Jon, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to have suffered for so long with anxiety and depression. When I was in my twenties, I had a very bad year with anxiety which then led to depression and it was the worst year of my life. How are you now? I am so pleased that the vlogs are uplifting for you and I hope that you can find the support that you need. Last winter saw a couple in the middle of an "urban park" ( Lister, BFD.) It was'nt a particular cold spell, either....Chuffed to bits was i. Come the winter, the park is fab to do a spot of "binocular work" in....

What a beautiful video. There really is nothing like’messing about with boats’ said the Water Rat. And accompanied by a lovely illustrated poem. This is one of the canals which we didn’t get to visit in my battiwboating days. The stretch of water travelled, brings back great memories. I sincerely hope that you are able to publish your journal one day it will make a wonderful narrative of your encounters with nature people and places. Well done and thank you from an old man who misses his homeland its very precious that you share your lifestyle in such a unique way. I have memories of some wonderful friends who lived on a narrowboat, they met while both serving in the merchant navy and when they retired they had a brand new boat built it was beautiful. I remember being invited back one night during a blizzard the warmth inside that boat was incredible and I spent the night with Tom and Marjorie and after a great cooked breakfast walked through the snow packed tow paths to home precious memories.

@@themindfulnarrowboat I think they're mostly on the off side, whereas we're on the towpath side, near the Hop Pole pub ( and water point) .We're slightly elevated from the canal, with a highish hedge, so not viewable from the water, just our back gate!

Ahh beautiful damson fly… it’s lovely how you care for such small things … I remember putting a bumble bee that had got into the house and became exhausted onto a little piece of cardboard that I moistened with some drips of water and mixed in some sugar grains. I was so pleased to see her unroll her proboscis and she must have drank the sweetened water and after a little while she buzzed off and carried on her nectar gathering. I LOVE ❤️ nature x

In all my trips to England I've never seen a hot day until now, Then, I've never seen a canal where wheels would be more appropriate either. So glad you negotiated the bottoms with style and grace as always.

Hello lovely Anthony from the three of us! Thank you again for such a wonderful comment. The first thing you asked was about the veganism. Mr M was the first out of us to become vegan; we were both vegetarian for a while first, but as I am the main cook, making two separate meals was tricky. Then I started to read more about the dairy industry and animal exploitation in general and I started to explore how to become vegan, but in a healthy way. I really didn't want to eat the vegan, processed foods as they do not contain the best ingredients either. To be honest with you, I have to be careful with my diet as I am gluten intolerant and so I really don't want to start cutting out major food groups that could damage my health. I balance as much as I can, I eat a lot of fresh veg, brown rice, make all the meals from scratch, using herbs and spices and then I sometimes eat fish, if I am out in a restaurant and the vegan option isn't GF. Zephyr is not vegan and eats normal dog food and when my son visits, I always buy him the foods he likes such as eggs, cheese and dairy milk as I believe we should never force our opinions on others. Mr M and I pay for a boat service twice a year. We have a stainless steel water tank so that we don't need to de-rust, but we still don't drink the tank water, instead, we fill up water bottles at the tap and then run the water through a water jug. They’re the family who haul boats up the slipway there for blacking. He drove the tractor that pulled us out back in April. Knows the canal like the back of his hand, I’m told. Another lovely vlog. Great wildlife shots, especially the lapwings and oyster catchers. That was very shallow water, we really could do with some rain, the waterways are very low. Those lapwings and oystercatchers sound just like your Parliament does at times...just an observation. What you read about trees and temperature is true. I live in area of a major East Coast city that has a lot of trees - some being considered 'old growth' - and my neighborhood is typically on average 10-12 degrees cooler then other areas in the city with less trees. And yes, people can be most helpful, especially when greeted with a big smile which you are quick with Vanessa. Enjoyed the video - thank you! Cheers...

Well THAT! was a right Malarky - EH? .... Lucky you met some Great Kids and Yes! People 'are' Good! ... Just that Good People seldom get the headlines 😞 ..... Watched Springwatch the other day, they said Lapwings were on a Massive! Decline! ... Such Glorious Birds Too! ... Remember as a Kid in the 50's/60's there was a large field between the River Loddon and the Railway Station in our village, absolutely STUFFED with breeding Lapwings each Year ... ONE Memorable sight that used to be 🙂

Lapwings are such fascinating birds aren't they? I saw many of them last year along the Little Ouse River and they are in places along this canal, but only one or two. Hi Will, I hope you are managing in the heat and that you have a cool plan for next week's temperatures. We were fine in Deep Lock fortunately. I think this canal should put a fuel stop in somewhere along the navigation and then more boaters might make their way up here. We asked the car transporter company next to Kiveton Park Station if we could fill up our portable water container to keep us going whilst at the top of the navigation. It’s a long while since we have had peewits living in the field next to us. A real joy to see them again. I thought you must be sailing over a supermarket trolley when you encountered metal in the shallow water…..you do see life don’t you?
Some of you that I just found and subscribed to are showing a different boating experience. The shallow waters and boats getting hung up….I am wondering why the debris is not cleared out of the canals…..by the CRT or volunteers? Or, that those shallow spots are not clearly marked for boaters? Your filming is lovely.

