- I've been catching up on stuff post-traveling, so let's do a simple, happy, theoretically quick project while also accomplishing a bunch of side quests!

Bird of paradise name suggestion: Kevin. Like the bird from Up
I second this.
I concur. Kevin!
Oh my gosh YES! Kevin!!!
Actually, this is way better than my suggestion!
Okay, yes, absolutely, it is Kevin for sure
a) Oh my god a little lime wedge purse would be incredibly cute. Goodbye weekend plans, I need a citrus purse stat. b) Calling those little jobs side quests has changed my entire view of them. This is genius.
absolutely!! a half slice would be sooo cute and the segments can be pockets!
@@neocat81 I did not even think of the applique segments as pockets. Incredible.
Yeah, I moved the dryer back to its place next to the washing machine. Had to clean out the space. Move a lot of large photo frames and miscelaneous empty storage bins and boxes. Had been procrastinating that for 6 months...
@@letitiarademakers6304 it's amazing that when we procrastinate over something we find those other projects we procrastinated on being suddenly done...chuckle...
alternate idea: cake with a few slices missing & a matching coin purse in the shape of a single slice
Those among us who *do* have weird brains completely understand why you waited three months to open your lamp. I would totally do that. I’m glad it wasn’t broken - both it and your pillows are super cute!
My daughter joined me watching this while I was feeding baby brother his bottle and has decided she wants her own set of lemon pillows for her birthday and a set of watermelon ones for her sister. Looks like I’ll be taking a few side quests!
Oooooh, I love the watermelon idea!
Me too ❤😃👏@@bunhelsingslegacy3549
Yes omg
Elmers purple disappearing glue sticks to hold the applique pieces in place is a game changer. Everything stays put when you sew, and it washes out.
i used this for basting for english paper piecing.
@@vivienrubio8129 I'm about to use a variation on paper piecing for a few projects, never done it before (hadn't heard of it before Shannon's video lol). Did you use the glue just on where the fabric overlapped, or use it against the actual paper? I imagine it would peel away easily later still but idk (I may be making plastic shapes instead of paper for my thing anyway)
Where the fabric overlaps@@ItsAsparageese
Chelsea-She Sews Seams had some great videos recently on how to EPP quickly
@@cathyfromcanada637 Sweet, thanks for the tip!
Ok, that’s it…retiring the “To Do when I have a little time” list. Side Quests from now on. More mentally friendly to “make time” for a Side Quest and each item on the list becomes an individual thing with a reward. Brilliant!
Yup, gonna do the same!
Yeah, I hope Charlie makes side quests a fairly regular feature. Inspirational. I will be adding side quests to my life. 💕
When working with foam you should actually be pretty conservative with seam allowences.
We were told in upholstery school to add maybe half a centimeter around the edges, and then sew it way wider, to make sure the pillow stays snug and the cover doesn’t look loose around it.
Foam is soft and it gives in easily, so no need to give it more room.
Edit: the side pieces should be straight grain. You’re not trying to curve the fabric against it’s physics. The grainlines run perfectly straight, just on top of a circular form. No need to cut it on the bias. The bias grain will actually make it harder to get an accurate fit.
Instead what would be helpful is measuring accurately, and marking midway and quarter way points around the circle and around the side piece to make sure the pieces match up. Makes sewing so much easier.
My new hobby is watching Charlie finish side quests while simultaneously ignoring the glares from my WIP pile. 😂
The best thing about the internet is following creators who are just as chaotic as you. I am not alone! Congratulations on those side quests! I’m going to make all those appts I need as my sewing side project today.
The pillows are adorable and I love the hot air balloons. You could do a watermelon slice with the pink 😊
this would be sooo fun!! change it up a bit and it could be round or oval!
yes watermelon ! those pillows are so cute….how about on your deck?
my side quest…i moved and transplanted plants, i bought a new hummingbird feeder…and then figured out how to fix the broken handle one….so now i have two feeders…which is good because i have two hummers coming to the yard and they fight over the food.
I love to dink around and do side quests…only i usually know i’ve done something, but doesn’t matter, i know and it’s such a good feeling. i have short term and long term lists of side quedts…love doing them….but maybe it’s because i am an event planner…which requires the completion of many side quests.
Even as a young kid i made to do lists, dopamine hit when completing and crossing off the task !
the actual first side quest….😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
With lil black seams! It would be so cute!
Can I say, that I think the side quests was an amazing story teller trick by you? The video was so fun to watch. It gave a little variety, and my short attention span brain loved it.
