I totally agree. Great comparison. I have the Cloud defensive LCS Streamlight protac combo. I’m pleased with it. However, when I first ordered it through Optics Planet, I received a counterfeit. Looked nearly identical. Somehow the counterfeits are slipping in the market everywhere. OP was very helpful, and sent me out the real McCoy.

I was seconds away from buying the Protac 2.0 and you're the second person to review it with the same candela complaint. I never really understood the lumen vs candela thing, so thank you for the info. Both reviews came to the same point. The HLX is a better option even though it's 1000 lumens less 👍.
Good comparison video. Always love the comparison among products from the same company. I was about to get a Pro Tac 2.0 but now you make me to reconsider that. However, I don't seem to agree with you on switching to Scout Lights since they at least will double or even triple the price of a Pro Tac 2.0, that's totally out of my considerable price range. But except that, love your video
Appreciate it. Honestly though, you’d be surprised what you can get for 200 beans. Especially on Reddit GAFS or some of these bST groups on FB. Or even builds with arisaka/SF parts
Ty I am lucky enough to buy it in Dec 2023 and it'll be the new pro with 55k candela Your comments about the 2.0 lack of throw is what I wanted to confirm, ty man
I'm a real fan of streamlights. But I tend to agree with your assessment to the most part. I bought the 2.0 for head lamp, but for a carry light or a weapon light I would choose the HL-X. I did buy the HL-X for a carry light and I love the trl-1 HL for a pistol weapon light. For a home defense/general light I bought the HL5-X flash light. So basically I prefer a good hot spot light with lots of candela unless I'm working close up. The 2.0 head lamp works awesome on low for my indoor needs and on high it's great for navigation. But I disagree about the strobe feature, simply because I'm ready for it and the bad guy isn't. But that's only for close up too in my opinion. Like in your house would be my only use for it, and only if I can surprise them with it. Otherwise I prefer just the bright blinding light. I didn't buy the weapon mounted light for rifles, only because I don't have any defensive rifles, though I wish I could afford a dependable AR. Anyway great video and I think your opinion is spot on. 😎👍
I think of lumens as the total output and Candela as the hot spot in the center, or the throw. So a higher lumen with a lower candela means it is more of a flood than a beam, which is what your pictures show if I am not mistaken.
I have too much investment in CR123s and 18650 batteries to go with a proprietary battery. The dual button/wire cap is the only thing that's an upgrade.
Couldn’t agree with you more on this & will be sticking with the HL-X. Soon as I heard about the 2.0 release I went to check the specs on the streamlight website & the 1st thing I checked was the candelas; & then immediately said “wtf!?”. Then, saw it was an overall larger unit than the HL-X, that it takes a specialized battery that is not compatible with the industry standard 18650, & to top it off is only still only mounts to 1913 pic rail. If streamlight had made this unit at least the same size as the HL-X (smaller & lighter would have been preferable though), the ability to utilize the same tailcap (that already has good aftermarket support), have at least the same candelas as if not more than the HL-X, run on the 18650 battery, given it the ability to mount directly to mlok, & only given us even just a couple hundred more lumens I would have been sold on it; as that would have been a 2.0 to the protac line-up. If they put out a light like I described I would have upgraded all of my HL-X lights to it but, no way will I be buying any of these. I honestly don’t know what streamlight was thinking with this light but, it just seems like a desperate money grab & seems like a product I would have expected from inforce or olight not streamlight.
It’s not _“a desperate money grab”,_ it’s basic economics. The Protac 2.0 with the SL-B50 offers more capacity and more lumens. If you want more, you’ve got to pay for more. If you don’t want to pay for it, don’t buy one. But don’t play the victim because you’re too cheap to pay for it.
@kevinjohnson1139 1st lumens mean nothing without candela. Candela is what allows your light to penetrate thru photonic barriers. You can have an insane amount of lumens but if there is no candela to back it up you have a very bright short distance light & on a rifle short distances lights are worthless & on any weapon system a light that cannot penetrate a photonic barrier is worthless. 2nd the new proprietary battery does not provide any significant runtime capacity. 3rd I’m not to cheap to upgrade my numerous HL-X lights it’s that this “2.0” is not an upgrade I honestly find it to be a downgrade to the HL-X with its reduction in candela. 4th back to the new proprietary battery. Switching to it means no longer having the ability to cross platform batteries with my handheld lights. Which means having to carry multiple different battery types on me & having to spend additional effort/resources/time making sure I have backup batteries charged is not worth a possible marginal additional amount of runtime. Additionally when you have a large number of various types of uniformed personnel using your products streamlining the usage of your products makes sense. Adding in a whole new battery that isn’t really a significant upgrade over what is an industry standard is stupid. 5th make sure you know what al you’re talking about before you try to start slinging some shade.
Btw, strobe can be effective against animals...especially sick ones. And if you practice with strobe it can be effective without blinding you. It's always a nice extra option to have...I want every option I can get in a bad situation. 😅 if I can strobe someone instead of shooting them I always will. Remember, you also have to survive the next day in court 😅
@Kennedyworks I've never seen that happen with recoil. I'll have to keep an eye out. I have nitecore on my AR but the strobe button is on the side. This is the first I'm hearing about "recoil strobe"
I have a 2.0 it's cool. But for the price my nitecore performance is on another lever. Nitecore also makes a LEP laser spotlight with a 1650 yard throw..and 6 Cree LED for splash light around the spotlight. This is what I run on my DD MK18, and it's never coming off my gun 😅
Excellent comparison. No bs. Damn good thing as I was about to buy the 2.0 before wondering if it was worth it and found your vid. Its time to ditch my olight mini odin. The streamlight 2.0 would have been a definite upgrade but you talked me back into the gen 1. And it honestly seems the superior of the 2. Question though. How has the streamlight tape switch treated you? I've heard some negative things about it. At some point I may swap it for a surefire with the arisaka tail cap depending on how well the factory streamlight works. The odin switch has worked flawlessly so I want the same reliability. Thanks for any advice in advance. I've only been in the AR game for a year 🇺🇲 always learning
The switch works well. My only gripe is size. I’d prefer a modbutton/ arisaka setup. I’ve heard the switch wire has a tendency to come loose but haven’t had that happen to any of mine. So I can’t verify that claim. But overall it does it’s job.
Really the difference is in the concentration of the beam, HLX has longer light throw, but 2.0 is way brighter in closer distances. Meaning...I will take 2.0 over HLX in my home defense scenario. Now...if you are protecting your ranch, then you will like HLX too, but...still won't have that peripheral range of 2.0. 2.0 is arguably way better, because it has wider cone of view. Imagine if a dude was around that building? You wouldn't see him with HLX I returned HLX because it wasn't as bright as my TLR-1 HL
You must have gotten gunsngear daily deals and ordered from primary arms... I sent him an email about the lack of switch in the light advertised but who knows if he got it.