The debris is sometimes cleared from the canals by CRT, but as the water is unusually shallow this year, we are noticing the debris more. Hi Edmund, I was so impressed with the youngsters and their immediate rush to help us. It is sad when rubbish gets thrown in the canals, but there is a real shift to protect the water in that area which is what the local warden was doing a great job working on. Solo boaters would have struggled through that stretch, but CRT were doing regular checks of it and hopefully help the solo boaters through it. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. If I had a narrowboat, I’d be tempted to erect shade cloth suspended on a light frame about 200mm above the roof in the summer, I’m sure it would lower the inside cabin temperature. Anyway just an idea, as many narrowboat folks have mentioned the heat in their boats.

The temperature inside the boat the other day was 30 degrees and seems to be hotter inside during the evening than outside, so it retains the heat of the day. We will be mooring under the trees this weekend and possibly have to move outside somewhere cool on Monday and Tuesday. A church is always a good place to sit when the outside heat gets too much. I just love your videos with the history of the places you visit and your blogs and your art work cheer me up and with your dog having a roll in the grass do you do the Leeds and Liverpool canal its nice on there and there is a tunnel called the Mile tunnel I been through on a boat back in the old days it must have been hard work to lie on your back to walk the tunnel to get to the other side and there is a pub on the canal side and get a beer and chill

Watching this video and seeing your problems with the rubble in the water under the bridge, I was wondering how often the water gets cleaned out to keep you from getting damage to the boat
That is a very good question and I don't know how often it gets cleaned out but now that we are going to be subjected to more drought each year, I think keeping the bottom of the canal, debris-free should be a routine spring job perhaps? Thank you so much for watching, take care🌻🦋

As someone who has spent the past 20 years learning to live with chronic anxiety and depression, I find your vlogs really uplifting.
Jon, I can't imagine how difficult it must be to have suffered for so long with anxiety and depression. When I was in my twenties, I had a very bad year with anxiety which then led to depression and it was the worst year of my life. How are you now? I am so pleased that the vlogs are uplifting for you and I hope that you can find the support that you need. Last winter saw a couple in the middle of an "urban park" ( Lister, BFD.) It was'nt a particular cold spell, either....Chuffed to bits was i. Come the winter, the park is fab to do a spot of "binocular work" in....

What a beautiful video. There really is nothing like’messing about with boats’ said the Water Rat. And accompanied by a lovely illustrated poem. This is one of the canals which we didn’t get to visit in my battiwboating days. The stretch of water travelled, brings back great memories. I sincerely hope that you are able to publish your journal one day it will make a wonderful narrative of your encounters with nature people and places. Well done and thank you from an old man who misses his homeland its very precious that you share your lifestyle in such a unique way. I have memories of some wonderful friends who lived on a narrowboat, they met while both serving in the merchant navy and when they retired they had a brand new boat built it was beautiful. I remember being invited back one night during a blizzard the warmth inside that boat was incredible and I spent the night with Tom and Marjorie and after a great cooked breakfast walked through the snow packed tow paths to home precious memories.

@@themindfulnarrowboat I think they're mostly on the off side, whereas we're on the towpath side, near the Hop Pole pub ( and water point) .We're slightly elevated from the canal, with a highish hedge, so not viewable from the water, just our back gate!

Ahh beautiful damson fly… it’s lovely how you care for such small things … I remember putting a bumble bee that had got into the house and became exhausted onto a little piece of cardboard that I moistened with some drips of water and mixed in some sugar grains. I was so pleased to see her unroll her proboscis and she must have drank the sweetened water and after a little while she buzzed off and carried on her nectar gathering. I LOVE ❤️ nature x

Hello lovely Anthony from the three of us! Thank you again for such a wonderful comment. The first thing you asked was about the veganism. Mr M was the first out of us to become vegan; we were both vegetarian for a while first, but as I am the main cook, making two separate meals was tricky. Then I started to read more about the dairy industry and animal exploitation in general and I started to explore how to become vegan, but in a healthy way. I really didn't want to eat the vegan, processed foods as they do not contain the best ingredients either. To be honest with you, I have to be careful with my diet as I am gluten intolerant and so I really don't want to start cutting out major food groups that could damage my health. I balance as much as I can, I eat a lot of fresh veg, brown rice, make all the meals from scratch, using herbs and spices and then I sometimes eat fish, if I am out in a restaurant and the vegan option isn't GF. Zephyr is not vegan and eats normal dog food and when my son visits, I always buy him the foods he likes such as eggs, cheese and dairy milk as I believe we should never force our opinions on others. Mr M and I pay for a boat service twice a year. We have a stainless steel water tank so that we don't need to de-rust, but we still don't drink the tank water, instead, we fill up water bottles at the tap and then run the water through a water jug. They’re the family who haul boats up the slipway there for blacking. He drove the tractor that pulled us out back in April. Knows the canal like the back of his hand, I’m told. Those lapwings and oystercatchers sound just like your Parliament does at times...just an observation. What you read about trees and temperature is true. I live in area of a major East Coast city that has a lot of trees - some being considered 'old growth' - and my neighborhood is typically on average 10-12 degrees cooler then other areas in the city with less trees. And yes, people can be most helpful, especially when greeted with a big smile which you are quick with Vanessa. Enjoyed the video - thank you! Cheers...