Agreed! And it was all wholesomely relatable. I doubt it would work in every video (and doubt she'd want to do it every time) but I hope this format/motif appears again!
Charlie literally Body doubled the internet… or well at least her subscribers and anyone TH-cam thinks would want to watch this. Loved it. Thank you for the motivation to take care of those pesky tiny tasks
Just framing it as a side quest sounds like more fun than working on my to-do list.
We use the heritage craft list at our museum in Yorkshire! We have clog making, spinning, weaving, corn plaiting and various types of lace making. Its always fun to learn somethings new.
That's so cool!
@@gettheetothestitchery it means we get free training as well. Hopefully learning more corn favours and dolls this year. I only know how to make the lovers favour so I really want to make the dolls. They look so creepy I kind of love it.
Is that Jorvik Viking Centre? I will have to visit!
@@songindarknessit's a tiny museum called the Colne valley museum. We are in weavers cottages, have looms, a clog shop and even run victorian days for schools and homeschooling children. Jorvik is super cool though. Well worth a visit there and the castle museum. The art gallery in York also have a monet exhibition until September.
My mother-in-law got an 10” umbrella plant shortly after we were married in 1978. When she died in 2008, it touched the ceiling. It was a beautiful plant.
I side quest semi-regularly when little chores build up. I call them "chore and chapter" days, and will alternate reading a book chapter or doing a bit of a project with completing a task. It seriously works and helps get stuff done.
Here’s the tips you were expecting. I done hundreds if not more machine appliqué. You will be so much happier if you use a stabilizer on the back. It keeps the tunneling from happening and helps with smoother turning. It can be a purchased one or just notebook paper. You can do a satin stitch, zig-zag, straight or my favorite the blanket stitch. Using a fusible prevents ruffled, frayed edges. You could have just fused some seed shapes on and just straight stitch through the middle, buttons, lazy daisy stitch or one of those stitches you never use on your machine. Your pillows turned out really cute.
Love how Matt came in your room to annoy you like a bored big brother 😂
Schrodinger's box ... Relatable lol.... if you don't open it... it may be broken, may not, You won't know! ... Glad it was fine!! ♥
Pillows turned out adorable. ... and Yay for Side Quests!! ... I don't think I could ever get a "main quest" done if not for the small hits of "yay i did it!" from the side quests being done too. It helps a lot.
Have a great one yall ♥
Once again the CCs were amazing. Also, grapefruits are my fave so you should totally make one of those to add to the family! Definitely look for the fabric! I was also thinking some oversized tringle wedges like some oversized versions of the inner ones would be cute to go with them!
She select lime, orange, pink and yellow fabric. Then she goes to the table and my eyes go directly into the yellow, orange and pink vase! What a beauty!
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that! It was so satisfying to look at!
I actually found an orange slice pillow in a store and promptly snatched it up and it now sits on my renovated orange nurses stool, for my guest to sit on while they tie there shoes in the hallway. I live in Sweden, we take our shoes off. And I am so happy about that pilot!!
Those would make the best cushions for some little bistro chairs.
The slices match the vase on your table and all of the multicoloured books on the shelves, too. The pink could be a watermelon slice and would also match the vase!
Oh my. I've just had a vision of a comfy chair styled to look like a coconut
because
like
because then
you could put the lime in the coconut XD
I’m off to sew on a button, mend a pair of shorts, and change the hvac filter. 😁👍🏼😁
You can do it!
@@gettheetothestitchery I did all those things, and now I’m kicking back! 👍🏼
Please oh please oh please! Do a video on the list of extinct crafts! That sounds fascinating. Also!!! Please do more travel blogs when you travel! It was so great, aesthetically pleasing, relaxing, and a pure joy for us that can’t travel to all the places we wish to go yet. ❤
While watching, I got inspired to finally repot a couple plants of my own I've been putting off. They're much happier now! Love the pillows ❤️
Applause!!
I am going to finish cleaning my sewing room so I can use it again! Thanks for the inspiration.
Edit: I think the most important thing I learned from this video is to make a list of all those little things that need doing. Lol. Maybe that baby quilt that’s pinned and ready to quilt should be high on the list. I finished two and got distracted. Only six more to go.
Those citrus pillows look so familiar. I must look through my old sewing books. I think the pattern is in one.
Cute pillows and you did a great job on them. You reminded me that I was making new pillow covers for the daybed in my sewing room. Out of denim this time. Stopped after making two. I think I need five.
