The Sanno Festival, a festival of the nation, is a stylish and cool Edo festival where many people fill the center of Edo Tokyo with carriers. Led by 100 carpenters, 17 portable shrines head to Nihonbashi Bridge, and at the center of the bridge, on top of the Japan National Highway Origin Marker, the portable shrines are pointed up toward the sky.
The Sanno Festival is a festival of Hie Shrine, which was worshiped by the Tokugawa family, and is counted among the three major festivals in Japan, along with the Gion Festival in Kyoto and the Tenman Festival in Osaka.
Its history is very old, beginning more than 500 years ago. It is one of the nation's festivals with the widest parishioner area (shrine worship area) in Edo, and was allowed to enter Edo Castle.
The Sanno Festival is not a single festival held on a specific day, but a collective name for more than 20 festivals held over about 10 days. During the Edo period, the Sanno Festival featured floats, and from the Meiji period, mikoshi (portable shrines) were used for the parade, but after the war the number of carriers decreased, and the vitality of the mikoshi processions from each neighborhood gradually faded. As a result, the mikoshi from the Nihonbashi and Kyobashi neighborhoods began to parade together, and in 2006, Kayabacho joined in, forming the "Shitamachi Rengo Togyo."
In 2008, the Hatchobori area was added to the mikoshi from Takaracho, Kyobashi, Yaesu, Kabutocho, Kayabacho, Nihonbashi, and Edobashi areas, changing the mikoshi procession throughout the entire Teikyo Shitamachi area.
The sight of 17 mikoshi parading between Kyobashi and Nihonbashi is simply spectacular.