Well THAT! was a right Malarky - EH? .... Lucky you met some Great Kids and Yes! People 'are' Good! ... Just that Good People seldom get the headlines 😞 ..... Watched Springwatch the other day, they said Lapwings were on a Massive! Decline! ... Such Glorious Birds Too! ... Remember as a Kid in the 50's/60's there was a large field between the River Loddon and the Railway Station in our village, absolutely STUFFED with breeding Lapwings each Year ... ONE Memorable sight that used to be 🙂

Love the Lapwings. I occasionally saw them when I was boating and I saw some in the hills near Buxton earlier this year but they have moved on.
Lapwings are such fascinating birds aren't they? I saw many of them last year along the Little Ouse River and they are in places along this canal, but only one or two. Hello Mrs Mindful. I thought he was in the marina I was trying to get to. He must be close to the canal because they are building a narrowboat. Also I was desperate for fuel and I thought that marina sold it. I would've got there and been stumped then. Oh well thanks for trying. Ooh and the message. I feel dead posh now my name's on TV. Hi Will, I hope you are managing in the heat and that you have a cool plan for next week's temperatures. We were fine in Deep Lock fortunately. I think this canal should put a fuel stop in somewhere along the navigation and then more boaters might make their way up here. We asked the car transporter company next to Kiveton Park Station if we could fill up our portable water container to keep us going whilst at the top of the navigation. She kindly allowed us to, but a water tap is needed at the top too. Anyway, thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a great weekend.🦋🌻

It’s a long while since we have had peewits living in the field next to us. A real joy to see them again. I thought you must be sailing over a supermarket trolley when you encountered metal in the shallow water…..you do see life don’t you?

Some of you that I just found and subscribed to are showing a different boating experience. The shallow waters and boats getting hung up….I am wondering why the debris is not cleared out of the canals…..by the CRT or volunteers? Or, that those shallow spots are not clearly marked for boaters? Your filming is lovely.

The debris is sometimes cleared from the canals by CRT, but as the water is unusually shallow this year, we are noticing the debris more. Another great vlog Youngsters growing up in the right direction good to see.i wonder how the rubbish gets into the canal who puts it there ? A solo boater would of had a hard time getting through. Hi Edmund, I was so impressed with the youngsters and their immediate rush to help us. It is sad when rubbish gets thrown in the canals, but there is a real shift to protect the water in that area which is what the local warden was doing a great job working on. Solo boaters would have struggled through that stretch, but CRT were doing regular checks of it and hopefully help the solo boaters through it. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. If I had a narrowboat, I’d be tempted to erect shade cloth suspended on a light frame about 200mm above the roof in the summer, I’m sure it would lower the inside cabin temperature. Anyway just an idea, as many narrowboat folks have mentioned the heat in their boats.

Good evening Vanessa what a great episode this week so full of beauty and excitement of the cut, so many very helpfull people u meet on the canal side ready to help in times of need. I know the narrowboat holds its heat in summer but what kind of temperature🎚🤒 do u have to endure inside ? At least Zephyr had the right idea to keep cool by having a swim😀. The temperature inside the boat the other day was 30 degrees and seems to be hotter inside during the evening than outside, so it retains the heat of the day. We will be mooring under the trees this weekend and possibly have to move outside somewhere cool on Monday and Tuesday. A church is always a good place to sit when the outside heat gets too much. I didn't know that there are oyster catchers in England. Our New Zealand ones are all black, of course.

I just love your videos with the history of the places you visit and your blogs and your art work cheer me up and with your dog having a roll in the grass do you do the Leeds and Liverpool canal its nice on there and there is a tunnel called the Mile tunnel I been through on a boat back in the old days it must have been hard work to lie on your back to walk the tunnel to get to the other side and there is a pub on the canal side and get a beer and chill

A solar air conditioner is a super idea. We bought a USB fan the other day for the first time as we haven't needed to use one before now. I am glad you enjoyed the vlog, John. The only downfall to boating. Is when you moor up and in the morning the pound has drained because others do not respect others. By leaving paddles up.

Brilliant video. I'm a bit concerned about what is going to happen to the oyster cachers when the canal and rivers trust begin their plans to reopen the tunnel.
Hi Raven, thank you so much for your lovely comment. I was concerned too, but I have heard recently that the plan would be to bypass the tunnel as it is too dangerous and expensive to knock through. Watching this video and seeing your problems with the rubble in the water under the bridge, I was wondering how often the water gets cleaned out to keep you from getting damage to the boat
That is a very good question and I don't know how often it gets cleaned out but now that we are going to be subjected to more drought each year, I think keeping the bottom of the canal, debris-free should be a routine spring job perhaps? Thank you so much for watching, take care🌻🦋

Imagine the temperature change if more trees were planted in cities where it gets hot. Is Summer evaporating the water in the pounds as there are a few canals that seem to be low in water? Narrowboating isn't for the faint hearted is it? Take care and keep the sunblock on. =-)