@@olivemd As a neurodivergent nerd who thinks too much about these things, I learned a really interesting prioritization tip that (supposedly) gets taught to spies/secret agent types of people. Your note about the baby quilt made me think of it. The idea is that, when making decisions about what to do next, you always do whatever can be completed fastest. The example I heard had to do with a dangerous situation and started with securing yourself then others etc, but it's really helped me with everyday decision paralysis, especially when I have many projects going at once with many steps each lol! So yeah, thanks for causing me to recall this and I hope it helps someone out there XD
I’m in love with them! They remind me of a coaster set from unpacking (that i really really really want) and I’m obsessed. Citrus garlands are in my future, I believe
They are so cute! You could do a watermelon with the pink inside and green outside - and of course black seeds. By the way - I can really relate to many things you describe you struggle with and I appreciate you talking about it in such a humerous way. It takes the heavyness away when questioning yourself too much… ❤
Aggressive bobbin thread loading is a mood 🤣 Love these sooo much. Now on the to-make list!
These are so 1970s. That being said, I may have seen something like them on a magazine cover, but never in real life.
THEY'RE FANTASTIC!!!!!!
1-the pillows are SO CUTE! And they go perfectly with the vase on your table, so I think you've got a great start on room decor.
2-the hot air balloon is so awesome! And when you turned it on? *chef's kiss* AMAZING!! Now I need one too!
3-your closing line wins YT. 100% accurate!
I misheard you at 1st and thought your were making Citrus Spice pillows. I was imagining delicious smelling pillows.
The pillows are cute! As advice for the future, you could use HeatnBond (lite or featherlight to keep it from being too stiff) to attach the pieces to make it easier to applique, as well as help keep the edges from fraying with just a straight stitch on top! It's how I've done some complicated applique for costumes and it was much easier to just iron it all in place than sew haha
I also suggest adding a layer of batting around the foam to help fill in the fabric and add an extra layer of soft between you and the foam itself. :)
You beat me to it. Its what I used on my pictures.
Your unofficial 1st side quest was the best 😅😂. Coffee will always do that to a person!
The drawing on to get every number of segments you need- I laughed so hard because I did the same thing when I made a hexagon quilt and needed to get the most amount of circles I could out of the fabric! We shall best the inanimate objects!
Basting spray is my best friend for circles and keeping things in place to sew :)
I love ur plant names. Lol
They are so cute!!! Great job! And I’m totally using “side quest” as a term now lol
Edit: the grapefruit could be pink grapefruit or lemon colored grapefruit centers.
Congratulations on finishing lots of little things.
Yes. After trips it takes forever to get back in the swing of things.
Citrus pillows were hot in 70s.
They would look great on outside furniture, like on a sitting porch or 4-season room or a patio on lounger chairs.
The way this activated my brain and made me want to make fruit slice pillows. Dragon fruit and grapefruit!??? 👀👀👀 I did need to learn how to sew, and also by extension make some pillow cases for one of those long pillows.
Ooooo a dragon fruit pillow would be incredible!
the long reading pillow chore is an absolute MOOD. i have a sitting pillow that i live on and i've been putting off a cover for it for soooo long
Those look like kitchen/dining room seat cushions. So cute!
I feel you!!! The not opening the carton part, the sidequests and the i need to sew this even if i starve to death!! It's so nice not to be alone 😂
Oh my dog, you start with those puppy dog eyes! And I laughed out loud at “the *actual* side quest” at the end. The pillows look great! So cute!
Bird of paradise name suggestion: Bert, so it can be “Bert of paradise”
Standard seam allowance for upholstery is 1/2 inch so you're right on the money there. When you're sewing the side onto a cushion like that, you can snip the seam allowance as you go to make it easier to go around the curves, and if you leave the ends loose and start and stop sewing the side to the face a few inches away, you can sew the two ends together with the perfect chef-kiss length, and then finish the seam between the side and face. It also really, really helps to mark balance notches on the face pieces, and then transfer those marks to both edges of the side piece as you sew the first face, so that the cushion doesn't end up twisted (which isn't a big deal on a circle, but is very helpful for other shapes) when you sew on the second face.
Chaos at the Stitchery? Count me in!
ty for putting the link to the heritage craft list in the bio bc i, too, wish to learn about and adopt dying crafts (despite really not having the time and resources too lol)
Charlie, YOU give me so much joy!!!!! Honestly. I love every one of your videos, your silliness is so special and important and down right fun and most important, it plucks at my heart strings and reminds me I’m not the only goof-a-saurus in this overly serious world !! Please never change!
