Good old Steve...we remember when he used to work at Winchell's Donuts. Ha ha ha! He used to say when the Sunshine Company came out with their recording that he could buy all the guitar picks he wanted. We first saw him at the Prison of Socrates. Norm Jensen opened for him that night. This was back in 1968 in Balboa, CA. And then there was that great night at The Whole in Glendale, CA...and many many nights at the Glendale Ice House and later at The Pasadena Ice House.
That is Steve Gillette, himself, singing the harmony vocal accompanying Linda Ronstadt while playing guitar on the Stone Poneys version It was recorded during the time that the record execs decided that Linda was going to be bigger than the group and were bringing other musicians to play and/or sing in place of Bobby Kimmel and Kenny Edwards
Did not know this was one of Steve's songs as I'd only heard (and loved) it by the Sunshine Company. This is a very good version too. Never seen Steve nor do I (yet) own any of his music, but here him from time to time on folk shows.
In the Philadelphia area, Steve Gillette's recording was popular on WMMR-FM and other stations. I don't remember hearing the Sunshine Company recording played on the radio in that area. I love the Sunshine Company recording, but this one still gives me chills. I believe that Steve says that the Sunshine Company recorded their version after hearing him perform it once. I got to hear Steve Gillette perform at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr.
