a personal favorite of mine, but you have to have a car rented to make the most of it. -E
Maybe the more detailed map on the far right is oriented that way (horizontally) because it won't fit in nicely if it were laid down horizontally. Just a guess. Talking about how It wouldn't be visually harmonious and the margins.
1906 the Japanese were at war with Rissia: Japanese Russo war. The flag with an X is the Russian flag. Tsushima (sp?) very famous naval battle between the two where the japanese wa the victor. You can still visit their flagship Mikasa.

I think what was going on at the onsen building was some kind of celebration to do with manga artist Tezuka Osamu from what I could gather from the posters and wotnot displayed there. I'm no expert on him, but I know he had a story/stories about a phoenix etc.

Balloons back then were used for observation. They were held in place by ropes that could be cranked down in a hurry if needed. Once air power came about balloons became quickly obsolete. The hat looks alright Zig Zag man.
@21:40 seems like an exciting fight is happening there. The lady with the bucket in hand is about to hit the one on the floor; all the while, two other ladies are trying to hold her back. The yelling has attracted the male worker to see what is going on and the rest of the ladies trying to stay out of that catfight.

It's super hard to gauge exactly how much we eat when watching videos, sometimes there is more food that you don't see because it's not noteworthy or other times it seems like all we do is eat b/c nothing happens worth filming between meals so it makes it seem like we eat 6 meals a day, haha. -E

Japan's implementation of maps are *horribly* awful. it's my biggest gripe whenever I visit. i *DETEST* how they're usually oriented in the direction you're facing; however, i think that has to do w/ how Japanese are taught to read maps as kids. usually they're taught to keep turning the map in their hands to face the way they're going (similar to how some car GPS Maps tend to auto rotate as you drive).

I have always loved Japanese onsen and have visited many, many throughout Japan including Dogo in Matsuyama. Perhaps it is because of my first trip to Japan as a university student. We stayed in dorm rooms with Japanese students. The cleaning option was the public bath so that was my daily experience for most of the week so it soon became the norm to strip naked with a bunch of guys and settle in to the communal bath. Yes, everyone has the moment with their first Auntie cleaning up in the men's dressing room.
Man I’m tired of some of the ignorant fools on your guys’ videos lately. Some are a little pathetic complaining about a beanie or a tshirt! Or others that ask stupid and personal questions too! I spent quite a time Matsuyama I remember all these places. I stayed in Ehime . I also did my First Onsen hot springs . It’s quite the experience.

We didn't ride the train b/c of time restraints basically, but now I wonder if you could ride the train over towards the castle.... haha. -E

That thing on the castle you said was for dropping oil or lead or other nasties is called ishiotoshi 石落or ishiotoshimado 石落窓, which as you can probably gather refers to rocks being dropped from it. Although castle researchers and experts now think that this might be a misunderstanding of the name. Because of the size of the openings, and the angles of the walls below them, there is some doubt as to if they were really mainly used to drop rocks. While dropping some rocks might have been a use of them, some researchers now think that their main purpose was to fire down onto the enemy below with either bows or matchlocks. I know it is an odd comment. I watch most of your Japan videos (I used to live in Tokyo so Jvlog videos are like little tastes of my second home), and as you can probably tell by my username, castles are part of my interests.

It's not something I would expect someone who isn't a Japanese history geek to know haha. I know what you mean about maps. I got lost in Kyoto trying to follow a map my hotel gave me. The orientation was wrong, there was no compass, and the proportions were off. So it looked like it was not that far away, but an or so hour later I found myself in a residential area. I surprised a lady in her yard by calling out "sumimasen" and then asking her in Japanese which direction I needed to go. She was really nice about it, and told me I was really far away and that even though I was following the map, I had been walking in basically the opposite direction. It was annoying at the time, but when looked back on it I was kind of glad that I got lost because I got to see parts of Kyoto I probably wouldn't have if I didn't, and in the end it worked out and I got to where I wanted to be (although much later and more tired than I was planning on haha).
Where do you usually rent vehicles from and how much do you usually pay?
Usually we use nippon rent-a-car, but sometimes we find deals with other companies. The cost is dependant on the type of car, time kept, where it's picked up and dropped off, etc so it's hard to give a straight answer. You can check specifics on their website...I *think* it has English? -E
Kyde and Eric a question: I like to travel to the non-touristy places in countries: So the places I have in my mind are Chugoku-san-jin, shikoku, kyushu, and tohoku. I have done my research on festivals and geography. Aomori/Hachinohe float festivals, Seto Inland Sea, and beaches on southern Kyushu are the places are top priority for me. What would you suggest and why?
Its really hard to narrow down the list when we don'T personally know the person asking for advise, but I don't think you are going to have a bad trip no matter where you go off that list. Shikoku is a personal favorite of mine, but you have to have a car rented to make the most of it. -E
Maybe the more detailed map on the far right is oriented that way (horizontally) because it won't fit in nicely if it were laid down horizontally. Just a guess. Talking about how It wouldn't be visually harmonious and the margins.

1906 the Japanese were at war with Rissia: Japanese Russo war. The flag with an X is the Russian flag. Tsushima (sp?) very famous naval battle between the two where the japanese wa the victor. You can still visit their flagship Mikasa.

I think what was going on at the onsen building was some kind of celebration to do with manga artist Tezuka Osamu from what I could gather from the posters and wotnot displayed there. I'm no expert on him, but I know he had a story/stories about a phoenix etc.

Balloons back then were used for observation. They were held in place by ropes that could be cranked down in a hurry if needed. Once air power came about balloons became quickly obsolete. The hat looks alright Zig Zag man.

Everytime I see how you guys share one dish, I'm amazed that you are still look pretty healthy, despite eating not much. Guess, I'm the one, who eats more than needed ^^
It's super hard to gauge exactly how much we eat when watching videos, sometimes there is more food that you don't see because it's not noteworthy or other times it seems like all we do is eat b/c nothing happens worth filming between meals so it makes it seem like we eat 6 meals a day, haha. -E

Japan's implementation of maps are *horribly* awful. it's my biggest gripe whenever I visit.
i *DETEST* how they're usually oriented in the direction you're facing; however, i think that has to do w/ how Japanese are taught to read maps as kids.
usually they're taught to keep turning the map in their hands to face the way they're going (similar to how some car GPS Maps tend to auto rotate as you drive).
In a way, I'm glad someone else is as irritated as I am hahaha

I have always loved Japanese onsen and have visited many, many throughout Japan including Dogo in Matsuyama. Perhaps it is because of my first trip to Japan as a university student. We stayed in dorm rooms with Japanese students. The cleaning option was the public bath so that was my daily experience for most of the week so it soon became the norm to strip naked with a bunch of guys and settle in to the communal bath. Yes, everyone has the moment with their first Auntie cleaning up in the men's dressing room.