Your videos bring me so much joy. Thank you 😊
Actually, your videos are my sidequest. Moving in 6 weeks over 2300km. Loads of sorting, lifting, planning, and plotting. Learning from you winging it while getting a tiny bit of West Side Story is awesome for a sidequest.
OH! And! The red list of crafts is absoloooootely going to be my next rabbit hole. 🤯
Thanks for the pep talk & motivational speech. It was needed!
Another fun video! Thanks for sharing the super cute cushions. They look like they would be super cute on garden furniture too.
Oh and if you ever decide to invest in a different sewing machine, I’m going to throw “knee lift” as one of the options you should totally look at having. I’m a quilter and I personally do a lot of Foundation Paper Piecing and it’s been a game changer for me. It really would have been your friend during this project that’s for sure. Anyhoo!! Thanks again for letting us into your creative journey and we’ll see you in the next one! Katt x.
p.s - Really pleased you got to experience the tree tunnels in Kent whilst you visited England. Oh and that you had time for the maze at Leeds Castle. 😸👍🏼
LOVE the pillows! The seeds are the frosting on the cake!
I appreciate Side quests. I have been putting off going through my yarn to pick out a new project, cuz it involved cleaning off the bed of... stuff (guest bed). So while not for this video I did use some of the ideas you used and put away my sewing machine, cleaned my table, cleaned the bed, picked project, wound yarn and started on project.
As soon as you pulled out that pink and white fabrics I immediately thought..."Dragonfruit!!" Also, for the Bird of Paradise name: Polly
Next to nothing beats the feeling if completing those small sidequests! Also think a dragonfruit would be delightful for the pink fabric ❤
I love that you are doing side quests. I've just started kind of doing that, too. I watch way too much TH-cam so I have a long list of things that won't take very much time to do like doing the dishes, taking out the garbage, mending, etc. When I've done 2 things on my list I allow myself to watch another video. I get a LOT more done!
Really enjoyed this one :) I love that you show your whole process, trial and error included, and seeing you get little jobs done was weirdly satisfying!
i have weird brain too, returning things has to be a certain $ amount…otherwise not worth it….and i’m also an introvert…completely understand the recovery needed from traveling.
i’ve had a week off work, daily doing side quests, decluttering and organizing….your video are always delightful breaks!
i’ve run out of bobbin thread after sewing a good distance….it’s irritating and funny !
You could embroider the seeds next time. Sooo cute 🥰
I love your pillows!
Hu thanks for the heads up on the red list. Weirdly some of these I was taught in school. Coiled straw basket making and frame knitting.
Me dad's working on repair one of the museum frame knitting exhibits for the Leicestershire knitwear museum. Might have to poke him to giving classes on it to the kids.
Ya know what would be fun and I've never seen? A kiwi pillow❤ fun project
The pillows are fantastic, but that hot air balloon is adorable!
I did some mending while watching this. I honestly prefer the applique stitch, but I'm also a huge fan of traditional quilting. I love the way you did the pillows and, more importantly, you love them. Also, I think the piece that will make your life a million times easier for another applique project is spray basting! It's a spray adhesive to keep your fabric pieces in place while you sew them on and would have really helped with your puckering issues.❤
The plant-watering-condundrum is easier with a moisture meter. It's a metal probe you stick in the soil, it has a little meter on top that says "dry - moist - wet" and then you notice very quickly which plants need more water and which ones are slowly drowning. Bonus: you also notice when a pot is full of roots instead of soil and you need to repot.
I don't sew, but youtube knows I love travel vlogs, especially when it's the UK. I vote for more travel vlogs. I did watch this entire sewing one because of your awesome personality and was not disappointed.
I am so happy to hear that somebody else is competitive with inanimate objects. I feel that they’re out to get me, and when I win it makes me feel great.
Enjoyed your video!!
so many side quests. Going to get one thing done for sure.
Thank you so much for sharing that endangered crafts list! I think we (you) should accept these quests 😅💖 or at least some of the can be archived at home without expert supervision or expert utensils. Would be really interesting
You could use the bright pink for a pomegranate! 🤩 Loved this project, with all the great side quests, it showed us how to be productive without us wanting to tear our hair out. Thanks, Charlie ❤
I am doing side quests! Im styling a wig so as each layer of hair Im working on cools or dries, I do a side quest! Thank you for the motivation!
That's the perfect side quest project!
The slice pillows are super cute! I mediately thought they would be the very best pillows for putting on lounge chairs next to your pool. Likewise a grapefruit slice purse would make an excellent pool bag. My mind had you sunning by the pool head resting on a lime slice, citrus cocktail/mock-tail in hand (with fruit wedge and paper umbrella at the rim) grapefruit bag full of magazines/books, sunscreen, miniature mobile fan etc... perhaps with a beach towel decorated with lemons underneath you. Seemed like a very cute poolside theme to me.
Love the pillows. They are so cute.
I really enjoyed your side quests. There’s always side quests in my life so I’m glad to see I’m not the only one!
I am the SAME with returning things. Just can't and probably never will do it.
Also omg the light the air balloon lanturn gives off is SO PRETTY!
This video has such a happy vibe! The side quests are a blast, that's usually how a normal crafting-day goes around here too. Except there will be less crafting done, because of all the side quests... Balance is so hard! Pillows look so adorable, and the ballon is amazing. Great job getting it all done!
I like the fact that your vase matches what you're making. having something that is similar to what you're making in color or shape could be a great easter egg in your videos.
Omg I LOVE the hot air balloon lamp ❤❤❤❤❤ And it goes so well with your ceiling, incredible :D So glad it was still all in one piece :)
I have to say a BIG thank you for all your videos, I have been very stressed lately and your videos make me laugh and smile and want to sew and not take myself too seriously. You are an inspiration and a kindred spirit of sorts. Loved your vacation video and made me think of maybe trying to find a spinning course where I could travel to (I am into yarn spinning). you are amazing, thank you again.
I think it would read grapefruit if you did the pink for the slices and the lemon yellow on the outside
Those pips bring me joy. Always lovely to see Mr Puppy.
I laughed so hard at the bobbin thread running out after two stitches and you not noticing. Relatable!
That vase on your kitchen table is perfect for this.
Percival is my go to name for things
I did the thing today too! The pillows are adorable! Also, that balloon is so perfect for your whimsical sewing room.
OMG I love the Balloon light! The Pillows are so fun! Use them on your patio! Spray them with fabric waterproofing…..They’d look so cute by the pool!
Checking in from 22:58 - Gonna need a chatty video about the red-list crafts because I share a similar impulse to immediately take up any/all of those crafts for REASONS.
The hot air balloon side quest was INCREDIBLY relatable 😂 I have emails that sound like broken glass but are probably perfectly fine
Oh, goddess bless!! New goals unlocked!!!! (Heritage Red List) Some of these on the list are important to my kid's Scottish Highland Dancing, (as well as ballet - aka, expensive Pointe shoes...) so I think I know what my next mission in life is... Important, too, because I've been more than a little lost since my military retirement...
If you do it, make videos! This is the kind of stuff I love, but know I will never do. Watching other people do it scratches that itch
I love making things ‘just for the fun, just because I can, just for me’ and that gives you joy. If I loose my sew-Jo, I often do a few quick n dirty projects, the ones that are quick to complete, very satisfying and often lead to new things learned 👍🇬🇧
The ending 😂😂😂 This is the BEST channel on YT ❤
Right?!?! Those who didn't stay until the end missed it :)
Love the side quests! Unfortunately I am moving this weekend...so everything is a side quest because.... brain. The wonderful part is this is the first house I have ever owned 🎉🎉
I bought fabric, with no real plan, to make a toadstool pillow. I bet I could use one of those circular foams, cut it in half, and make two mushrooms!
That would be amazing!
My husband surprised me when I got home from work with a storage shelf in our room that we had talked about for 6 years!😂 I was so delighted, I've specifically gone to stare at it multiple times because it makes me happy😂❤😊😊
If you ever decide to try the narrow zig zag stitch for the appliques, you will want to stabilize the fabric before stitching to avoid puckering and other issues. Also, consider doing the "blanket stitch" if your machine has that ability. It's a bit of cross between the straight stitch and a stitch that "bites" in to the fabric.
I so enjoy you whatever your videos are about! Thank you for giving me permission to not have to do everything perfect the first time and to not get so frustrated ripping out stuff is just part of the process!
You've also made me more daring to cut and sew off pattern, or going rogue as I like to call it.
Also calling things that you've been putting off side quests gives my neurodivergent mind permission to go off and do something else in the middle of a project as I tend to do. And calling it that just makes it feel so much more legitimate and special.
I'm so happy I found you and your channel you are delightful and when I see you've posted a new video I literally say out loud, yea!
Thank you for being you! ❤
Oh and the citrus pillows are adorable!
Those are so fricken' adorable! The polka dot fabric was genius!!!
